It appears that the use of local correspondants has not yet been popular as it was in later years.] ----------------------- ARNOLD 24 Jun 1891 Miss Bessie Kreigbaum of this city and William Arnold of Mt Savage were married by Rev Father Brennan at the parsonage of St Patrick's Church on Centre Street. BAKER 16 Jan 1891 Yesterday, Mrs Caroline Baker, the relict of the late John Baker, died at her residence 28 Davidson Street, aged 76 years. Born at Hesse Castle, Germany, she and her husband removed to Cumberland in 1840. Her cause of death is attributed to a fall suffered some weeks ago. The funeral is tomorrow from the residence, Rev Borchers officiating and burial in Greenmount Cemetery. BARGER 08 Jun 1891 Mrs Mary Barger, wife of Francis Barger, died at her residence on Wine Street, aged 63 years. Her husband, one daughter and 4 sons survive. The funeral is tomorrow at Kinglsey Church, Rev W E Bird officiating and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. BATHHURST 09 Jun 1891 Mrs S P Bathhurst died at her residence this morning 3 miles out on the Bedford Road after an illness of 3 weeks from the fever. She was formerly Lillie May Brotemarkle. The funeral is from the home tomorrow with burial at the Brotemarkle burying grounds. BEALL 16 Feb 1891 Mrs George A Beall, aged 50 years and 9 months, died last night at her residence on Chestnut Street of consumption and asthma. Her husband, George A Beall is employed by the Cumberland Hydraulic Cement Company and 11 grown children survive. 17 Feb 1891 The funeral of Rosanna Beall, wife of George Beall took place from the Chestnut Street home. Rev Oliver Hendrickson of Union Grove Church conducted services with interment in the Union Grove Cemetery. BERKBILE 09 Nov 1891 Frostburg- Godfrey Berkbile died 8 Nov 1891 of apoplexy, aged 63 years. He was, for a number of years, a ticket agent for the C & P RR and at the time of his death the superintendent of Johnson Planing Mill. He was born 17 Apr 1828 and leaves a wife and 7 children: Mrs Delphia Brown of Eustis FL; Miss Helen Berkbile of Johnstown; Mrs Sue Johnson; Mrs Wash. McCulloh; Miss Bessie Berkbile and Messers, Brad. Berkbile of New Castle Pa and Frank Berkbile of Brookfield MO. The funeral is tomorrow from the residence. BRANT 03 Nov 1891 Walter Brant, 18, a son of Mr Lloyd Brant, died at the home on Bedford Road of consumption on Sunday (1 Nov). The funeral was yesterday from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. BRINKER 13 Jan 1891 John Mathias Brinker died last night at his residence 68 S Mechanic Street. He was born in Hanover Germany on 8 Aug 1822 and came to this city 50 years ago. He was a carpenter until 16 years ago when he was stricken with paralysis. He leaves a widow, 2 sons, and 4 daughters; George Brinker of McKeesport PA; Frank Brinker a mechanic for George's Creek and Cumberland RR round house; and daughters, all Ursuline nuns of Louisville KY: Mary(Sr. Sophia); Agnes (Sr. Mathias); Matilda (Sr. Francis); and Annie (Sr. Ignatius Loyola), The funeral is at SS Peter & Paul and burial in their cemetery. BRINKMAN 24 Feb 1891 Mrs William Brinkman died at her home on Green Ridge near Paw Paw this morning of consumption. Her husband, a B & O RR employee and 2 children survive. Funeral services of the M P Church will be conducted at the house and burial at Green Ridge. BURKEY 13 Mar 1891 Mrs Rose Burkey, aged 47 years, wife of Augustine Burkey of Corrigansville, died today at her home there. She was a daughter of James Mattingly, a well known farmer of this county who died in Feb 1884. She had suffered from asthma for a number of years. She is survived by her husband and 10 children ranging in age from 5 to 22 years of age, 6 girls and 4 boys. The funeral is at St Patrick's Catholic Church with burial in St Patrick's Cemetery. BURRELL 22 Aug 1891 this morning, John Burrell, an inmate of the almshouse, died in his 65th year. No known relatives exist. It is thought that a brother is in the west. Burial tomorrow is in the potters field. CARDER 20 Apr 1891 A dispute of money for several days caused garrett Luteman, 23, a clerk in J W Carder's store at Oldtown to shoot to kill William Foley and W W Carder, son of J W Carder and then cut his throat with a razor and shot himself in the head with a pistol. CHRISTIE 28 Jan 1891 Mrs Annie, wife of W S Christie, died at her residence 4 miles out of this city