Byfield Parish Church Burying Grounds, Newbury, Essex, MA ************************************************************************ Copyright 2006 Thomas Hunter. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ Guide to Understanding and Using the Data Contained in "The Burying Grounds of Byfield Parish Church" During the spring and early summer of 2006 Thomas Hunter of Troop 15 Rowley MA undertook a two-phase Eagle Scout Service Project. Phase one of the project consisted of reclaiming, after several years of benign neglect, the 2.09 +/- acre "Burying Grounds" behind the old Byfield Parish Church (now a private residence) located on Elm and Jackman Streets in the towns of Byfield (Newbury) and Georgetown Massachusetts. On three Saturdays, and a scattered weeknight or two, the scouts and parents of Rowley Troop 15, volunteers from the Byfield Parish Youth Group, and a churchman or two cleared brush, vines, poison ivy, saplings and hay from the Burying Grounds. During the clean up, several fallen head stones were located, the ground was cleared around them and those stones that could be righted with out professional assistance were re-set in place. Over 150 volunteer hours were invested in this phase of the project. The second phase of the project involved developing a database identifying who was laid to rest in the Burying Grounds and where they were located. [The Burying Ground is an irregular plot of land with its high point being the old church with the land sloping downward in all directions and the low point being the southeast corner gate on Elm Street.] Rows of gravestones are generally laid out in a north to south direction; but few rows are truly straight. Complicating the task are the preponderance of footstones in various states of deterioration which don't always align neatly with the head stones and can easily be mistaken for small or sunken head stones. Given that the one constant appeared to be the direction of the rows, we decided to assign a row number to the first stone along the east west axis of the grounds, beginning with the first stone in the south east corner of the property nearest the Elm Street entrance gate. Entering the grounds at that point the visitor will find the headstone of Helen MacGregor Noyes. This stone is listed in the database as "Row 1 Stone 1." The second gravestone listed belongs to Richard Atherton Noyes. The database lists this stone as "Row 1 Stone 2." Likewise, the second row starts with Edward Parish Noyes, located at Row 2 Stone 1 and ends with Calvin G Chase and Philena A. Chase at Row 2 Stone 9. The same logic continues throughout the entire database. The data is also presented in alphabetical order by last name. This is useful for a quick reference to look up who is buried in the grounds, and also serves as a tool to help you navigate throughout the grounds to find a specific stone, without going back to the main gate and counting each row. For example, one of the most prominent stones on the grounds is the Moody Cross. Looking up Moody in the alphabetical database you will find that the cross is located at the head of Row 18. (The cross has no first names, so it appears as the last entry alphabetically under the name "Moody.") If you are looking for someone in Row 20, just go two rows west (toward the old church) and start following the stones northward until you find the stone are looking for. Data was gathered from two sources; volunteers taking a "census" of the gravestones and a list of gravestones compiled by Edna Jewett in 1989. Mrs. Jewett's list proved to be very useful it included several missing stones and copies of inscriptions that are no longer legible. (Mrs. Jewett's list also includes historical notes, and it appears that it may have been derived in part from previous lists of who is buried on site.) Both lists were crosschecked against each other for accuracy. In the end, we determined that Mrs. Jewett's list provided the most detail and we used her list as the source document for this new presentation, but only after double- checking each stone for accuracy and then assigning it a row and stone number. Note that when compiling her list, Mrs. Jewett started in the Northwest corner of the grounds and then continued in a "serpentine" fashion to the end of the cemetery. Some of her rows started on the south side of the property and ended on the north, and some started on the north and ended on the south. The rows were not always labeled and the headstones were not individually numbered. The list, while admirably accurate, was difficult to follow. The data was on typewritten pages; hence it could not be sorted by any of the data fields, like last names. Mrs. Jewett did take great care to record and type inscriptions exactly as they appeared on each gravestone, including indentations and formatting devices utilized to express the poetic flow of words. Under the column "Verse/Other" we have transcribed all the words (including dates of birth and death) as they appear on each stone, but without the formatting devices. This was done to preserve the sorting features of the database program we used and to present a more reader friendly format. A copy of Mrs. Jewett's list is included as an appendix to this report as a reference guide for those interested in her transcriptions. We were not able to locate all of the stones on Mrs. Jewett's list. When a stone was missing, we first tried to locate stones on either side of the missing stone, and then we would assign a sequential stone number to the missing stone. For example, we could not locate the stone of Lois Stickney (Row 30 Stone 7) who appeared on Mrs. Jewett's list between the stones of Sophia Stickney (Row 30 Stone 6) and Spofford Stickney (Row 30 Stone 8.) When we could not find any adjacent stones to a stone on Mrs. Jewett's list, we assigned that stone the same row number as other stones we found, and used 0 (zero) as a stone number. Rows 28 and 33 both have stones with the 0 designation. This represents our best guess as to where the stone may have been originally located. We have identified missing stones on our list by underlining the Row and Stone number. A map (plot plan) is included with this report to help orient you to the site. A second map (copy of the first) is numbered with locations of interest and a corresponding "key" complete with captioned pictures. (Note to on-line readers: Map and pictures are available for review in the Byfield Parish Church Library.)
