James Tillet Porter, shown in his Confederate uniform at age 19, was
born 21 Nov 1842 in Union County, South Carolina. He served in Co. C of the
12th Louisiana under the command of Captain John A. Dixon. He was captured
at Vicksburg and returned to the regiment in early 1865 in time to go to
North Carolina where he participated in the last battles of the war against
Sherman. He was detailed as a "musician" throughout the war according to the
Compiled Service Records from the National Archives. He was the great-great
grandfather of the submitter.
