In June-July 2009, Shirlee Eddy visited the following towns and found no information about widow Ruth G. T. W.: Middlebury, VT [She checked Henry Sheldon Museum, the library, the courthouse, Moretown's library, and Moretown Commons Cemetery, Montpelier and Middlesex, all in VT, for vital records. Also, in NY: North Collins library, Morton's Corner Cemetery, went to Hamburg [but Hist. Soc. was closed]. However, circumstantial evidence lends strength to the argument that this was the same man as James Tyrer. The birth of the first child, Mary, fits the time frame following the marriage and during the period that he was hiding from the British army. Also, Ruth and James Tyrer's children were mentioned in the probate of James Goodell, Ruth's brother. That only happens with close relatives. "Mr. Elisha Washburn and Mrs. Ruth Tyrer of Wendell Nov. 25, 1799." Children Eliza West Washburn b: 7 JUN 1800 in Wendell, Hampshire Co, MA Proving the Parents of Ruth Goodell were Jonathan and Betsy, not Ebenezer and Grace, or Lydia with Jonathan: There exists some difference of opinion concerning who the parents of this generation are. This researcher believes RUTH and her brothers were the children of JONATHAN and BETSY GOODALE. I gently disagree with other relatives in my branch that have misidentified us as being descended from Ebenezer. I understand that professional genealogists in Boston did part of the work from printed records, for the most part. My three sources are strong. The strongest one is the headstone of the daughter of Ebenezer and Grace Phelps Goodale. She died in 1792, and her headstone states: "In memory of Mrs. Grace, consort of Mr. John Chamberlain and only child of Capt. Ebenezer and Mrs. Grace Goodale, who died Jan. 10, 1792 age 37" In other words, Ebenezer had no children other than Grace. This headstone reads as if her father commissioned it, but if the information on his own headstone is accurate, he also died in the same year. Unfortunately it may not be accurate, for I have been reading materials which seem to indicate that he was still living into the 1800s. This 1800s death date interpretation may be right or wrong, because the later material may instead be referring to the nephew Ebenezer [son of James, JONATHAN's brother] living in Danvers. Another difficulty is that the headstone for our New Salem Ebenezer Goodale is missing. It had still existed into the early 1900's when it received its designation as a Revolutionary War national monument, but has likely suffered from the past prejudices against Captain Goodale. Equally as supportive of my argument is the marriage date between Jonathan and Lydia, which FOLLOWS the BIRTH DATES of all of his children, so they cannot be Lydia's children. My third source is David Kenneth Wetherbee, in his publication "Heare Lyes Salim New Grant," page 150. This source repeats the evidence for Grace as the only child of Ebenezer and Grace, and his primary source was the last will and testament of JONATHAN GOODALE, and the text of that will confirms that Ezekiel, Jonathan [II], James, Jacob Asa, RUTH, Deborah and Elizabeth were his children. [I now have a photocopy of the actual will.] This researcher suspects, but cannot document, that in the years 1775-1779, during the Revolution, that Ruth Goodell contributed to the welfare of her brothers in the service of the Massachusetts militia by knitting her share of socks, spinning her share of thread, weaving her share of cloth, and cutting and sewing it into the needed articles of clothing. From" "The Town Records of Wendell," page 156: By 1796, at the March annual meeting, the widow RUTH TYRER was so destitute that the town "voted that two of the widow TYRER's children be put up 'at venue' [auctioned] to be kept or boarded for the term of six months at a certain sum per week. Extraordinary costs such as sickness for the town to discharge exclusively. and Rhoda was 'struck off' [auctioned off to the lowest bidder] to Abner Allen [the same man who purchased the real estate] at 1 shilling per week and Ruth (Jr) was struck off to Dille Whitcomb at 2 shillings per week." In November, the aid was extended, page 162: "also voted that Rhoda Tyrer and Ruth Tyrer be set up at vendue for their present support and were struck off to the lowest bidders, Namely Rhoda Tyrer to Silas Wilder at 1 [one] shilling per week & Ruth Tyrer at 2 [two] shillings per week." Although RUTH'S father, JONATHAN GOODALE did not die in 1796, it is fitting to enter his will into this place, for he wrote it with signing witnesses in 1796, and did not alter it by the time of his death in 1813. It is very curious in that he did not lift a finger to help his daughter RUTH financially, nor did his sons benefit from the terms of the will. The mystery of whether a quarrel arose between father and offspring may never be resolved, but the will does reveal JONATHAN'S reaction to his father [ISAAC (III)]'s last will and testament. [See the will in my notes for Jonathan Goodale, Ruth's father, in this family tree.] RUTH TYRER remarried in January 1800 to Elisha Washburn, a widower who had served under her uncle Ebenezer in the Revolution. From: the "Vital Records Book of the town of Wendell:" Wendell, November 25th, 1799: "This may certify that the intention of marriage between Mr. Elisha Washburn and Mrs. RUTH TYRER of Wendell hath been entered with me 14 days and published according to law, per me, Daniel Porter, Town Clerk." From: the "Vital Records Book of the town of Wendell:" From the 30th of April 1799 to the 30th of April 1800: "Mr. Elisha Washburn with Mrs. RUTH TYRER of Wendell." On April 13, 1800, about four months after Mr. Elisha Washburn married the widow RUTH TYRER, his son Rufus Washburn, married her eldest daughter, Mary Tyrer. From: the "Vital Records Book of the town of Wendell:" "Wendell, April 10th, 1800-This may certify that the intention of marriage between Rufus Washburn and Polly [a nickname for Mary] Tyrer of Wendell hath been entered with me for 14 days and published according to law. Per me, Daniel Porter, Town Clerk." RUTH had one child by Elisha, Eliza West Washburn. RUTH's marriage to Elisha Washburn was cut short, three years later, by his death. 