Rev 1 I had two research efforts with Ulster Ancestry.com (sales@ulsterancestry.com; mailing address: Ulster Ancestry 41 Knightsbridge. Waterside Londonderry N. Ireland BT476FE Tel: +44 ()) 287 134 7548 The text of the research is listed below: Wsazq Research #1 6 April 2002, conducted by Robert Williams, ulsterancestry.com Results of short search carried out on behalf of Larry McGirr, Warner Robins, GA, USA; Research carried out by Robert Williams, Ulster Ancestry, Londonderry, N. Ireland Information supplied by client on which search has been based: Ancestors name: James McGirr, DoB (Date of Birth) c.1785, PoB (Place of Birth) Armagh, perhaps Tyrone. Ancestors spouse: Jane McGirr, Date of marriage c. 1805, Place: Ireland, Date of departure: 1815. The Name McGirr Mac Girr: This is the most usual form of the name Mac an Ghirr and as such belongs to the border area of Armagh and Tyrone. In the former it occurs as a “principle Irish name” in the “census” of 1659 and it is also recorded in the Hearth Money Rolls (1664) of Tyrone. Three families of the name also appear in the Hearth Money Rolls of Co. Monaghan. The family were in Co. Armagh and well established there before the Plantation of 1603 and is recorded in 1602 as MacEghir; as MacGhair and Mac Gerr and we meet them again in the Ulster inquisitions of County Tyrone in 1628 and 1639. Shane MacGirr of Fintona in Co Tyrone was one of the Jacobites exiled to America after 1690, settling in South Carolina. All modern birth registrations show Tyrone to be now its location and there are a number of modern day McGirr’s to be found in Donegal in the region of Raphoe, parish of Taughboyne. The variant MacGeer is found in North Leinster. There are a few families of the name in Connaght but not enough to justify any form of it being regarded as belonging to that Province. “Woulfe” mentions Short, Shorthill, Gayer, and McGarr as variants and synonyms of MacGirr. Short is the semi translation of Mac an Gheairr (Gearr meaning short, of small statue) ( macGirr literally means “son of the short man”). This form of the name is sometimes used in Tyrone. The Search for James McGirr It was the clients understanding that James may have been a native of Armagh and so with this in mind I commenced my search with County Armagh records. I began by searching the following records: Armagh census of 1664 ref t808/14988: No Mc Girr names found. Poll tax lists 1665 ref t808/14929: No McGirr names found. Armagh Hearth Money Roll for 1666 refD/2394/3/6: No McGirr names found. Returns of Protestant Householders for Armagh 1740 T808/15258: No Mc Girr names found. Census of Armagh 1766 ref T/3709: No McGirr names found: Census of inhabitants of Armagh City 1770 ref 389/T1228: No McGirr names found. Flax growers list for Co Armagh 1796: No McGirr names found. Census of Portadown 1821 ref 281/7: No McGirr names found. It was not until I searched the Tithe Applotment (Appointment?) Books of 1828 that I encountered the first Mc Girr family names in Armagh. • McGir; Barony of Armagh 1 family • McGirr; Barony of Oneilland West 2 families • Mc Girr; Barony of Armagh 1 family I then accessed and looked up the actual tithe book for more details of these four families. Surveyed in 1828 and again in 1834, the details are as follows: • Parish of Tartaraghan, Townland of Crangahill o John McGirr renting from Joseph Atkinson house and land. Area 2 roods and 15 perces value Ł1 15 shillings per year. • Parish of Tartaraghan, Towland of Cranagill o Owen McGer, renting from Capt. Atkinson. Land only, 2 roods of land, 5 roods of road and lake. • 30 Thomas Street, Armagh City, Parish of Armagh o Francis McGirr renting from John Jones. House outbuilding and yard. Value Ł18 per year. • Parish of Drumcree, Townland of Breagh o Joseph McGirr renting from John A. Woodhouse. House, outbuilding and land to the value of Ł12 15 shillings per year. In the revision books (ref val/2b/2/24a page 32) • In the Townland of Breagh we find o Joseph McGirr with a house, land and outbuildings value Ł1 (pound) • Also searched were Val/1b/226/a, Val/1b/226/b, Val/1b,226/c. Analysis of the above: The earliest record of MacGirr in Armagh is found in 1595 in the form of a letter from Hugh Earl of Tyrone concerning a grant of land in Armagh to Patrick MacGill (? Does he mean McGirr?) by the Archbishop of Armagh ref T695/2/168. The first modern records of Mc Girr in County Armagh were not found until 1828 by which time James was already in America (note: he and Jane and their daughter Mary Jane emigrated to Allegany Cty. MD (now Garret county MD) in 1815. Mary Jane was born 22 Jun 1811, in