Wednesday, August 15, 1888 Page Two After a fight of over two months against the “grim monster,” General Phillip Sheridan died rather suddenly of heart failure at 10:30 p.m. last Sunday night at Nonquitt, Mass., whither he was carried some weeks ago from Washington. Essentially a solider, he acted toward the south from a conqueror’s standpoint and felt very little charity for our people, who he would have ruled with a rod of iron had he been the representative of a monarchy instead of a republic. But the great enemy has overcome him at last and we can afford to drop the mantle of charity over his grave.
