Sam Kendall in New Salem, MA," in which he states that Jonathan was age 23 in 1774. 1774-23=1751, birthdate. Death: BEF 1796 per Jonathan(I) will, probably Hampshire Co, MA. His father [Jonathan's] will, which was written in 1796, names Jonathan III, but not Jonathan II, because Jonathan II was already deceased. Father: Jonathan oodale b: 19 APR 1724 in Marblehead, Essex Co, MA Mother: Elizabeth "Betsy" b: Marriage 1 Sarah McComb (Macomber) Married: 21 MAR 1771 in Warren, Worchester Co, MA, fom: "Vital Rcords of Warren (formerly Western), Massachusetts, to the end of the year 1849," pg. 108: "Goodale, Jonathan [of New Salem in int.] and Sarah McComb, march 21, 1771." Children John Goodale b: ABT 1772 in New Salem, Franklin Co, MA There exists some difference of opinion concerning who the parents of this generation are. This researcher believes RUTH and her brothers were the children of JONATHAN and BETSY GOODALE. I gently disagree with other relatives in my branch that have misidentified us as being descended from Ebenezer. I understand that professional genealogists in Boston did part of the work from printed records, for the most part. My three sources are strong. The strongest one is the headstone of the daughter of Ebenezer and Grace Phelps Goodale. She died in 1792, and her headstone states: "In memory of Mrs. Grace, consort of Mr. John Chamberlain and only child of Capt. Ebenezer and Mrs. Grace Goodale, who died Jan. 10, 1792 age 37" In other words, Ebenezer had no children other than Grace. This headstone reads as if her father commissioned it, but if the information on his own headstone is accurate, he also died in the same year. Unfortunately it may not be accurate, for I have been reading materials which seem to indicate that he was still living into the 1800s. This 1800s death date interpretation may be right or wrong, because the later material may instead be referring to the nephew Ebenezer [son of James, JONATHAN's brother] living in Danvers. Another difficulty is that the headstone for our New Salem Ebenezer Goodale is missing. It had still existed into the early 1900's when it received its designation as a Revolutionary War national monument, but has likely suffered from the past prejudices against Captain Goodale. Equally as supportive of my argument is the marriage date between Jonathan and Lydia, which follows the births of all of his children. My third source is David Kenneth Wetherbee, in his publication "eare Lyes Salim New Grant,"page 150. This source repeats the evidence for Grace as the only child of Ebenezer and Grace, and his primary source was the last will and testament of JONATHAN GOODALE, and the text of that will confirms that Ezekiel, Jonathan [II], James, Jacob Asa, RUTH, Deborah and Elizabeth were his children. [I now have a photocopy of the actual will.] Jonathan (II) Goodell in the Patriot Militia From: "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War," pg. 552: "Goodal, Jonathan, New Salem. Sergeant, Capt. Ebenezer Goodall's company of Minutemen, Col Woodbridge's regiment, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 51 days." From: "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War, Pg. 555: "Goodale, John. Private, Capt. Abel Dinsmore's company of Franklin County], Col. David Field's regiment; enlisted Aug. 17, 1777; discharged Aug. 19, 1777; service, 4 days; company marched to the Northward at the request of Gen. Horatio Gates and was dismissed by order of Gen. Lincoln." It is known that the Battle of Bennington, VT took place on Aug. 16, 1777 [see Heitman's "Historical Record..."] so that it appears from the above service record, that Jonathan's unit was mustered up in response to the Battle of Bennington. The following pension application of the soldier, Nathan Burpee, shows that his company marched through New Salem, probably on the day that Jonathan's company took up their march to Bennington. From: Nathan Burpee's Rev. War Pension File #W 27391: "That afterwards, in the year 1777, and as he believes in the month of August of that year and shortly after the battle at Bennington, he volunteered at the town of Sterling aforesaid to serve for three months...They were marched through New Salem directly to Bennington in Vermont. He recollects that the horses which had been killed at Bennington were in a state of offensive putridity when they marched over the battle field; that they were marched to different points in the advance of the British Army under Burgoyne, the particular place, his memory does not serve him to date." The following month, he was again called up to serve: From: "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War, pg. 556:"Goodale, Jonathan Private, Capt. Ebenezer Goodale's co., Col. David Wells regt.: enlisted Sept.24, 1777; discharged Oct.13, 1777, 120 miles from home; service, 26 days; company marched to join Northern army." In the Timothy Page Papers in the New Salem SRVHS collection, dated New Salem, October 20th, 1781, there is a requisition list (orders on the constable) and there is described 'Cloathing for Soldiers, etc', Jonathan Goodale, 1 pr stockings, and 1 blanket. New Salem, October 20th, 1781. Daniel Shaw and J. Chamberlin, Selectmen. N. B. The above is clothing for soldiers. December 5th, 1781, then paid N. Learned for one pair of stockings, 4.6. Due to Abram Pearce, 1.0.9 This indicates that Jonathan (II) performed more service in 1781, which did not show up on muster lists. The above list of men may even have constituted the company at that time. If he served with most of the Hampshire County men, he was probably stationed in the West Point area of NY. Most of Jonathan (II)'s service has been described in the section concerning the terms of service of his uncle, Captain Ebenezer Goodale [see notes under his uncle's biography] Jonathan, Jr died before his father, Jonathan (I), who died in 1813. If so, then his wife Sarah (McComb or Macomber) probably remarried. It is unlikely that we shall find the location of his gravesite..
