Rich Editor-in-Chief [BMR1] Mortuary Record from the Gravestones in the Old Burial Ground in Brewster, Massachusetts, with Biographical and Genealogical Notes. Compiled and Edited by Charles E. Mayo. Yarmouth, Mass. Register Publishing Company, 1898 Copyright, 1898 by the Author. On Saturday, June 15, 1895, at the annual meeting of the Brewster Pilgrim Club, an antiquarian society in Brewser, Mass., the subscrib- er, then on a visit to his native place, suggested the propriety of copying the inscriptions of the gravestones in the old burial ground. Thereupon, several ladies, members of the Club, volunteered their assistance, ad work was accomplished on Monday, June 17. The grounds, enclosed with an iron fence, were lined off in ten divisions, each of the width of three lengths of fence and numbered from one to ten. Number one comprising the southerly strip adjoining the church. Number ten, at the north end, was six lengths of fence in width on the west side of the enclosure. The work was commenced on the west side of the grounds. This description will enable one to locate any particular grave by observing the number of the division in which the inscription is recorded. The inscriptions have since been verified by a personal examination of each stone, ensuring accur- acy in the part of the work. The genealogical notes have been pre- pared with great care, and it is believed that few errors will be dis- covered. The town of Brewster, named in honor of Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower, was incorporated in 1803. Previous to that date, it was known as the north parish of the town of Harwich, incorporated in 1694. The church was gathered in 1700, and the first house of wors- ship was probably erected soon after; doubtless a small, plain, simple structure without pews. After having been once enlarged, it was, in 1724, removed to give place to a still larger house. This build- int, in 1796, proving too small for the soceity's needs, was enlarged by dividing it in the middle and adding several rows of pews In the following year a steeple was added. In 1834, having been pronounced "untenantable," it was demolished, and a new house erected on the same site, which still stands, presenting the same outward appearance, with the exception of the steeple, of a different design from the original which was seriously damaged in a violent gale of wind, necessitating its removal. The original founders of the church, in 1700, were Nathaniel Stone, Thomas Crosby, William Myrick, John Freeman, Thomas Freeman, Edward Bangs, Simon Crosby, and Joseph Paine. Stones marking the graves of each of the founders, excepting that of Jseeph Paine, May [BMR2] be seen in the old burial ground as indicated in the "record." Many of the interments have never been marked with stones, and as the unmarked graves were leveled some years since for strange and inexcusable reasons, all knowledge of them has passed into oblivion. In the early days several private family burial places were located in the western part of the town, and across the line in what is now Dennis, where the Sears, Winslow, Dillinghams, and Wings were buried and stones placed to make the graves. It is hoped that the labor bestowed on this work, which should interest all persons of Cape Cod birth or origin, will be appreciated and that the result will show that it has not been in vain.
