Mrs. Shaw a native of Oxford, Massachusetts was born January 22, 1808. In 1820 her family moved to Ellsburg, New York, where on the 6th of November, 185, she was united in marriage to John Shaw. In 1839 they moved from New York to Dubuque and then to Bellevue. On Jine 6, 1842 they moved to Maquoketa, making this city their permanent abode. In 1853, the father and husband died, leaving to the mother and children a valuable estate which afforded a sufficient competence for the maintenance and education of the family. Mrs. Shaw was one of the original founders of the Congregational Society of Maquoketa in 1843. She was always an active and devoted worker in the cause of the church. She leaves four daughters and one son to mourn her loss. The funeral occurred from the Congregational Church on Wednesday, May 18th, at 2 p.m. The remains were followed to their last resting place by a large procession. The services were conducted by Rev. Salter the pastor of the Congregational Church.