Ireland. In the 1870 US Census Mary says she is from Armagh IR. James and Mary’s son William C(larance?) was born during the voyage ‘on the water’ in June or Jul 1815) so although there are mentions of McGirr as early as 1595 in this country (Ireland) we can assume that they were not resident there (Co Armagh) at the time of James’s birth in (c.) 1785. Having first consulted with the client I carried the search to County Tyrone. In the Hearth Money Rolls for County Tyrone we find the following 1633-1666: • Clogher: o Art McGirr o Cormack McGirr o Dohakhy (Donaghey) McGirr o Hugh McGirr o Knogher McGirr o Loughlan McGirr o Margaret Mc Girr o Owen McGirr o Owen Dow McGirr o Phelemy McGirr x 3 o Shan Roe McGirr (Red John McGirr) o Torlogh McGirr From a list of Baptism’s in Clogher 1666: Owen McGirr’s child Patric Ogrine McGirr. This would make him age 21 in 1806, The clients James is said to have been from either Tyrone or Armagh. (Clogher Barony extends into BOTH Armagh and Tyrone). The client’s James was a protestant. Based on my research to date we find three James McGirrs. Only one James McGirr falls into all three categories. James McGirr shown as living in Barony of Clogher, Parish of Errigle Kerrogue, Townland of Glencuil. More research would be necessary to establish if this is the client’s James McGirr and his relationship to the other McGirr’s found in the same Parish and townland. McGirr doc #2 24 Jun 2002 This extended research report carries on from McGirr Report No1 and should be read in conjunction with it. Research carried out by Robert Williams Ulster Ancestry Londonderry N. Ireland www.ulsterancestry.com researchers@ulsterancestry.com The initial brief commissioned by Lawrence R. McGirr II was to determine the origins in Ireland of the client’s ancestor James McGirr. In the original search we were able to establish that at the time and date of James’s departure for the U.S. all the possible James McGirrs who matched in age resided in the Clogher area of South Tyrone and in particular the Parishes of Errigal/Clogher. I used this as my starting point for this full search. I learned by contacting a McGirr family historian in Tyrone that these families living in the Clogher Valley were in fact all related and were collectively known as the “Tailor McGirr’s” presumably from some past connection with the trade. I contacted and spoke with 80 year old James McGirr a living descendant of the Kilgreen family who is still living in Kilgreen, Augher, Ballygawley, Co Tyrone. I started the search among the registers of Clogher Cathedral: • Baptisms 1763-1935 • Marriages 12796-1845 • Burials 1783- • Reft/2655/4/1 • Ref mic/1/22-3 We immediately find that the Church Warden in 1727 was Edward McGirr. James McGirr was Church Warden in 1734 and again in 1737 and 1738. His brother John McGirr was Warden in 1735. James gave his abode as Carryclogher. Unfortunately no birth record was found for a James McGirr in or around 1785, or a McGirr marriage in 1784. I did find in the churchyard the following McGirr graves which I have transcribed: • Ref 111: Here lieth the body of John McGirr who departed this life the 3rd. May 1768 aged 76 years (1692-3 May 1768). In a grave next to this is: Here lieth the body of John McGirr the younger, who departed this life 12th Jan 1770 age 23 years (1747-12 Jan 1770). John McGirr the younger is the son of John McGirr who died in 1768. • Ref 116; This stone was erected by Anne O’Donnelly in memory of her husband Felix McGirr who departed this life March 1787, aged 60 years (1717-Mar 1787). Here lieth the body of Owen McGirr who departed this life 22nd. Feb 1740 aged 74 years (1666-22 Feb 1740). • Ref 301: Erected by Anne and Susan McGirr in memory of their beloved Father Edward McGirr of Clarmore who departed this life in March 1836 aged 70 years (1760-Mar 1836) and also their beloved brother James McGirr who departed this life 22nd. May 1854 aged 34 years (1820-22 May 1854). • Ref 303: Here lieth the body of Hugh McGirr who departed this life 2nd Nov 1767 aged 21 years (1746-2 Nov 1767). • Ref 316: Here lieth the body of Bryan McGirr who departed this life 4th May 1733 aged 67 years (1666-4 May 1733). I next searched the civil census of Tyrone taken on 21st July 1766. We again find in Errigle, Diocese of Cloger: • James McGirr • John McGirr • Hugh McGirr • Arthur McGirr (Larry McGirr note, ancestry.com Ireland 1766 Religious Census lists 3 McGirr’s: • McGirr, John-Catholic, Diocese: Armagh, Parish: Aghalow & Carntell, County: Tyrone • McGirr, Arthur-Protestant, Diocese: Armagh, Parish: Aghalow & Carnteel, County: Tyrone • McGirr, James-Protestant, Diocese-Armagh, Parish-Aghalow & Carnteel, County- Tyrone) We already know from our previous search that in 1796 according to the Bounty list of that year: Parish of Errigle • Patrick McGirr • Terrance McGirr • Edward McGirr • Felix McGirr Parish of Clogher • Terrance McGirr • Robert McGirr • James McGirr • Thomas McGirr We have already found the graves of some of the above mentioned McGirr’s in Clogher Cathedral. I then searched Estate Records for leases and land agreements: • From the Verner Estate papers ref D236 o 24th Jul 1809, Stephen McGirr, Foremas, Co Tyrone, Lease for one life 1st November 1808 50 acres annual rent Ł7 per year o 8th May 1820, John McGirr, Shantaveny, Co Tyrone, Draft lease for one life or 21 years from Nov. 1818 of 9 acres 6 perches, rent Ł4 pounds 5 schillings and 5 pence per year From the list of Apploters (Tax Collectors) for the Grand Jury 1838 Clogher, Ref T/2655/4/4: James McGirr, Aughadarra, Clogheer Co Tyrone. In order to expand on the information found in the tithe books I next searched the 1841 and 1851 census returns. These returns are incomplete but I was hoping to find some complete McGirr family pedigrees as these included people not residing in the Parish at that time who were family members (In some cases they record people as yet unborn!): • Tyrone, Clogher District (all ages are as in 1841) o McGirr Owen head of house, no age given, married 1st 1819, 2nd 1839 - McGirr Susan 2nd wife no age given - McGirr Francis son age 17 - McGirr Thomas son age 15 - McGirr William son age 12 - McGirr Ally daughter age 10 - McGirr Owen son age 8 - McGirr James son age 4 (perhaps 7) - McGirr Margaret daughter age 5 months - McGirr Mary 1st wife no details given • Tyrone, Cloger, Syunshin (again ages as in 1841) o McGirr Patrick, head, age 33, married 1832 (b~1808) - McGirr Sally wife, age 29, recorded as Sarah (or Saragh) age 38 in 1851 - McGirr Ann daughter age 8 - McGirr Hugh son age 6 - McGirr Peter son age 5 - McGirr Thomas age 4 recorded as 12 in 1851 and absent. - McGirr Mary daughter age 2, absent in 1841 and in 1851 - McGirr Patrick son age 1 - McGirr Sally daughte5r age 0, 8 in 1851 - McGirr Catherine daughter age 0, 6 in 1851 - McGirr Rosy daughter age 0, 4 in 1851 I then looked up the same families in the 1901 census of Ireland the 1st complete census available. • Kilgreen Upper o Terrance McGirr head, age 69, read and write, farmer born Tyrone (b~1830) - Margaret Hackett niece age 27, read and write, housekeeper born Co Tyrone o Charles McGirr head, age 79, remand and write not married (b~1822) - Isabella McGirr sister in law, widow, age 49, read and write - Mary Ann McGirr neice age 24, not married, read and write - Kate McGirr, neice, age 22, not married, read and write - Peter McGirr nephew, age 20, farmer, unmarried, read and write - Henry McGirr, nephew age 18, scholar, read and write - Bella McGirr, neice age 16, scholar, read and write - Michael McGirr, nephew, age 13, scholar, read and write - Susan McGirr, neice, age 11, scholar read and write - Eddy McGirr, neice, age 9, scholar read and write - Ellen McGirr, neice, age 7, scholar read and write - Patrick McGirr, nephew, age 5, scholar read and write - Isabella McGirr is a widow living with her family in the home of her husband’s brother, Charles. You will notice many references to Clogher. The district was and still is known as Clogher and the Parishes are within this district. The McGirr families were most often found within the townlands of Kilgreen and Glencuil pronounced (Glenco). The family went on to become prominent in business and owned a general store and public house in Ballygawley in the late 1800’s and into the early 1900’s. Most of the McGirr papers are in relation to this business and give very little actual family detail. Another problem was that the McGirrs in general seemed to prefer to die intestate without living wills. I have managed to locate a map of the home of James McGirr of Kilgreen which I enclose. In order to definitely identify your James McGirr as being of the Kilgreen McGirrs it would be necessary to know the name of Jame’s father, but I have a gut feeling that your ancestor and these Clogher McGirrs are one in the same. Without more information it will be difficult to substantiate this. James was not a common Christian name within McGirr families and I found it used only in South Tyrone. When Bridget McGirr bought the family farm from her landlord (Verner) her son was named as James McGirr of Glencuil, Ballygawley. Bridget McGirr of Glencuil was aunt to Francis McGirr of Kilgreen so we can see the relationship between these two families.
