Mrs. Berkenbaugh was not advised of the intentions of the younger folks and the affair as a complete surprise to her when her children here and from out of town began to call on her. Mr. Leopold Berkenbaugh and Miss Sarah Rowan were married at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, Cumberland, on September 20, 1863, and the fiftieth anniversary really occurred on Saturday; but Sunday being the most suitable for the little celebration it was held day later. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Berkenbaugh themselves the following daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren were present, the only son, Mr. Patrick Berkenbaugh, being in Detroit. Mich., and unable to get here: Mrs. Katherine Ryan and son, Aloysius, daughter and grandson; Miss Florence McDonough, grand daughter; Mrs. John McDonough, husband and family, Irvin, Edgar and Charles, daughter, son-in-law; Miss Nellie Berkenbaug, daughter, of Lonaconing, and Mr. and Mrs. George Myers and Miss Nora Geary, Miss Nellie's intimate friends, also of Lonaconing. Congratulations were extended to the happy couple and many interesting incidents were recalled, the afternoon passing pleasantly. In the evening a splendid dinner was served and the remainder of the evening was spent in social intercourse This file is located at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/allegany/newspapers/berkenbaugh-l.txt