from a 2 week illness of typhoid fever. She was a daughter of the late Richard L Gross and was 28 years old. She is survived by brothers Boyd A Gross of Pittsburgh and Harry M Gross of Bisswell PA; and a sister, wife of George Lee Wilson of this city, her husband, and 4 small children ages 7 months to 8 years. The funeral is tomorrow from the residence on the Baltimore Pike with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. CLARK 06 Apr 1891 Andrew J Clark died yesterday at his home in Lonaconing after an illness of several weeks. He was born on a farm on Evitts Creek on 18 Aug 1830 and was in the 61st year of life. He married Rebecca Cresap who died in 1876 leaving 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons; who survive their father also; Mr John A Clark-Fairmont; Mrs James Dobbin; George W Clark ; Mamie Clark; and William B Clark all of Lonaconing; and 3 sisters, Mrs James Madore of this city; Mrs Robert McKinley of W Brownsville; Mrs James Steele of Armstrong Co PA. CLARY 10 Mar 1891 Clarence J J Clary, the only son of Capt. J N M and M C Clary, died at his fathers residence on the National Pike six miles from the city yesterday after an illness of several months from a complication of diseases, aged 31 years. He was employed at the Eckhart branch of the C & P RR. The funeral is from the home on Thursday with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. CLITES 15 Aug 1891 Mrs Stephen Clites died at her residence in Hyndman PA yesterday morning. She leaves a husband and 5 children. The body was brought to Cumberland and thence to Centenary Church, 6 miles out on the Bedford Road for the funeral. COLE 02 Jun 1891 Mrs Lydia A Cole, the relict of the late Jonathan Cole of Ohio, died at the residence of her son-in-law, Francis X Millman on Greene Street in her 77th year. She was born at Cooperstown NY on 19 Aug 1814 and was the mother of 5 children, 3 of whom survive; Samuel Baker Cole and Charles Cole of Rock Hill MO; and Sarah A wife of the city councilman Millman. She also has one brother at Willoughby Ohio. The funeral is Thursday from the residence 116 Greene Street with Rev Moffitt of the Presbyterian Church to officiate with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. CONLY 21 Aug 1891 Mr James W Conly, an employee of the Cambria Iron Co, died of heart disease while at work at the mill. He lived at 35 Maryland Avenue and had married the widow Mrs Margaret Long who had died 10 years ago. Surviving children Robert and Charles are of Cumberland. Funeral is tomorrow from the home with Rev W E Bird and burial in Springfield WV. CONNALY 14 Mar 1891 Mr John Connaly of Lonaconing died this morning, aged 60 years from enlargement of the liver. Born in Roscommon Ireland he came to this county in 1870. He leaves a son, P T Connaly and a daughter, Mrs Frank Boyle, both of Lonaconing. He will be buried at Frostburg tomorrow. CONNELL 10 Oct 1891 This morning, Thomas Connell the city councilman died at his residence at 122 Wineow Street in his 45th year. He was born in Ballylanders County Limerick Ireland, came to America in 1862, settled in Pittsburgh working as a baker. In 1870, he married Miss Mary Murray of Pittsburgh and the next year moved to Cumberland and established a grocery and dry goods business. His wife and 10 children are grief stricken. Funeral is Monday from St Patrick's church with burial in the St Patrick's Cemetery. CONWAY 23 Jan 1891 The wife of Mr Peter Conway, aged 40 years, living at Mt Savage, died this morning in bed, a result of heart failure. Her husband who is a conductor on the C&P RR and 8 children survive. COSGROVE 17 Feb 1891 Mrs Theresa Cosgrove, wife of Lawrence Cosgrove, died last night at the home of a son Peter Cosgrove, 135 Maryland Avenue of dropsy. She was a Miss Rutt, born in Boonsboro, Washington County MD on 01 Apr 1810 and she married Mr Cosgrove 55 years ago, coming to the city in 1869. Her husband and 3 children: Mrs Lawrence Seaman and Peter Cosgrove of this city; and Mrs Elizabeth Ziler of Little Orleans MD. Services are at St Patrick's Church and interment in the cemetery associated with the church. CRABTREE 02 Feb 1891 Mr Charles Crabtree died at the residence of his parents yesterday of pneumonia. He was 20 years of age and a photographer for T L Darnell. He lived with his mother and sister on Cecelia Street. His father of Oldtown, died 18 years ago. