Jonathan BURR in the 86th year of his age. He ws born in Bridgewater, January 20, 1757; graduated at Harvard University 1784; settled in Sandwich April 18, 1787; dismissed, December 25, 1818. We seldom have to record the death of one whose departure will be noticed and lamented by a more numerous and extensive circle of acquaintence and friends. His character was of the stamp which we should naturally conceive would be found among the better class of society in the earlier and less corrupt and changeful days of our favored country. As a husband, a neighbor, a Christian, a friend to the poor, a comforter of the afflicted, his example is worthy to be remembered and imitated. His Christian integrity and trust in God, through a long course of years, and amidst various trials, will afford abundant matter for humble gratitude and chastened joy. As a preacher he was affectionate, solemn and impressive. Though he knew it would detract from his popularity, yet he avowed the sentiments which he believed and preached the truth without fear. He held a distinguished place among his contemporaries. His ministry was not without success - 335 he admitted to the church in Sandwich; 114 were received in the year 1808 as the fruits of a revival. He loved to see Christians alive and sinners turn to the Lord. He was happy in preaching those truths which the Spirit is wont to bless for the comfort and confirmation of the believers and the enlargement of Zion. And it was his delight to hear, and meditate upon those truths as the infirmities of old age were creeping upon him, and until the day of his death. He enjoyed the affection and confidence of his pupils; and yet no one could be long a member of his school without being convinced that it was not a slight offence to break any of his commands. For four years he pursued his course of teaching, without resorting in a single instance, to any corporal punishment. And his school, during this whole period was noted for its regularity and stict observance of order. A look of approbation from him was prized and had effect; a frown was a punishment so severe that it did not need to be often repeated. The "Sandwich Academy" came into being through his efforts and prayers and sacrifice of time and property. While he had the control of it, few institutions of the kind have flourished so well. We can truly say that no individual in the County has done half so much as he to promote the cause of education. It is from the founding of the Academy in Sandwich that we date the revivals of learning in the region. Many yet living, who were once his pupils, when they read his death, will look down from the various stations of honor and influence to which they have attained, and remember the Teacher to whom faithful instructions they are so greatly indebted and will shed the tear of sympathy and of gratitude when they call to mind the form of him whom they will never cease to venerate. His old age was tranquility and his end was peace. August 18, 1842 In South Dennis, 13th inst., Mrs. Susan, widow of the late Mr. Freeman BAKER, 64. He had resided in Barnstable about eight years, during which time he had acquired an extensive and successful practice in his profession.
