On the thirteenth day of November A.D. 1832 before the Judge of the Supreme Judicial Court for said County & State, in the open Court, personally appeared John Gelatt, resident & inhabitant of Fairhaven, formerly part of Dartmouth in said County aged seventy years Nov. 30th 1831, having been born, as he believes as, tho no record thereof, on 30 Nov 1761, in Freetown in said county who being sworn according to law, doth on oath make the following declaration, to obtain the bought of an act of Congress passed June 7, 1832; that he entered the service of the United States & received under the following named officers & served as here in after states That, in the fall of 1776, when scarcely 15 years old, then being a resident of said Dartmouth a town adjoining Teverton in the State of R. I. and he went to said Teverton & there enlisted into a company commanded by Captain Daval (or Devol) for three months, an older brother there being in said company served said three months, in said Tiverton near Howland's Ferry. That it he and of said three months, before going home, he enlisted into a company, then stationed there, commanded by Capt. Vaughan, the same being a company of artillery; served in said company 4 months, for which time he enlisted, being denied that Term state oned at & near said Ferry in Tiverton aforesaid. That at the end of said six months, in June or July, he again enlisted & served three months in a company under command of Captain Sloccum, one Sowle a Lieutenant at Fogland's Ferry, south of & before Howland's Ferry aforementioned - That he then enlisted & served two months at & near Fogland's Ferry, under Capt Thomas, belonging to State of R. Island during this term, in Sept or Octo. there were two attempts to go onto R. Island. General S Leman then commanding the American troops & being at Providence but not succeed - some troops went on from Howland's Ferry; but soon returned, as they were not supported. That after the above said service, he enlisted & served three months in 1778, in a company commanded by Capt. Hathaway, at near Providence in State of R. Island ---- That in 1778 in June or July (as he thinks) he served one month in Freetown in State of Massachusetts, & at Tiverton aforesaid, in State of R. Island, the adjoining town, near Fall river; so called; this being on occasion of an alarm, the British having come up the river from R. Island & burnt mills or there, which he says was a short time before Sullivans expedition on to R. Island in the summer of 1778. That afterward, to wit, in the spring of 1779, in June or May, is not certain which, he enlisted & served nine months in the continental army at Fishkill & white flasey, in a company commanded by Capt. Sofer & Col. Patterson's Regiment. That he was regularly discharged but has no written discharge _ thinks that one discharge was given to several included on one paper - but knows not what has become of it._ He further states, he has evidence in the war department at Washington, as he preserves, which was sent on then in 1818, to obtain a pension and as a law of Congress passed that year - & which was not returned to him & he received for ten months, & then it was discontinued, as he and too on account of this having a certain account of property. - That he thereby relinquishes every claim to a pension whatsoever except he present, & declares that his name is not come on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Cassidy And the said ? as ? declare this opinion, after an investigation of this matter, and after putting the ? ? by the War Department that the aforesaid applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he states. On this third day of October of 1884 personally appeared before Oliver Prescott Judge of Probate in and for the said County of Bristol Keziah Gelatt, a resident of Fairhaven in said County of Bristol. Aged Seventy two years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by the act of Congress passed July 7th A.D. 1838 entitled " An Act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows; and of the Act of Congress passed June 17th A.D. 1844 entitled "An act to continue the pensions of certain widows" that she is the widow of John Gelatt late of Fairhaven aforesaid deceased who was a Soldier, and served in the war of the Revolution; and was a pensioner of the United States for those services under the act of Congress of 1832; for proof of his said Services; she refers to the application of the said John Gelatt and the evidence therewith exhibited now on file in the pensions department. She further declares that she was married to the said John Gelatt on the Twenty sixth day of February in the year Seventeen hundred and Eighty nine; that her husband the aforesaid John Gelatt died on the Twelfth day of July, Eighteen hundred and forty three; that she was not married to him previous to his leaving the service; but that the marriage took place previous to the first day of January, Seventeen hundred and ninety four as at the time above stated.
