White Horse Cemetery, Cedar Road, Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360, is in the White Horse Beach section of the town. This cemetery was originally called "Burial Hill" when the current Burial Hill was known as "Fort Hill". The cemetery was established at least as early as 1717. Directions: Going south on Route 3, exit left at #4 toward White Horse Beach. Take a left onto Rocky Hill Road following for several miles, past the nuclear power plant, and through one set of lights. After passing Priscilla Beach Theater on the left, take your third right onto Cedar Road. Just around the corner, the cemetery is situated behind two private residences. Transcriptions by Mary Aguilar on 05/10/02 for Cemetery Superintendent, Town of Plymouth, Bradford Bartlett. Dates appear from the earliest (1717) to the latest (1943), although unmarked depressions in the earth may be actual graves of unknown date. Spellings are as they appear on the stone. There are documented instances of different spellings of the same name, e.g., "BARTLETT" also appears as "BARTLET", and "NAAMAN" also appears as "NAMAN". In some cases, Olde English is as transcribed, but limitations on the keyboard require using the closest facsimile of the letter(s) or number(s) that appear on the stone. Where I have typed a question mark in a parenthesis "(?)" means that I am not able to determine exactly what is engraved on the stone, but have taken an educated guess: e.g., "1853(?)" means "It appears to 1853"; or "GIDEON(?)" means "It appears to be GIDEON." A question mark without a parenthesis "?" simply means that an alpha or numeric in a word or date cannot be exactly ascertained but again, an educated guess is made: "185?" means "eighteen-hundred-and-fifty-something"; or "Born ? 7, 1853" means "born on the 7th in an unreadable month in 1853"; or "? CORNISH" means "unreadable given name CORNISH". Most of the stones are in good-to-excellent condition; however, some ancient stones are shattered, broken, worn from age, flaking, eroded, buried, lichen-covered, obliterated from repair, or missing, making it difficult, if not impossible, to transcribe. Using only water, I am able to clean some stones with limited success. In addition, some sunken depressions in the earth appear to be graves with no markers, and some stones are only partially exposed on the surface of the ground, or are surrounded by poison ivy or thick brush, making it difficult to transcribe. In all of these cases, notations are made to that affect. Finally, important to note is that I am extremely careful to ensure that NO STONES ARE DAMAGED DURING THIS PROJECT. *************************************************************************************************** Dea ISRAEL CLARK Died Nov 2, 1884 Aged 90 y'rs 3 mo's (Footstone: I.C.)
