The following pedigree of the family in England, I received from Mr. S. Hammond Russell, through the obliging attention of Dr. T. W. Harris of Cambridge. Thomas Hammond of Cavenham, County of Suffolk, England, married May 14, 1573, Rose Trippe. He was buried November 24, 1589. Children: 1. Elizabeth Hammond bap. April 1, 1574. 2. William Hammond bap. Oct 30, 1575; "settled in New England - Watertown; m. June 9, 1605, Elizabeth Payne (?Penn) Children: 1. William Hammond bap Sept 20, 1607. 2. Anne Hammond bap. Nov 19, 1609. 3. John Hammond bap. Dec 5, 1611. 4. Anne (again) bap July 14, 1616. 5. Thomas Hammond bap. Sept 17, 1618, of Watertown, Mass. 6. Elizabeth Hammond b. about 1619 (aged 15 in April, 1634; m. _____House. 7. Sarah Hammond b. abt 1624 (aged 10 in April, 1634). 8. John Hammond (again) b. abt 1627 (aged 7 in April 1634; of Watertown. 9. Benjamin Hammond (see Farmer) Prob. he was not the youngest child and he is not mentioned in his father's Will. 3. Rose Hammond bap. April 22, 1578. 4. Martha Hammond bap. Nov 6, 1579. 5. Maria Hammond bap April 22, 1587. 6. Susan Hammond. 7. Thomas Hammond bap. Jan 9, 1586? of Hingham, afterwards of Newton. William Hammond, eldest son of Thomas and Rose Hammond probably came to America previous to the year 1634 as he does not appear to have ________________________________________________________ p.270 accompanied his wife and children that year. Probably he did not settle immediately in Watertown as he was not a proprietor in February, 1636/7 but he was so in 1642. His wife, Elizabeth, aged 47 and daughter, Elizabeth, aged 15 years; daughter Sarah, aged 10 years and son John, Aged 7 years, embarked from Ipswich, England in the ship, Francis, April 1634. (see the foregoing pedigree for his marriage and the names and ages of his children. He was admitted freeman May 25, 1636 and was Selectman, 1648. He died in Watertown oct 8, 1662 aged 90 and his widow, Elizabeth died Sept 14, 1670, "aged about 90." It will be observed that this age does not correspond with that given at her embarkation. Probably the latter is the correct one. His Will dated July 1, proved Dec. 16, 1662 mentions wife Elizabeth; son John; grandson Thomas, son of his son Thomas, daughters, Elizabeth House, ___Barnes and Sarah Smith. In a suit in 1652, Thomas Hammond vs John Bridge, it appears that Hammond had an uncle (named) Page. Thomas Hammond son of William Hammond m. about 1654, Hannah Cross. He died Dec 10, 1655. His Will, dated Nov 6, 1655, mentions his wife Hannah, daughter of Hannah Cross; and he provided for an expected posthumous child. His widow died March 24, 1656/7. By her Will, dated March 19, 1656/7, she gave to her mother half the rent of the Cross farm in Ipswich. To John Sherman and to each of his children £5; to John Livermore £4. 12 shillings; the remainder to her mother and John Sherman in trust for her son, who was committed to their care. The Inventory of Thomas Hammond (by Edward Garfield, John Coolidge, Joseph Tainter, and Anthony White), dated Dec 22, 1655. House, barn and up- land bought of John Stowers, £120. Cross farm in Ipswich with 7 cows and 2 oxen, £200. Housing and land in England at Lavingham, renting £14 per year, £120. (1) Sarah b. 1643 d. Jan 14, 1688, aged 45, the mother of his children and he left a widow, Prudence, who died Sept 1711, aged 74 years. His Will was dated Nov 18, - Inventory dated Nov 29 and Will proved Dec 9, 1709. He died Nov 22, 1709, aged 85 years, 4 mos., so the grave-stone states; probably should be 82 years. Inventory £961. 8 shillings. In 1690, his assessment was the largest in the town and next his was that of William Bond, Esq. May 16, 1665 he was appointed guardian of his kinswoman, Mehitable Hawkins. Children: 1. John Hammond b. Feb 3, 1653/4; died 1659. 2. Elizabeth Hammond b. Mart 6, 1655; m. John Mason. 3. His name is the last on the list of proprietors, made out 1642-1644. He then owned a homestall, "given him by Thomas Hastings." This gift renders it probable that he was a kinsman of Deacon Hastings. He was admitted freeman May 27, 1663 and he m. Oct 1, 1649 (?48), Susanna George b. 1632, who d. July 6, 1694 and he d. May 17, 1707. Susanna), he mentions his sons, John, Daniel, Benjamin, Samuel, Thomas, Edward (his "youngest son," to whom he gave his homestead. and daughters, Susanna Beers, Mary Bemis, Sarah Winship; Joseph, son of "my son Joseph, deceased," and dau-in-law, Joanna Ward ________________________________________________________ p.273 late wife of his son Joseph. In Inventory mentions 16 lots of land amounting to 642-1/2 acres, and appraised at £717. Dec. 24, 1684, he bought of Jeremiah Dummer, a goldsmith of Boston for £90 the west or south- west half (250 acres) of the Oldham farm where some of his descendants have continued to reside until the present (1860) time. It was bounded west by Joseph Garfield; north by Richard Cutting, widow Sarah Fiske and said Gar- field; east by Abraham Gale and John Gale; south by the Charles River. Sept. 28, 1685, he gave to his son, Joseph, 55 acres of land, which he bought of Simon Cooledge, Jan 29, 1679/80 which Simon had bought of Simon Stone and which he, Simon Stone had bought of the widow and heirs of Rev. Henry Green, to whom it had been granted by the town. It is very probable that all the families of the name of Harrington in New England, are descended from Robert Harrington of Watertown. They are very numerous and widely dispersed. There was a Richard Harrington, or Arrington of Charlestown in 1643, but I have not discovered that he left any descendants bearing his name or that he was related to Robert Harrington of Watertown. Hugh Mason; and it may be expected to be a model for works of this kind. The plan of this work seems to require the insertion of the following brief genealogy, on account of its numerous connexions with other families. But no one, interested in such inquiries or in this family, should be satisfied with this brief article, which is considerably less extended than it would have been, except for that expected work. (1) Capt. Hugh Mason, a tanner, one of the very first settlers of Watertown, was admitted freeman March 4, 1634/5; Representative 1644, 1645, 1660, 1661, 1664, 1671, 1674, 1675, 1676, and 1677; Selectman, 29 years between 1639 and 1678; inclusive; a Lieutenant as early as 1649, was made Captain May 5, 1652. He was for many years one of the three Commiss- ioners appointed by the County Court to determine small cases. This was before the appointment by the court of Justices of the Peace. Dec 18, 1660, he was appointed on a Committee to take account of John Steadman, County treasurer and make a levy, etc. It has been conjectured that he was a brother of Capt John Mason the distinguished Pequot warrior. He died Oct 10, 1678 aged 73. By wife, Esther, who died May 1, 1692 he had 7 children: 1. Hannah b. Sept 23, 1636; m. Oct 17, 1653, Capt. Joshua Brooks of Concord, eldest son of Capt.
