Oak Grove & Vine Hills Cemetaries (Part 1 of 18 Parts), Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360. Bordering Route 44 (Samoset Street) on the north, Summer Street on the south, and Westerly Road on the west. The cemeteries were established at least as early as 1802. Directions: Going south on Route 3, exit at 6A toward the waterfront onto Route 44 East. The cemetaries are on the right immediately past the exit ramp. Transcriptions by Mary Aguilar, Nicholas Harris and Kendra Harris began 09/08/01; last updated on 05/05/02 and completed on 07/13/02. This huge undertaking does not include the newest portions of the cemeteries. Dates appear from the earliest (1749) to the latest (2002), although some "residents" were actually born before the earliest transcribed dates noted herein. NOTE: There are two identified Medal of Honor winners buried in this cemetery. Spellings are as they appear on the stone (i.e., WHITING may also spelled WHITEING and WITING; PIERCE may also be spelled PEIRCE; BEARSE may also spelled BEARCE; etc.). In some cases, Olde English is as transcribed, but limitations on the keyboard require using the closest facsimile of the letter(s) or number(s) that appear on the stone. Where we have typed a question mark in a parenthesis "(?)" means that we are not able to determine exactly what is engraved on the stone, but have taken an educated guess: e.g., "1853(?)" means "It appears to 1853"; or "Annabelle(?)" means "It appears to be ANNABELLE." A question mark without a parenthesis "?" simply means that an alpha or numeric in a word or date cannot be exactly ascertained but again, an educated guess is made: "185?" means "eighteen-hundred-and-fifty-something"; or "Born ? 7, 1853" means "born on the 7th in an unreadable month in 1853"; or "? JONES" means "unreadable given name JONES". Most of the stones are in good-to-excellent condition as of our latest undertaking (May 5, 2002); however, there are some ancient stones that are shattered, broken, worn from age, eroded, buried, lichen-covered, obliterated from repair, or missing, making it difficult, if not impossible, to transcribe. Using only water, we are able to clean some stones with limited success. In addition, some plots appear to have graves with no markers, and some stones that are partially exposed on the surface of the ground, or that have fallen, are too heavy to lift in order to transcribe. In all of these cases, notations are made to that affect. As with most "working" cemetaries, some markers may have been removed for maintenance or repair. In these cases, we would have no knowledge of the missing marker(s). Finally, important to note is that we are extremely careful to ensure that NO STONES ARE DAMAGED DURING THIS PROJECT. ******************************************************************************** SPEAR JOHN R.