1803, August-From: the "Records of the Congregational Church of Wendell, MA:" "Widow RUTH WASHBURN was received to full communion in the First Congregational Church." From: the "Town Records, of the Town of Wendell," on pages 224 and 225: "Be it remembered that on this twenty-fourth day of December, AD, 1803, [Elisha Washburn had died in June 1803] Joshua Green, Nathan Brewer and David Whitaker, Trustees of a lot of land, No. Twenty-seven, called and known by the name of Erving's Gift, lying in Wendell in the County of Hampshire, as described by the annexed lease to Elisha Washburn, dated the first day of April AD 1792, in consequence and by reason of the non payment of five years rent amounting to thirty six pounds one shilling and three pence equal to one hundred and twenty dollars and twenty one cents, which was due and unpaid on the first day of April last past, the same having been lawfully demanded, did enter into and upon, and did take and have, full, quiet and peaceable possession and seizing of the said Lot No. twenty seven, and every part thereof, and its appurtenances, by twig and turf. To have, hold, retain, and enjoy the same again to us and our successors as trustees, as in our first and former estate, according to the purpose, intent and meaning of this lease, and hereto let our hands the day and year first above written" etc. This indenture of lease made the 2nd day of January, 1804, between Joshua Green, Nathan Brewer and David Whitaker in the capacity of trustees of a lot of land, bequeathed to the Town of Wendell in the County of Hampshire and Commonwealth of Massachusetts by William Erving Esquire for the purpose of schooling on the one part, and RUTH WASHBURN, widow, and Rufus Washburn [her stepson], yeoman, both of said Wendell, (and James Goodale of New Salem in the County aforesaid, Gentleman, as surety for the said Washburns) of the other part; to summarize 120 acres, location described, free from all taxes, for the term of 987 [this is not a typing error!] years, paying rent yearly at the rate of thirty-two dollars and thirty-four cents in gold or silver. Widowed once again, this time RUTH TYRER and her stepson, Rufus Washburn were aided by her brother James Goodell. Notice that this person was not being called RUTH WASHBURN, but if this were the elder RUTH TYRER, why wasn't she being called RUTH JOHNSON? This person may have been her 19-year-old daughter, Ruth Tyrer, who was teaching school. There were several other women on the books, being paid to teach in 1810-11. Also teaching at the Whetstone Hill School was Ebenezer Johnson, who, in 1804, may have become RUTH, senior's third husband. He, or a like-named person, held some town offices over the years. On page 310 of the "Town Records for Wendell," on April 11, 1805, Rufus Washburn sold his rights [for 987 years] in the land to a Ruth Tyrer's future husband, Ebenezer Johnson for the sum of two hundred and sixty dollars. On the same page, dated April 21, 1813, Ebenezer and RUTH JOHNSON sold these rights to the land back to the Town of Wendell, for four hundred dollars. [It is not known for sure whether this Ruth Tyrer/Johnson was the mother or the daughter.] There are no further records of their presence in Wendell from this time onward. It has been reported by descendants that Ebenezer and RUTH moved to Moreton, VT, and there is a death registration for this Ebenezer Johnson there, but no clear record of the death of RUTH There is [in the 1810 census] an Ebenezer Johnson, age 26-44, in Moretown, Chittenden, VT, which is where Ruth was reported to have moved. His wife was also reported as age 26-44, with a daughter under age 10. Two doors from this Ebenezer Johnson, we find an Elisha Washburn, which was her stepson's name. Also, her brother, Jacob Goodale appears to have moved to VT. See his profile. From: "Vital Records Book of Wendell, MA:" "Wendell, January 9th, 1811-This may certify that the intention of marriage between William Harris of Moretown (State of Vermont) and RUTH JOHNSON of Wendell hath been entered with me 14 days and published according to law. Per me, Daniel Porter, Town Clerk." We have, so far, been unable to verify if this was our Ruth Goodell Tyrer Washburn, who married Ebenezer Johnson. It was NOT her daughter, Ruth, because she married a Phinney. "February 7, 1811-William Harris of Moretown (Vermont) and RUTH JOHNSON of Wendell." This may be the source of the information that RUTH moved to Moreton, but under the last name of Harris. GOODELL/TYRER/WASHBURN/JOHNSON. [On the Ancestry.com World Tree, a Gwendolyn McCabe has a death date for her of November 28, 1815 in Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont. You have to search under the name Elisha Washburn to find it. The War of 1812 erupted the following year and RUTH's sons, James and LUTHER were enlisted as soldiers in Concord, New York. It is also possible that their brother, John Tyrer was also in the war. From one unidentified source, in a family group record, it says that John married Judith Ashley and the family moved to Boston, MA. It was not John, but his brother, James L. Tyrer who married Judith. The youngest son, William was listed in this same family group sheet as having gone to sea as his occupation. That is the only reference to him that this researcher has come across so far. In the 1820 census, there is a woman called 'Ruth Goodell' living in Hartford, Washington Co, NY, not so far from Ezekiel and Asa Goodell.
