"1. I first of all give to my well beloved wife DEBORAH GOODAL the free and full improvement of all my estate, house improvements, cattle, and etc, so long as she remains my widow (the debts being paid out of the same) until my children come of age..." 1744: From: "Hampshire County, MA, Probate Papers of Isaac Goodale:" The Guardianship Papers for Isaac and Deborah's Children: "Know all men by these presents, that we, Benjamin Southwick, Benjamin Stacy and John Trask all of New Salem, so-called, in the County of Hampshire… are holden and stand firmly bound and obliged unto John Stoddard, esq… in the full sum of 100 pounds to be paid unto the said John Stoddard… in the office of Judge of probate of wills and for granting letters of administration on the estates of persons deceased, etc. Dated the 10th day of April, 1744. "The condition of this obligation is such that if the above bounden Benjamin Southwick, nominated and allowed to be guardian unto Ezekiel Goodale, a minor of above 14 years of age and one of the heirs of ISAAC GOODALE, late of New Salem in the County of Hampshire, deceased, shall and do well and truly perform and discharge the trust and office of guardian unto the said minor, and that in and by all things according to law; and shall render a plain and true account of his said guardianship upon oath… etc. Signed by Benjamin Southwick, Benjamin Stacy, and John Trask, in the presence of Daniel Lockton and Timothy Dwight." "DEBORAH lived as a widow for nine and a half years, and at her death, left a will which was probated 12 June, 1753." 1753: "Hampshire County Probates, The Last Will of Deborah Hawkins Goodell / Goodale:" "In the Name of God Amen. The 29th day of April Ano Domi 1753, I DEBORAH GOODALE of New Salem… Widow of ISAAC [III] GOODALE late of New Salem aforesaid deceased, being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing 'tis appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament:" "That is to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executor nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God; and as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to give me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner: "…to my beloved son Isaac [IV] Goodale, thirteen pounds, six shillings and eight pence… to be raised and levied out of my estate:" "…to my beloved son Ebenezer Goodale, two pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence…" "…to my beloved son James Goodale, two pounds thirteen shillings and four pence…" "And the remainder of my estate, after the legacies forementioned and the charge of my sickness and other just debts are paid, I give to my beloved son JONATHAN GOODALE, and my sons Isaac Goodale, Ebenezer Goodale and James Goodale and my beloved daughter Mary Goodale each an equal share." "…My said son Isaac Goodale [IV] my sole executor… DEBORAH GOODALE, her mark…" 1755: "The inventory of DEBORAH's estate was taken 9 February 1755, and indicates a relatively prosperous farmstead: "An Inventory of the estate of DEBORAH GOODELL, Late of New Salem District taken the 9th day of February Anno Dom 1755" one yoke of oxen 4 cows and 3 calves 3 yearlings 1 Bull and a small 2 year old heifer 14 sheep and lambs 1 small hog 1 mare and a colt a saddle and a bridle 2 ½ bushels corn about eighteen pounds of wool 30 pounds of salt pork 1 old churn ¼ one barrel 1 cow bell & strap 2 yards of to cloth about 8 pounds of hogs fat one old ax, one old yoke iron kettle frying pan, five sheets warming pan, brass kettle, tramels woolen bed clothes, curtins, two sheets staple & king, plow irons large chain Horse chains, brood hoe, cleavers 2 augurs, sham, hammer, pincers sickle and flesh fork, two bells Her wearing apparel Leather collar, small chain, pair hillards Christening blanket and napkins, looking glass Baker glasses & earthen ware and bible, bedstead Casket rider & ½ bushel and conch shell Chests, a box, bread tray, and table, two wheels Pail and dye tub, wooden ware and small basket Table linen, old skillet, & piper box Pewter, glass bottle, old chairs Meat barrel and small tub Daniel Shaw, Jeremiah Ballard, Joseph Houlton; apprises Hampshire Probate" 1753-54: The Guardianship Papers of Deborah Goodale's Children who were still minors: "Know all men by these presents, that we, Jeremiah Ballard and Jeremiah Meacham both of New Salem, so-called, and Isaac [IV] Goodale of Hadley, all of the County of Hampshire… are holden and stand firmly bound and obliged unto Timothy Dwight, esq… in the full sum of 300 pounds to be paid unto the said Timothy Dwight… in the office of Judge of probate of wills and for granting letters of administration on the estates of persons deceased, etc. Dated the 10th day of July, 1753." "The condition of this obligation is such that if the above James Ballard, nominated and allowed to be guardian unto James Goodale, a minor above 14 years of age and one of the heirs of ISAAC GOODALE, late of New Salem in the County of Hampshire, deceased, shall and do well and truly perform and discharge the trust and office of guardian unto the said minor, and that in and by all things according to law; and shall render a plain and true account of his said guardianship upon oath… etc. Signed by Jeremiah Ballard, Jeremiah Meacham and Isaac [IV] Goodale in the presence JONATHAN GOODALE and T Dwight, Jr." "Know all men by these presents, that we, Jeremiah Meacham and Jeremiah Ballard both of New Salem, so-called, and Isaac [IV] Goodale of Hadley, all of the County of Hampshire… are holden and stand firmly bound and obliged unto Timothy Dwight, esq… in the full sum of 300 pounds to be paid unto the said Timothy Dwight… in the office of Judge of probate of wills and for granting letters of administration on the estates of persons deceased, etc. Dated the 10th day of July, 1753." "The condition of this obligation is such that if the above James Ballard, nominated and allowed to be guardian unto Mary Goodale, a minor above 14 years of age and one of the heirs of ISAAC GOODALE, late of New Salem in the County of Hampshire, deceased, shall and do well and truly perform and discharge the trust and office of guardian unto the said minor, and that in and by all things according to law; and shall render a plain and true account of his said guardianship upon oath… etc. Signed by Jeremiah Meacham, Jeremiah Ballard and Isaac [IV] Goodale in the presence JONATHAN GOODALE and T Dwight, Jr." "Know all men by these presents, that we, Gideon Clark of Southampton and Benjamin Simmonds of Northhampton and Isaac Goodale of Hadley, all of the County of Hampshire… are holden and stand firmly bound and obliged unto Timothy Dwight, esq… in the full sum of 400 pounds to be paid unto the said Timothy Dwight… in the office of Judge of probate of wills and for granting letters of administration on the estates of persons deceased, etc. Dated the 18th day of February, 1754."