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. CROSS 12 oct 1891 On Friday (9 Oct), Penelope, the wife of William R Cross, died at Piedmont. She was a sister to W T and J S Jameson and also to Miss Maggie Jameson and Mrs E J Fredlock and was born in Oldtown and in her 54th year. Her husband and 3 grown children survive. The funeral is tomorrow from the Presbyterian Church and burial in Philos Cemetery. CUMBERLAND STAGE 18 Jun 1891 Mr Charles Sanders of this city has purchased from the administrators of the Benjamin Millman estate, the old mail route from Cumberland to Flintstone and Rush. He will also run in conjunction to the mail, a first class passenger stage for the travelers to and from these places. CUNNINGHAM 03 Jun 1891 Miss Mary Cunningham died of typhoid pneumonia on Monday 1 June at her home in Mt Savage. She was to have married next Tuesday to Mr Frank Wehner of Frostburg. The funeral is tomorrow at St Patricks' in Mt Savage. DAVIS 09 Mar 1891 George H Davis died at his home this morning near Flintstone from hemorrhage caused by a piece of oyster shell in his stomach. He was eating oysters 2 weeks ago and swallowed a piece of oyster shell 3/4 inch square causing bleeding which he discharged from his mouth last night. He married a Miss Dicken who survives. Funeral on Wednesday with burial in the IOOF cemetery in Flintstone. DEVORE 09 Nov 1891 Mrs F M Devore died Saturday (07 Nov) at her home in Allegany Grove in her 50th year of age. Before her marriage she was Miss Everstine and a sister of Mr Aden A Everstine of the Elberon Hotel. The funeral is today with Rev A A Williamson of the First Baptist and interment at Rose Hill Cemetery. DICKEN 23 Jun 1891 the remains of Mrs Robert Dicken, who died in 1864, were disinterred from the burying grounds on the Dean farm on the Williams Road yesterday and taken to Patterson's Creek fro re-interment in the family plot. The remains of an infant son, buried in 1870 were also disinterred and interred at Patterson's Creek with those of Mrs Dicken. Mr Tobert Dicken son of Robert Dicken was in charge of the interment. DONNELLY 31 Mar 1891 Mrs Harriett Donnelly , wife of James W Donnelly, died last night at home, 28 N Centre Street of lung trouble. She had been ill for one month. She was 53 years of age and a daughter of Samuel D Ways Sr of this city and had married Mr James W Donnelly on 16 Nov 1858, and now leaves him and 5 children mourning: Charles W; Will C; Harry R; Susie; and Annie. DRENNING 14 May 1891 Anna Maria Drenning died yesterday at the residence of her son on Decatur Street in her 77th year from grippe. She leaves 2 sons and 2 daughters; WH Drenning, grocer of Front Street; James H Drenning of Hampshire County WV; Mrs Louisa Spriggs of Bedford County PA; Mrs Julia Trout of this city. The funeral is tomorrow from the home with Rev A A Williamson of the Baptist Church with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. DUNN 02 Sep 1891 Mrs Elizabeth Dunn of Pekin, died at her residence on Monday (31 Aug) of pysemia following an accident three weeks ago when she stepped on a rusty nail which entered the tender part of her foot and blood poisoning set in. She leaves a husband, 5 sons, and 3 daughters and the funeral is today with burial in Moscow Cemetery. EDWARDS 11 Jul 1891 Maggie, the 14 year old daughter of Mr Owen Edwards, died at her home on Fulton Street yesterday following an illness of 11 weeks from typhoid fever. The funeral is tomorrow from the home 4 Fulton Street with Rev Butts officiating and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. ELLIOTT 21 Mar 1891 Mr John Elliott of Greene Street and formerly of the Cumberland Valley died at the age of 84 years. The funeral will be tomorrow at Bethel Church. FEELY 29 Jan 1891 Miss Bridget Feely died yesterday at the residence of her father at 138 Columbia Street of a complication of diseases superinduced by the grippe. She was about 18 years of age and a daughter of Michael Feely, a well known citizen of Cumberland. The funeral is from the home and then to St Patrick's for a mass and interment in St Patricks Cemetery. FISHER 07 Apr 1891 Mr Christopher Fisher died at home in Frostburg on Sunday (5 Apr) from congestion of the lungs. He was born in Eban Kurfast, Hesse, Germany and was a miner but of late a saloon keeper. He was 51 years, 10 months, and 5 days of age and is survived by a wife, two