Bridgman JOSEF SULDA, b. circa 1816, in Bohemia, the son of Josef and Anna (Memecek) Sulda; d. Oct. 11, 1898, in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, USA; m. circa 1840, in Bohemia, Marie Bily, dau. of Jan and Anna (Hrista) Bily. She was b. in Bohemia circa 1817, and d. Oct. 11, 1902, in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, USA. Josef and Marie Sulda spent the first fifty or more years of their lives in Bohemia, in or near the small town of Klatovy in western Bohemia, where Josef worked as a farmer. According to the 1900 U.S. federal census, Marie Sulda gave birth to twelve children, two of whom probably died in childhood. The surviving ten children lived to adulthood and eventually came to the United States with their parents. In the autumn of 1869, Josef and Marie and seven of their children emigrated to the United States, arriving at the port of New York City on board the S.S. Main on Nov. 15, 1869. Their three other children either preceded their parents to the U.S. or came shortly thereafter. The entire family settled in the village of Turners Falls, Massachusetts. Josef was employed at the John Russell Cutlery in Turners Falls for over twenty-five years. They lived in the Third Street block, owned by the cutlery, in Turners Falls. Josef’s obituary, printed in the Turners Falls Reporter, dated Oct. 19, 1898, reads as follows: “Death of Joseph Schulda, Sr. -- On Wednesday last, Joseph Schulda, a very much respected Bohemian citizen, passed away at the ripe age of 89 years. He had been a citizen of the village for many years, and was the leader of his countrymen here. He was a dignified old gentleman with courteous manners, and had the respect of all who knew him. His funeral was held Friday from St. Mary’s Church and was largely attended. He leaves a large family of grown up children and many grandchildren.” Marie (Bily) Sulda survived her husband by exactly four years to the day. Her obituary in the Turners Falls Reporter, dated Oct. 15, 1902, reads as follows: “Mrs. Mary Sulda, widow of the late Joseph Sulda, died at her home on Third Street, Saturday, at the age of 85 years. She had been in excellent health up to a short time before her death. Mrs. Sulda was the mother of a large family, several sons and a daughter, Mrs. Mathias Brokup, surviving her, beside a number of grandchildren. The funeral was held from St. Mary’s Church on Monday, and was largely attended.” CHILDREN (b. in Bohemia) I. Anna Sulda (Anna), b. Aug. 1844 or Aug. 1845; d. Sept. 5, 1914, in Turners Falls; m.
