Thomas HOWES, aged 40, formerly for several years a shipmaster sailing from Boston, and more recently commander of the steamers PORTSMOUTH and INDEPENDENCE and of the British steamship NORTH AMERICA. As Capt. HOWES was extensively and favorably known, as well by the travelling, as by the mercantile and seafaring community, not only in Boston and the Eastern States, but also in some of our Southern cities and in the British Provinces, it has been thought that some facts connected with his character and history would be interesting to his numerous and widely scattered friends and acquaintances. As he was born in the place where he died, it is there known that from early childhood he was of a sober reflecting turn of mind and was more disposed to spend his leisure hours in reading, or in listening to the conversation of those older than himself, than in youthful sports and pastimes. This taste for reading followed him through life and as his mind was vigorous and active, and his memory accurate and retentive, few active business men of his age had read so much and to so much profit as he, and few educated men are as well informed as he was in those departments of history and of general literature which had come within the range of his reading. In February last, while coasting with some of his play fellows upon one of the hills in the vicinity, he was seized by one of his companions just as he had started upon a trip by the right arm and turned off his sled. The affair was considered of a trifling nature at the time of the accident and for five or six weeks he engaged in his usual avocations with but little inconvenience. At the end of that time however, the joint had considerably swollen and he sought surgical advice. Its appearance then was that of a simple inflammation of the joint and was so considered by his surgeons. It soon however, began to assume a malignant character and to involve the structure of the surrounding parts. No pains were spared to procure the best surgical advice, but all united in the opinion that no treatment could prove successful and he has been since gradually wearing out with a hectic consequent upon the irritation of the tumor, which at the time of his death measured 23" in circu! mference, while the opposite arm in the same position measured only 5".