grown sons and one daughter. FLECKENSTEIN 25 Jul 1891 Yesterday, Mrs Elizabeth Fleckenstein, wife of Jacob F Fleckenstein, died in Connellsville PA in her 67th year. Her husband survives, living in this city for 32 years in the bakery business on N. Mechanic Street. She was the mother of Adam Fleckenstein of this city and of Peter Fleckenstein of Pittsburgh. The remains were brought here and the funeral is at Sts. Peter & Paul, Father Felix presiding and interment in the cemetery connected with the church. FREYER 11 Sep 1891 Edward Freyer, 18 years of age, residing at 128 Fourth Avenue in McKeesport died suddenly yesterday. A former resident, he was subject to fits which was the cause of death. The funeral was at St Patrick's with interment in the cemetery connected with the church. GARLITZ 24 Nov 1891 Basil T Garlitz died at the home of his son Alonzo on S Mechanic Street in the 74th year of life. He had complained of a fluttering of the heart for 2-3 days. Basil Tomlinson Garlitz was born in 1818, 3 miles south of Grantsville MD, a son of Christian Garlitz and Elizabeth Durst and was the youngest of 8 children, all deceased except Jacob and Henry. His father who died in 1846, was quite a hunter and ranked up with Meshack Browning in the forest. In 1860, he was married to Elizabeth Listen. Four of their children, 3 boys and 1 girl now live in Dayton Ohio with their mother. The Garlitz and Custer families were related as the sister of Christian Garlitz married John Custer and who's son Emmanuel Custer was the father of the famous general George Custer. The daughter, Miss Emma and sons Horatio and Herbert of Dayton Ohio have been communicated with for the funeral. The funeral will be by Rev W E Bird of Kingsley ME church and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. [9 paragraph story ] GEPHART 22 Apr 1891 Rev. William Gephart, father of Mrs Levi Shaw and of Mr Templeton Gephart of this city, died at his home in Bedford PA this morning. He had been in bad health for some time. Funeral tomorrow with interment in Bedford Cemetery. GRIMMINGER 03 Nov 1891 Mrs Annie A Grimminger, wife of Samuel Grimminger, died at her residence on Orchard Street in her 32nd year. Her maiden name was Manley. She was the mother of 3 young children. Her husband is employed at McKaig's shafting works. The funeral is tomorrow from St Patrick's Church, Rev Father Stanton officiating and burial in St Patrick's Cemetery. HAMILL 07 Jan 1891 Charles H Hamill Esq. Of Frostburg, died this morning at his residence. He leaves a wife, 2 daughters and 3 sons. He was the superintendent of Frostburg Mining Co and was married to Miss Kate Frost, a daughter of Meshack Frost. The burial is Sunday at St Michael's Cemetery after services in the home. HAMILTON 15 Apr 1891 Miss Agnes Hamilton, 15 year old daughter of Emmanuel & Martha Hamilton, died of typhoid fever in her N Mechanic Street home yesterday. She was ill for three days. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in Piney Grove, about 10 miles east of this city. HARDINGER 07 Sep 1891 John Hardinger died at his home at Cook's Mills in his 28th year. He married a Miss Speelman of this city, who with one child, survives. The cause of death was typhoid fever. The funeral took place today from the residence. HARDINGER 22 Sep 1891 George Hardinger, farmer, died at his home 10 miles north of the city yesterday, aged 38 years. He was married and his children are at present in Michigan. Services are at Centenary Church with Rev Cassen officiating with burial in the cemetery of the church. HENDRICKSON 25 Apr 1891 This morning Oliver P Hendrickson of Hazen, an old and highly esteemed farmer of this county, died at his residence in the 71st year of age. Last week, his barn was burned and in an attempt to save some of the effects, he became overheated and contracted a severe cold. He leaves a wife and 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls. One boy lives at Hagerstown and another at Grafton WV and the others at Hazen. For many years he was engaged in a wool carding business in addition to his hominy mill and fine farm and was considered quite wealthy. The funeral is tomorrow at Union Grove Church with Rev. Long and Rev Mackelfish. [See bio of son Finley C. Hendrickson] HENDRICKSON 27 Jul 1891 Mrs Oliver Hendrickson [Sarah A Folck] died at her residence near Hazen on Saturday (25 Jul) in