He -was the third oldest of eleven children born to Robert Reid- and Bridget Ennis Reid. His ances tors came to Cumberland with the very earliest settlers before the city was laid out by Captain Thomas Beall of Samuel. Mr. Reid received his education -in the school of practical experience, from which he graduated at an early age, and in which he now occupies a position as one of its principal teachers. He early took up con struction work of various kinds, and for a number of years was contractor for street cleaning in the city, during which time he brought into operation a number of innovations that resulted in the city's being cleaner than it had ever been known to be before. Since the spring of 1916, Mr. Reid has been connected with The Vang Construction Company of Cumber land, Md. In connection with Ms duties with this company, he had an unusual opportunity for observation and experi ence in reference to construction work of many kinds for municipalities and rail roads. His activities extended as far west as St. Louis and as far east as Ne^- York. In August, 1921, he was appointed City Commissioner, to fill out the unexpired term of the late Theodore A. K. Hummel- shine. In March, 1922, he was elected to the office of Commissioner, and at the present time is Commissioner of Police and Fire, the duties of which office he satisfactorily performs. During the strike period of the summer of 1922, by his diplomacy and good judgment at the head of the department, he succeeded in main taining good order under very trying con ditions. M^. Reid is familiar with all the affairs of the municipality; and the results of the election prove that he is esteemed by all classes as a public official.
