R. Gilfillan and H. E. Riley ENSIGN FRANK B. GAYLORD. Frank B. Gaylord, son of William M. Gaylord of this city, served throughout the war as an ensign on the auxiliary cruiser Yosemite. Prior to the war he had been for several years a member and officer of the Michigan Naval Reserves of Detroit, the finest body of Naval Militia in the country. Ensign Gaylord was the leading spirit in securing the U. S. gunboat Yantic as a practice-ship for the Reserves, and after government engineers had reported that the vessel could not be taken through the canals between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Ensign Gaylord made a tour of the route, took measurements and devised a plan by which a gunboat was successsully transferred to the lake station. The Yosemite saw considerable active service during the war. She conveyed the first party of American marines that landed on Cuban soil, at Guantanamo Bay, was engaged in several skirmishes with Spanish gunboats, and participated in bombardments of shore batteries. The most important engagement was with two Spanish gunboats and the forts in San Juan harbor, Porto Rico, when the little cruiser was under fire for nearly four hours, finally driving off the gunboats and silencing the forts. Ensign Gaylord's station in action was in charge of the powder magazine. Though not a native of Northampton Ensign Gaylord lived here from babyhood until he was 20 years old, when he entered the iron business at Detroit in which his father was interested. He is a man of fine character. and attractive personality and has many friends in Northampton. After the cessation of hostilities he returned to private life and is now manager of a large iron business at Deseronto, Ontario.