her 66th year. About 6 months ago her husband died of a severe cold. She had been in a delicate state of health since his death. The funeral was yesterday and burial in the family burying grounds on the Hendrickson farm. HENDRICKSON 29 Jul 1891 Mr Richard Hendrickson, brother of Oliver P Hendrickson who died six months ago and his wife died 2 days ago, died at the residence of Mr Hardman on the Hardman Farm near Hazen early this morning. He was in feeble health and the death of his brother and sister-in-law was a shock from which he never recovered. He was in his 74th year and had been a resident of this county nearly all of his life. The funeral is tomorrow from the Union Church, Rev Long officiating with burial in the Hendrickson family farm burying grounds. HENDRICKSON 10 Sep 1891 William Hendrickson, brother of the late Oliver Hendrickson, died yesterday at his farm house, 8 miles east of the city, in his 77th year of age. He leaves a wife and 8 children, all of them grown. The funeral is tomorrow from Union Church. 11 Sep 1891 Flintstone- The funeral of William Hendrickson took place this afternoon at the Union Church near Smouse's Mills preached by Rev Mr Shriver of the Flintstone M E Church. He and two brothers, Oliver and Richard, passed away in the past 3 months, all beyond 70 years of age, with William Hendrickson aged 76 years. HERRING 02 May 1891 Yesterday, Mr George herring died at his residence, 77 N Mechanic Street of paralysis, nearly 62 years old. He was born May 12, 1829 in Hesse Darmstadt Kirsh Brombash Germany and came to America quite young, working in Philadelphia as a shoemaker from 1849-1853. In 1852, he married Miss Margaret Krampf and in 1853 came to Cumberland. He also worked in a bakery, for the Old Potomac Coal and Iron Company, and in the saloon business, and finally in 1886, in the bottling business until his death. He had 11 children, 2 of whom still live; Frederick Jr and Mrs Mary Heinze; also, his wife and 2 brothers, Michael of Pittsburgh and Adam of Reading. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church with burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery on Baltimore Avenue. HITE 24 Mar 1891 Miss Mollie Hite, daughter of the late Albert Hite, died of pneumonia this morning at her mother's home on Baltimore Avenue, aged 18 years. Interment is tomorrow at Bethel Church in the Cumberland Valley. HITE 26 Mar 1891 Mr Washington Hite, for years employed as a watchman for the George's Creek and Cumberland RR, died this morning at the residence of son-in- law Hiram Wolfe at 263 N Centre Street. He leaves a large family, among them, Mrs Hiram Wolfe and Milton, John T, and Charles Hite. Death was caused by paralysis. Burial is on the old Hite farm, 3 miles out on Little Valley Road. HOCKING 21 Jan 1891 William Hocking, an old mine engineer and formerly of Allegany County, died yesterday at Piedmont WV after a short illness. He leaves a wife and 7 children; Mrs Samuel Jeffries of Frostburg; Misses Nannie and Jennie Hocking and William Hocking of Westernport; Nicholas B Hocking of Piedmont WV; De Hocking of Mt Savage; and Dr George W Hocking of Baltimore. The funeral is Thursday at Piedmont and the body transported to Frostburg with burial in Allegany Cemetery. HODEL 09 Mar 1891 Mrs Alice Hodel, wife of John Hodel, residing at 281 Maryland Avenue, died this morning of typhoid fever. Before marrying Mr Hodel about 15 years ago, she was a Miss Morgan. Her husband and her 5 children, ranging in age from 2 months to 14 years old, survive. She had been ill since last Wednesday and her oldest daughter is also gravely ill. The funeral is from Sts Peter & Paul with interment in the Sts Peter & Paul Cemetery. HOFFMAN 18 Apr 1891 George A Hoffman died today at his residence of S Liberty Street. After falling down in January, he has been affected by nervous prostration. He was born in this city on 16 Oct 1823 and married Miss Rhoda Thomas of Winchester VA in Jan 1858. He leaves a widow and 3 children: Misses Tillie and Zelea and also Dr Eugene Hoffman of this city. The funeral is from the home with Rev Dr Moffitt and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. HOLZSHU 12 Sep 1891 Charles L Holzshu, a tailor, 55 years of age , died this morning at his residence on Hanover Street. He was born at Danigen (Baden) Germany in 1836, came to this country in 1851, married Miss Margaret