R. Gilfillan and H. E. Riley LIEUTENANT OLIVER EDWARDS, U. S. A. First Lieutenant Oliver Edwards, Co. D, 11th U. S. Infantry, was Northampton's most prominent representative in the regular army during the war. Though a native of Chesterfield he is a descendant of a family that has been prominent in Northampton for many years, and most of his boyhood up to the time of his appointment to West Point Academy in 1890 was spent here. He came of fighting stock, his paternal and maternal ancestors having held prominent positions in Colonial wars. After his graduation from the military academy in 1894 he was assigned to the 11th Infantry, stationed at Whipple Barracks, Arizona. There in 1897 he married the daughter of Major E. C. Gilbreath of the regiment. The 11th was one of the most efficient commands with Major-General Miles, in his expedition to Porto Rico. The death of Major Gilbreath occurred shortly after hostilities ceased and Lieut. Edwards brought the body to this country. He was then assigned to duty under Lieut.-Col. Weaver in mustering out volunteer regiments, his first work being with the Second Massachusetts, thus bringing him to Northampton, where he was welcomed by many friends. Later he was engaged at Chickamauga and Savannah, Ga. At his own request he was transferred to the 6th Infantry in April, 1899, that he might see active service in the Philippines, and on May 22 the regiment sailed on the transport Sherman for Manila.
