This Indenture made this fifteenth day of September in the year Eighteen Hundred and ten Between William Bruce late Collector of Allegany County in the State of Maryland of the One part and Thomas Reid of the same County and State of the Other part Witnesseth. Whereas in virtue of an Act of the General Assembly of Maryland entitled “An Act for the more effectual Collection of the County Charges in Allegany County” passed at November Session Seventeen hundred and ninety six, and a Supplement thereto passed at November Session Seventeen hundred and ninety nine ad a further Supplement thereto passed at November Session Eighteen hundred, six Lots Number 2225, 2226, 2227, and 2228 of the Lands Westward of Fort Cumberland in Allegany County became Chargeable as the property of Thomas Gist for the payment of the Sum of Twenty three Cents for the County County charges for the year Eighteen hundred and eight. And the Collector for the County aforesaid not finding any personal property in the said County liable for or chargeable and the payment of the same. The said Collector did afterward to wit on the third day of March in the year Eighteen hundred and nine, return to the Commissioners of the Tax for the County aforesaid the said Lotts Number 2225, 2226, 2227and 2228 with the amount of the tax thereon due together with the name of Thomas Gist as chargeable for the payment of the same. Whereupon the Commissioners for the tax for the County aforesaid, causes an advertisement, giving the names of persons owning, and for whom taxes are claimed, to be inserted once a week, for five successive weeks, from the first day of April Eighteen hundred and nine, in the Frederick Town Herald, the Federal Gazzette of Baltimore and the republican Star of Easton, notifying all said persons holding lands in Allegany County, and residing out of said County that unless the County charges due on land held by such persons shall be paid to the Collector of Allegany County or his agent Jeremiah Sullivan of the City of Baltimore within the space of sixty days after the publication of the notice aforesaid is in completed the land so charged as aforesaid or such part thereof as may be necessary to raise the sum due thereon, shall be sold to the Highest bidder for the payment of the same. And whereas the said Sum of Twenty three cents the County of the charges of the County aforesaid, not being paid, at the expiration of the Sixty days after the publication of the notice aforesaid, to wit on the tenth day of July eighteen hundred and nine, the Commisioners of the tax for the County aforesaid at an adjourned meeting on the Eleventh day of July eighteen hundred and nine, did direct the said William Bruce Collector, as aforesaid, after thirty days previous Notice at the Court house door, and at the most public places in the County aforesaid, to sell to the Highest bidder. The said lotts or such part of them as might be necessay to raise the sum due thereon, and when sold, to transfer by Deed of Bargain And Sale to the purchaser thereof. And whereas in Virtue of the Authority aforesaid so as aforesaid given by the Commissioners aforesaid, the said William Bruce Collector, as aforesaid, after thirty days previous notice at the Court house door and other, the most public places in the County, did on the nineteenth day of August in the year eighteen hundred and nine expose to public sale to the highest bidder the aforesaid Lotts Number 2225, 2226, 2227 and 2228, at which said public sale Thomas Reid became the Highest bidder & purchased the same Lotts No. 2225, 2227, and 2228 for the sum of two dollars and fifty Cents, and having paid the purchase money to the said Collector, Kno he the said Thomas Reid is now desirous of obtaining a title to the said premises in Consequence thereof Now This Indenture Witnesseth, that to and in consideration of the premises, and the Sum of One dollar, to the said William Bruce Collector, as aforesaid, hath granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents doth grant, bargain, and sell unto the said Thomas Reid his Heirs and assigns the said lotts number 2225, 2226, 2227 and 2228 of the land Westward of Fort Cumberland aforementioned so as aforesaid exposed to public sale in Virtue of the Authority aforesaid from the Commisioners aforesaid with the appurtenances thereunto belonging or anywise appertaining. To Have And To Hold the same with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Reid his Heirs and assigns, to the only proper use in behalf of him the said Thomas Reid his Heirs and assigns forever. In Testimony whereof the said William Bruce Collector to aforesaid hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first above written. W. Bruce late Coll. (seal) Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of Hanson Brifcoe Thomas Cresap Maryland Allegany County to wit Be it remembered that on the tenth day of September in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and Ten personally appeared before us the Subscribers two of Justices of the Peace in and for Allegany County aforesaid William Bruce late Collector of Allegany County mentioned in the aforegoing Deed or Instrument of Writing,and acknowledged the same in Virtue of the Authority reposed in him by the Commisioners of the tax for said County, to be the right and property of the within named Thomas Reid his Heirs and Assigns forever, according to the true intent and meaning of the same and the acts of assembly in such case made and provided acknowledged before us.