Schilling in 1858, and had 8 children, 4 of whom are still living: John Henry; Charles G; and Misses Emma and Eda, all of this city. He also has 3 brothers and 2 sisters still living. His wife is also very ill. The funeral is Monday at the German Lutheran Church with burial in the cemetery connected with the church, with Rev Finkbinder officiating. HOTCHKISS 07 Sep 1891 Dr George E Hotchkiss of Barton was found dead on Saturday (5 Sep) with his head severely fractured and his neck broken along the Potomac narrow gauge which runs up to the mines. He had left Barton to visit a patient near the Potomac narrow gauge, but upon returning, fell down a 8-10 foot bank near the tracks. He leaves a wife. The funeral is at the Presbyterian Church with the father , mother, sisters and brother attending from Linden VA. JAMMER 22 Oct 1891 Annie, wife of Henry Jammer, a tailor employed by C L Holzshu & Sons, died at her home on Hanover Street last night from spinal meningitis. A husband and 2 children, Conrad and a little girl survive. The funeral is Saturday from the German Lutheran Church. JENVEY 02 Jan 1891 Mr George Jenvey of No. 45 Harrison Street, died last night after a stroke 21 days ago. He was born in Kent, England on 21 Jul 1822 and was in his 69th year of his life. He married young and had 4 children before coming to America in 1850, settling in Cincinnati and also living in Marietta OH and Charleston WV before removing to Cumberland in 1879. His wife died 4 years ago. His children total 8, 6 of whom are still living: Rev W R Jenvey of Hoboken NJ; Charles Jenvey of Marietta OH; George Jenvey of Washington DC; Edward Jenvey of Wheeling WV; Mrs J T McDowell of Oil City PA; and Frank Jenvey of Cumberland MD. The funeral is Sunday at Christ Reformed Episcopal Church and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. JUST 02 Feb 1891 Frederick L Just died yesterday at his residence on Columbia Street of paralysis. Born in Hanover, Germany in 1812, he came to this city 40 years ago engaged in the drug business at Baltimore and Mechanic Streets and later, in the insurance business. The remains will be taken to Myersdale for burial. KEAN 28 Aug 1891 Mrs Anthony Kean died last night at her home on Greene Street in her 72nd year. She was born in Grantsville where she has two maiden sisters living; Misses Belle and Rebecca Ridgeley. She was the daughter of Eli Ridgeley, whose family covers 6 generations of Garrett County history. She leaves a son by her former husband, Dr Henry L Bevans of Grantsville and a sister, Mrs Julia Hilleary of this city. She had been ill for 10 years from malaria. The funeral is tomorrow at Sts. Peter & Paul with interment in the cemetery connected with the church. KILMER 30 Sep 1891 Mr William Kilmer died this morning at his residence on Centre Street in his 79th year from heart failure. He was born in Baltimore in 1804 and was once a police detective there before moving to Cumberland after the war. He leaves 3 children, 2 daughters of this city, and 1 son in Ohio. The funeral is Friday from the home 141 N Centre Street with Rev Richard Norris presiding and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. KIMMEL 29 Sep 1891 Mrs Peter Kimmel, aged 57 years, wife of ex-councilman Kimmel, died at her home on the Combs farm near Mt Savage on Saturday (26 Sep). Mrs Kimmel was a Miss Brant before marriage and spent the greater part of her life near Mt Savage. She had been ill for several months and was operated upon lately for a tumor. She was buried yesterday at Mt Savage Cemetery, Rev John W Nott of the St George Episcopal Church officiating. KNOEPP 29 Jan 1891 Mr Christopher Knoepp, an old and respected citizen of Cumberland, died this morning of old age at his residence on Knox Street. He was born in Rachstadt Germany in 1815 and was 75 years of age. He came to America 40 years ago settling in Pennsylvania and 5 years later he came to Cumberland engaging in carpentry and as a wheelwright. His wife died several years ago. Two daughters survive; the wife of Peter Knepp and wife of George H Zink. