These entries were gleaned from three sources: The Maryland Hall of Records (MDHR), the courthouses in the earlier counties of Maryland including Kent (MDKEN), Queen Anne (MDQA), Frederick (MDFRE), and Washington (MDWAS), and the U.S. Census of 1800. Most of the entries after 1789, the year Allegany County was formed, were available at the Allegany County Court House (MDALL). As previously mentioned, the earliest of these records, 1606 to 1738, requires additional research to determine their link with our first ancestors, Robert and Hannah Twigg in 1743. 1606, June 10 Kent County, MD Rent Rolls MDHR#1:14 & 5:14 Index #56, Drawer 14 "Hermitage" is surveyed for Matthew Cope and Sutton Quenty between the branches of Norron and Farloe Creeks. 100 acres "Cofs" John Tweeg for the heirs of Condues - 200 acres by Mary Cope. This land was surveyed on May 28, 1743 and is located in what is now Washington County near Boonsboro, MD on the Antietam Creek. (Interestingly, 1743 is the year John Twigg from Kent County died. Did Robert strike out on his own in search of greener pastures after the death of his father?) Land Record, Frederick County, MDFRE #LR 3:112 Nov 10, 1745: Robert Twigg is granted land called "Jerico" containing 44 acres. This land is also located in Washington County along the Antietam Creek near the tract called "Bore Range." (Still called "Jerico" the land is currently owned (1998) by Taylor and Pat Lemkuhl). Land Record, Frederick County, MDFRE #LR J: 691. Jul 7, 1764: Robert and Hannah, his wife, sell "Jerico" and "Bore Range" to Michael Taylor for 155 pounds. Description of land in deed: "east side of Antietam Creek." Note: It was in this transaction that Hannah's name was revealed as she relinquished her dower rights to the property. Interestingly, James and Joseph Smith were witnesses to the deed, the very same witnesses who appeared on the deed to Sink Hole Bottom, land in Allegany County which Robert would purchase in 1768. It is unknown where Robert and Hannah went when they left Frederick County (now Wash. Co.). It is possible that since the French & Indian War (1754-1763) created a hostile environment in the area, the couple moved their family east toward present day Frederick for a safe haven. It is speculated that Robert joined the British Army and went to war at this time. A Robert Twigg served in Captain Moses Chaplin's Company in the Colonial War and was discharged in 1767 in Maryland. See following entry! Military (Colonial Muster & Payroll) MDHR, Colonial War 1767: Robert Twigg is listed as being in Captain Moses Chaplin's Company and is discharged in this year.
