Cumberland Times, 9/15/1910, p 3. Federal Census 1800 of Allegany County MD. Additional contributions from researchers. "The General Assembly of Maryland in 1777 passed an act giving each soldier, in a call for 2000 men, 50 acres of land, who had served three years. In 1781 another act was passed, reserving all the vacant lands in the State westward of "Fort Cumberland" for the soldiers. In pursuance of these enactments, in 1787 Francis Dicken and his ten assistants laid off 4,165 50-acre lots. The commissioned officers were awarded each four 50-acre lots of land; the private soldiers received only one lot. The records show that 212 officers were awarded four lots each under the laws, 848 lots in all." [Note: While transcribing these lists, many names sounded familiar. So, I checked the pages of the 1800 census I had at home and found over 100 possible matches. These have been included in the second column. The notes usually indicate spelling differences. Only 209 of the 212 officers awarded land are included in the newspaper article. Overall, 507 soldiers and squatters living on the military lots at the time of Francis Dicken's survey are listed. One point of interest, very few officers appear to have settled in Allegany Co. Names included without a rank, may be either soldiers or squatters.] ~ A ~ Name 1800 Census Notes Able, Anthony - Adams, Col Peter - Adams, Ralph - Adams, Lt William - Anderson, Maj Archibald - Anderson, George - Anderson, Capt Richard - Armstrong, Capt George - Armstrong, Capt James - Arnold, Anthony 23 - Wills Town Arnold, Jno - Of John Arnold, Jno - Of A Ashby, William 45 - Glades Ayres, Moses, Sr 33 - George's Creek Ayres, Moses, Jr - ~ B ~ Name 1800 Census Notes Bagus, Lt Jacques - Baker, Lt Henry - Baker, Thomas 41 - Sandy Creek Baldwin, Lt Henry - Ball, Matthew - Baltzell, Capt Charles - Barcus, George - Barcus, Thomas 25 - Wills Town Barnes, William 29 - George's Creek Barrell, Samuel - Beall, Jacob - Beall, John - Beall, Capt Lloyd - Beall, Lt Samuel B - Beall, Maj William D - Beatty, Lt Thomas - Beatty, Capt William - Beehman, John - Bell, Capt Jno S - Benson, Capt Perry - Bird, Capt Richard - Blair, John - Bonham, Amariah - Bonham, Josiah - Bonham, Lt Michael - Bonham, Peter - Boyd, Robert - Boyd, Lt Thomas - Boyer, Capt Michael - Boyles, Charles - Brady, Benjamin 27 - George's Creek Bray, Frederick - Bray, Philip 45 - Glades Brevett, Lt John - Brice, Capt Jacob - Briefly, John - Briggs, Ben J - Brindige, John - Britain, Lt Joseph - Brooks, Maj Benjamin - Brown, Maj William - Bruce, Andrew 23 - Wills Town Bruce, Norman - Bruce, Capt William - Bruff, Capt James - Brumsteader, Miller - Buckholder, John - Bumm, Michael - Bunham, Micajah - Burgess, Lt Basil - Burgess, Capt Joseph - Burgess, Lt Joshua - Burgett, Frederick - Burns, Patrick - ~ C ~ Name 1800 Census Notes Carey, Lt John - Carson, Lt John - Castile, Capt John - Chapman, Lt Henry - Chevis, Lt John - Claget, Capt Horatio - Clark, Elle 31 - George's Creek Eben Clements, Lt Henry - Cockey, Ensign Peter - Codington, Benjamin 41 - Sandy Creek Codington, William 43 - Glades Coleman, Conrad - Compton, Lt Edward - Conn, Michael - Corbus, Godfrey 29 - George's Creek Cordray, Thomas 37 - Upper Old Town Corey, Nathan - Crawford, Lt Jacob - Crawl, Peter 25 - Wills Town Crowe ? He would not have been eligible for bounty land. Instead, Deakins found George Fazenbaker already settled in western Maryland when Deakins did his survey in 1787, and George then bought the land on which he was squatted. ========================================================================= LEE - from Edie Chaney Dudley Lee (not in list from Cumberland Times) was a Revolutionary War soldier who was granted military lot #301 in Allegany County. He sold the lot to James Reed of Frederick County Md on Oct 20 1791, Deed Book B p 422 Allegany Co courthouse. Dudley Lee did not live on his military lot but on the White farm in southern Garrett Co near Backbone Mountain. Dudley Lee is listed in the 1800 and 1810 census of Allegany Co. census. ========================================================================= PARKER - from Pat Hook A Lt. Aaron Parker and Pvt. Robert Parker are listed with Capt. Coulson in the Skipton Company 1776. Robert Parker is listed on Allegany Co. Courthouse Land Deeds Page as selling his Lot #3350 to Benjamin, Nancy & Mary Parker in 1792. PARKER - from Walt Warnick According to "Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County" page 475, "Among the earliest settlers on the [Braddock] road was Aaron Parker, who built his log cabin at the old Bear Camp, probably about the same time the Friend brothers settled on the Youghiogheny." The Bear Camp was the location of an earlier encampment of Braddock's army. It was located west of Keyser's Ridge in what is now Garrett County. This place is perhaps 40 miles west of Cumberland. Hoye continues, "Parker had a house at the Bear Camp in 1774, as proved by references to it in two land surveys of that year, the only references to this pioneer in Garrett County history; he never owned the land upon which he 'squatted.'" Hoye implies that Parker was a hunter who wanted to do a little inn keeping on the side. ========================================================================= RYAN - from Connie Beachy John Ryan - he lived on his 50 acres long enough to have it forever bear his name...Ryan's Glade. This is in Garrett County near the Potomac river. ========================================================================= SHAW - from Carol Askey William Shaw sold the military lot he received for his service during the Revolutionary War and settled along George's Creek in the area where the town of Barton is today. William's son William Jr, founded the town and named it after his father's birthplace, Barton-on-Humber, England. ========================================================================= SIMKINS - Susan Sorge Rich Hill being the settlers lots which was patented to John Simkins on the fifth of April 1795, was conveyed to John Baker and then to Nicholas Musser. The settlers lots included were 2793, 2794, 2795, each containing fifty acres. Lot 2792 was conveyed directly to Nicholas Musser on the ninth of April 1804, it being one of five lots awarded as settlers lots of the lands westward of Fort Cumberland. ========================================================================= SMALLWOOD - from Connie Beachy Maj. General Wm. Smallwood - rec'd 4 50 acre parcels and an agent sold them to Peter Lohr. Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bittinger, Md. (my church) sits on part of Smallwood's land. ========================================================================= WARNICK - from Walt Warnick Joseph Warnick, a near neighbor of George Fazenbaker was squatted on land when Deakins did his survey. Warnick proceeded to purchase his land. I could not find any record that Joseph Warnick was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. ========================================================================= WITT - from Merikay Mestad John Witt owned part of Rich Hills (according to the deed) in the early 1800s.
