Springfield, the capital of Hampden County, known far and wide as the "City of Homes," is one of the most attractive cities of New England, ranking the sixty-fifth city of importance in the United States and the tenth in population in Massachusetts. Situated on the east bank of the Connecticut River, about 60 miles from Long Island Sound, 98 miles west of Boston, 136 miles from New York City, and 103 miles from Albany, it commands an extensive wholesale and retail trade from every direction. No other city east of the Hudson River of twice its size enjoys a more substantial business front, and none with such magnificent scenery and natural advantages. Massachusetts, though comparatively small in area, ranks first as a state of cities, and Springfield ranks first in the state in municipal and financial prosperity. No other city has such a small net indebtedness. None of the thirty-one cities of the state has such a low tax rate. Springfield has an area of 16,655 acres, with about 2,934 acres of forest. With a population, census of 1895, of 51,534; with a total assessors' valuation of $59,033,141, and a net funded debt (water debt and sinking funds deducted) of $280,000; with the lowest percentage of indebtedness to valuation of any city in the state, or New England, is it to be wondered at that Worcester, Hartford, or New Haven, with a much larger population are envious of their sister city? Springfield, not to be egotistical, has a better class of people as merchants, and its citizens who are engaged in mechanical pursuits are among the most skilled in their different vocations. Enjoying a large commercial trade, with its merchants prosperous and industrious, the conditions cleanly, its magnificent streets and avenues, its abundant water supply, its excellent sewerage, its efficient private and public schools, beautiful drives, its well-equipped and managed street railway, sound banks, live newspapers, magnificent opera house, its picturesque Forest Park, Springfield commends itself as a place of residence or business. The industries are remarkably varied, almost every trade and mechanic art being represented, to the number of about six hundred different establishments. The leading articles are Cotton, "Woolen, Jute, and Silk Goods, Hosiery, Needles, Artisans' Tools, Hollow "Ware, Steam Engines and Boilers, Steam Valves, Machinery, Bicycles and Bicycle Sundries, "Wire Goods, Railroad Coaches and Street Cars, Locks, Skates, Buttons, Paper, Photograph Albums, Envelopes, Jewelry, Eyeglasses, Church Organs Brass, Iron, and Tin Ware, Military Goods, Rifles, Revolvers, and Fire-arms, Bricks, Leather, Paints Wire Mattresses, Gold Leaf, Perfumery and Extracts, Artificial Limbs, Clothes-line Reels, Anchors, Elevators, Beer and Carbonated Goods, Chemicals, Cigars, Electrical Supplies, Hats, Furniture, Screws, Toys, Yarn, Etc., Etc. The educational advantages of the private institutions deserve special mention aside from the public schools. One of the grandest of them all is the Springfield Industrial Institute in its new building on State street. Here we find the common sense idea of educating the young man to a trade. Supplied with modern machinery, tools, and mechanical devices, with a large corps of instructors, with finely equipped shops, and every facility at hand, it is probably the largest and finest school of its kind in this country. Pattern Making, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Machine Shop Practice, Plumbing, Masonry, and Mechanical Drawing and other trades are taught. "The Elms" has won a widespread reputation for thorough work. It ranks among the best college preparatory schools in the country, and an equal standard of excellence is required of its special students and those studying for its English, Classical, or Music diplomas. Especial attention is paid to the study of English. Frequent exercises in composition are required of all the students; they are taught to be very critical of their own and one another's daily speech, and their reading is carefully directed. Weekly classes for the study of the leading periodicals keep them informed concerning current literature and events. Magnolia Terrace, a school for girls, conducted by Mr. and Mrs. John McDuffie, has always been esteemed for its quiet home discipline, its development of mental and moral stability, and. its emphasis upon the substantial accomplishments of life. The attainment of these ends remains today the ruling principle in the conduct of this school. The grounds are beautiful and well cared for. They are regarded by many as the most attractive in the city. The School for Christian Workers, located at Winchester Park, State street, is one of the notable educational institutions of New England. Its purpose is the training of young men and young women for salaried positions in religious work. The institution is in a highly prosperous condition and represents one of the modern movements in Christian work. Springfield originally bore the Indian name of Agawam. It was organized a town May 14, 1636. Then it included all the territory now embraced by the city of Chicopee, towns of West Springfield, Wilbraham, Ludlow, Longmeadow, Enfield, and Somers, and parts of Westfield and Southwick. The name was changed to Springfield in 1741, in honor of William Pynchon, the leader of the colony, who had a mansion house in the town of Springfield, in Essex County, England. Incorporated a city May 25, 1852. The scenery of Springfield and its vicinity has long been regarded as beautiful. A few years ago a native of Springfield, during a visit to Scotland, spoke enthusiastically to his Scottish host of a particular view as the finest he had ever seen. The host, who at the time was not aware that his guest resided in Springfield, Mass., replied "that it was the finest he himself had ever seen, excepting one from the tower of the United States Arsenal on the Connecticut River."
