November 13, 1907 Hugh Beard of Barton, has enlisted in the United States army. He "took a blanket" at the recruiting office in Cumberland, and Sergeant-Major Edward Peacock read the articles of war to him and told him tht the only unpleasant thing about a soldier's life at present is that the soldiers are compelled to eat their pie cold, but Sergeant Peacock assured the "rookie" that a bill would be passed at the next session of Congress that would give the soldiers hot pie.
