All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by: Cliff McCarthy camcca@charter.net ************************************************************************ Belchertown, MA Obit James Harvey Davis Death of Oldest Resident James Harvey Davis, 93, died Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Harriet Hamilton after an illness of two weeks. His death removes Belchertown's oldest citizen, the owner of the gold-headed cane. Mr. Davis was born in Prescott, June 27, 1823, the son of John and Priscilla Davis. As a young man he learned the carriage building trade of Simeon Pepper in Belchertown and continued in it as long as the carriage industry flourished. He then took up the carpenter's trade, working on many buildings in town including the residence of Col. M. P. Walker. May 12, 1847 he married Lucy Anne Mecorney of Southbridge. She died 19 years ago. Four sons were born all of whom are now dead. After the death of his wife Mr. Davis lived in Holyoke until six years ago when he returned to Belchertown. Mr. Davis was an active, industrious worker, making canes and axe handles, picking berries, and making wreaths. Mr. Davis leaves four grand-daughters, Miss Frances Fiske and Mrs. Caroline Fiske Rae of Dorchester, Miss Hazel Davis of Springfield, and Miss Mabel Davis of Canon City, Colo. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock in the Congregational chapel, Rev. J. H. Chandler officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery. The bearers were Wm. Shaw, Daniel Hazen, Clinton Hamilton, and Dwight Shumway. -- Belchertown Sentinel, Friday, February 23, 1917
