South Pond Cemetery, Long Pond Road, Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360, is located in the South Plymouth section of the town. The cemetery was established at least as early as 1793. Directions: Going south on Route 3, exit at #5. Take a right onto Long Pond Road. Go straight through the lights, passing Plymouth Community Intermediate School on the right. About 1.2 miles past the school, take a right onto Cemetery Hill Road at the South Pond Chapel. (Cemetery Hill Road is a dirt road- the 3d road on the right past the school.) About 5/10 of a mile on the dirt road, pass a cranberry bog on the right. Bear left at the fork. A sign is posted that reads: "So. Pond Cemetery". The cemetery is 1/20 of a mile beyond the fork at the crest of the hill. Transcriptions by Mary Aguilar on 05/20/02. Dates appear from the earliest (1793) to the latest (2001), although unmarked mounds and depressions in the earth may be actual graves of unknown date. Spellings are as they appear on the stone. There are documented instances of different spellings of the same name, e.g., "BURGESS" also appears as "BURGES"; and 'SAMPSON" also appears as 'SAMSON". In some cases, Olde English is as transcribed, but limitations on the keyboard require using the closest facsimile of the letter(s) or number(s) that appear on the stone. Where I have typed a question mark in a parenthesis "(?)" means that I am not able to determine exactly what is engraved on the stone, but have taken an educated guess: e.g., "1853(?)" means "It appears to 1853"; or "BURGESS(?)" means "It appears to be BURGESS." A question mark without a parenthesis "?" simply means that an alpha or numeric in a word or date cannot be exactly ascertained but again, an educated guess is made: "185?" means "eighteen-hundred- and-fifty-something"; or "Born ? 7, 1853" means "born on the 7th in an unreadable month in 1853"; or "? BURGESS" means "unreadable given name BURGESS". Most of the stones are in good-to-excellent condition; however, some ancient stones are shattered, broken, worn from age, flaking, eroded, buried, lichen-covered, obliterated from repair, or missing, making it difficult, if not impossible, to transcribe. Using only water, I am able to clean some stones with limited success. In addition, some mounds and sunken depressions in the earth appear to be graves with no marker; and some stones are only partially exposed on the surface of the ground, making it difficult to transcribe. In all of these cases, notations are made to that affect. Finally, important to note is that I am extremely careful to ensure that NO STONES ARE DAMAGED DURING THIS PROJECT. **************************************************************************************************** In memory of WILLIAM BURGESS born May 8, 1762 died Jan.y 25, 1836 aged 73 Y.rs and 8 mon A Husband kind & Parent dear A Neighbour just & Friend sincere While we on earth our loss deplore We view him safe on cannans shore. footstone: W.B.
