L. Glassock 1903 online; Google Book Thomas Crabbe appears on a Court Roll of the Manor of Picotts in Stortford in 1422, and in the subsidy rolls for Herts in 1545 under Stortford we find the names of John Crabbe and Thomas Crabbe. From the Feet of Fines for Hertfordshire for the years 1572 and 1591 I have extracted the following. "Mich. 15-16, Eliz. Final concord made at Westminster in the octaves of St. Michael 15th year of Queen Elizabeth. Between Thomas Crabbe pit*- and William Pilston and Joan his wife and Bichard Willye deforcts of one cottage one barn and two gardens with appurt8 in Stortford. (b) I have not seen the minutes of the Courts of this Manor after 1806, but since writing the above I have met one or two old inhabitants who remember the name of Crabb's Cross being associated with this spot. page 15 And aforesaid William and Joan and Richard have acknowledged the aforesaid tenements to be the right of him Thomas and have remised and quit-claimed the same to aforesaid Thomas and his heirs for ever. And for this acknowledgement &c. the said Thomas hath given to aforesaid William and Joan and Bichard forty pounds sterling." "Hil. 34 Ehz. (Mixed Counties.) Final concord made at Westminster on the morrow of the Purifica tion of Blessed Mary 34th year of Queen Elizabeth. Between Jeremy Gray pit1 and Nicholas Crabbe and Margaret his wife and Geoffrey Crabbe deforc*8 of one messuage one garden one orchard twenty- five acres of land three acres of meadow eight acres of pasture and two shillings and ninepence rent with appurt8 in ffarnham Welfield and Biefield (a) in the County of Essex. And of ten acres of land with appurt8 in Stortforde in the County of Hertford. And aforesaid Nicholas and Margaret and Geoffrey have acknowledged the aforesaid tenements to be the right of him Jeremy and have remised and quit claimed the same to said Jeremy and his heirs for ever. And for this acknowledgement the said Jeremy hath given to aforesaid Nicholas and Margaret and Geoffrey one hundred and twenty-one pounds sterling." [Feet of Fines for Hertfordshire, P.E.O.] The following items relating to members of the Crabbe family are selected from many that occur in the Church wardens accounts. 1520. pd to Crabbe for Irenwerke and naylis for the said bells 10* 1529. Thomas Crabb, Senr- There are many other entries of the name in the register, but those selected above may be considered sufficient for my present purpose. I suggest then that it was from some member of the Crabbe family that this cross derived its name, and if my surmise be correct, it would appear that it should be written " Crabbe's or Crabb's Cross," and not " Crab's Cross," as stated by Chauncy. ******************************************************************************* Researched and Compiled by Fran Chancellor Additional Comments: Thomas Emerson was the son of Robert Emerson who married Susanna Crabbe, 1578. This source discusses information, extracted by Fran Chancellor, regarding the CRABBE surname dating back to the early 1400s.
