_________________________________________________________________________ Introduction: I believe (no, I KNOW) my gr-gr-grandfather, Harrison Twigg is the child mentioned in this case. I work so hard trying to find the proof needed to make this fact. Given Harrison's age in some census (and like everyone else's, it does vary) he was born within the timeframe of 1822. Harrison named his first daughter, Savilla and his second daughter, Ruth. Savilla lived with Ruth Farmer Twigg until her death in 1838 and according to the census records, the male child was also in that household. Harrison married Jane Twigg, the daughter of Brice and Mary (Polly) Twigg. The name of his third daughter was Mary and I believe helps confirm the fact there was some sort of pattern to their naming their children after family members. JAMES TWIGG: (MSA No. T1784 - Allegany County Circuit Court Papers) (April Term 1826) Maryland, Allegany County to wit: On application to me by Survilla Twigg, the mother of a male Illegetimate child, for an order on James Twigg the father of her said child, for a sum of money adequate for the maintenance of her said child, she the said Survilla Twigg on the sixth day of January eighteen hundred and twenty five before me one of the Justices of the Peace in and for said County, appears and makes oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God, that she hath not received any sum or sums of money from James Twigg or his security for the use of maintenance of her said child in her care and custody more than five dollars and she hath maintained the said child from the twenty eight day of May eighteen hundred and twenty two to this time at which time it was of the age of two years and more. You are hereby ordered and required to pay unto the said Survilla Twigg the sum of thirty dollars, (deducting the said five dollars) from the first year as an adequate consideration for the maintenance of the said Illegitimate child for every year from the said twenty eighth day of May 1822 until the same shall arrive at the age of seven years. This document is in reference to Savilla Twigg vs. James Twigg #1 as ordered to be served by the Sheriff Savilla Twigg vs. James Twigg - 10 Oct. 1825 (Continuation of MSA #1784 Allegany County Circuit Court) The State of Maryland to the Sheriff of Allegany County Greeting: Whereas: James Twigg and Griffin on the twelfth day of August in the year eighteen hundred and twenty two, before William Newman, Esquire a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of aforesaid, acknowledges themselves to owe and stand indebted to the State of Maryland in the sum of thirty pounds current money which they yielded and granted shoud be made levied of their bodies goods and chatels lands and tenements for the use of the said State upon condition nevertheless that if the said James Twigg shall indemnify Allegany County from all manner of charges that may arrise from the maintenance of a male illigetamate child begotton on the body of Survilla Twigg of which she was delivered on the twenty eighth day of May last and whereas the said Survilla Twigg, victim of the peace or of said, hath by this order bearing date 22nd day of May 1825 directed the said James Twigg and Griffen Twigg or either of them to pay to Samuel McBride the sum of thirty dollars for the maintenance of the said illegitamate child; and whereas it appears from the oath of the said Samuel McBride that he served the order for the payment of the said allowance on the said James Twigg and Griffen Twigg and demanded payment thereof and that the same was not paid: and whereas it appears also from the oath of the said Survilla Twigg, that she maintained the said child from the 22nd day of May 1824 to the 22nd day of May 1825 and that the money thereon due is unpaid: These are therefore to command you to summon the said James Twigg and Griffin Twigg to be and appear before the Judge of Allegany County Court next to be held at the Court House in the Town of Cumberland on the third Monday of April next to show cause, if any they have, why Judgment and executions upon the acknowlegment aforesaid should not bet be rendered against them according to the form of this act of Assembly if such case made and provided witness to the Honorable John Buchanan, Esquire , Chief Judge of our said Court the 10th day of October 1825. **************************************************************************** Warrant Issued the 31st day of March 1826 R.P. If I ever gain possession of the missing documents, the information will be added at that time.
