Mr. HOPKINS was born in Estham (now Orleans) in 1753, and during the early part of his life he was employed in the whaling business on the coast of Greenland. At the commencement of the American Revolution, he enlisted as a soldier under Washington and joined the Army at Cambridge, and during the fall and winter of 1776 was stationed in the vicinity of Boston, watching the movements of the British, who then had possession of the town. On the 17th of March, General HOWE, with his Army evacuated the town, and Mr. HOPKINS was among the first to enter it; this was a circumstance upon which he never spoke without indignation at the contemptible meanness of the British soldiery. He used to say that "the place had the appearance of having been invaded by a host of unpriniipled robbers and he always declared HOWE to be a 'base coward," because he threatened to burn the town if the Americans attempted t! o force his reteat, which was done with great precipitancy, notwithstanding. In consequence of a swelling in the head, Mr. HOPKINS left the Army and returned to the Cape. About this time, the SOMERSET man-of-war, one of HOWE's squadron, was stranded upon the Bars off P'town. Mr. HOPKINS, though in a feeble state of health, assisted in escorting the marines through Barnstable County and for many years was the only survivor. He led a sober, temperate and industrious life, and for 88 years never knew the effects of intoxication in the smallest degree, for he was scrupulously temperate, both in eating and drinking; moral and exact in all his dealings with his fellow men, his life was extended to a period beyond which few will arrive........(The port-hinges of the SOMERSET are now performing the office of barn door hinges in Hawich) April 21, 1842 In Centerville, Mrs. Eliza, wife of Mr. Lot CASE, aged about 43 years.