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church and interment in the cemetery associated with the church. KOEGEL 11 Jul 1891 Mrs Elizabeth Koegel died this morning 19 Highland Street of a paralytic stroke, aged 69 years. She married John Koegel in 1842 and 6 children survive and also one sister, Mrs Bell of Grantsville. The funeral is tomorrow form Highland Street, Rev Borches from the Zion German Lutheran Church and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery. LAFFERTY 11 Sep 1891 Michael Lafferty, for many years the keeper of the "Black Horse Tavern" in the Narrows, died at the home of his brother on Wednesday (9 Sep) on N Centre Street in the 78th year of his life. The funeral was at Sts. Peter & Paul with interment in the cemetery connected with the church. LAING 03 Aug 1891 Mr Joseph Laing died at his home yesterday at Mapleside of inflamation of the stomach. Mr Laing was born in 1806 in the Duchy of Oldenburg Germany and came to this country about 30 years later. He leaves 5 children; 3 sons, F X Laing; John Laing, and Joseph Laing; 2 daughters, Kate at Mt Pleasant and Mary of St Clair WV; and also 1 brother, Francis Laing a grocer of Mechanics St. Services at Sts. Peter & Paul and burial in the German Catholic Cemetery. LEANY 07 Feb 1891 Mr David Leany died at the residence of his mother at 69 Decatur Street this morning of typhoid fever. He was in his 29th year of age and was born in Centreville PA and moved to this city 10 years ago, working first in dry goods business and later for the WV Central RR as an auditor of freight receipts. Last September, he married Miss Fannie Brown, a daughter of Jacob Brown, who, with the mother, 4 sisters, and 1 brother, survives. LeFEVRE 04 May 1891 Yesterday morning, Mrs Rebecca LeFevre, the mother of Dr LeFevre, the druggist and the widow of the late Henry LeFevre, died at the residence of her son on Washington Street, aged 83 years. LEGEER 15 Jun 1891 Mr Jacob Legeer, a miner aged 50 years, was instantly killed working in the Hoffman mines today by a fall of roof coal. He leaves a wife, 3 boys, and 2 girls who reside at Vale Summitt. MAGUIRE 26 Sep 1891 Mrs Jane Maguire, wife of Thomas Maguire deceased, died this morning at her home on Frederick Street in her 75th year. She leaves a daughter Miss Maggie of this city. JORDAN 02 Apr 1891 Mrs Catherine Jordan, wife of J W Jordan, died last evening at her home at Polk and Columbia Streets, aged 77 years. MATTINGLY 06 Apr 1891 Sylvester Mattingly, the last of 8 brothers of long living, died yesterday at his home in Mt Savage in his 71st year of life. He leaves a wife, 4 sons, 5 daughters; 2 of whom are Sisters of Charity, another is married and lives in Garrett Co, and another the wife of Thomas Carney of Mt Savage and another unmarried at home. One of the sons are Rev father Mattingly of Oakland MD. The funeral is tomorrow at St patrick's Church in Mt Savage. MAY 11 Aug 1891 News has been received that Mr Jacob May, a well known farmer of Bedford County PA 8 miles south of Bedford PA, died his burning home with all of its contents. Mr May was subject to fits and was with a lantern in his home when overcome by a fit and the lantern fell to the floor and exploded and the home burned. MAY 11 Mar 1891 Beulah, daughter of William May, died at the home of Mrs Fochtman on the Oldtown Road this morning from consumption. She is about 20 years of age and was employed in Washington from where she returned in November past where she was taken to Mrs Fochtman's to live with her sister Nora. The funeral is tomorrow from the home of Mr Charles Cox on Decatur Street. McCLELLAN 07 Feb 1891 Mrs Elizabeth McClellan, aged 70, died at the residence of her son, W C Sliger at Centreville, Bedford Co PA on Thursday (5 Feb). Her father is currently farming in S Dakota. The funeral is from the Fellowship M P Church, Rev E O Ewing, officiating. McELFISH 14 Dec 1891 Edward McElfish, 63, died Saturday (12 Dec) at the Sylvan Retreat. He leaves quite a number of relatives. He had been committed as a lunatic and had died from cancer of the face. McKEE 14 Sep 1891 Mrs Adeline McKee, a relict of James A McKee who was killed on the B & O railway , died at her residence today 114 Frederick street in her 49th year from consumption after suffering for a few years. One son, James , a clerk in the John A McKee hardware store and one sister, Mrs Jacob George survive. Funeral services from the home on Frederick Street with Rev Fishbiner. McMILLAN 26 Aug 1891 Mr William McMillan Sr, the father of ex-sheriff Arch McMillan, died at his home at Borden Shaft last evening, aged 69 years of age. He was well known throughout the county. McNAMARA 26 Jan 1891 Daniel McNamara died Saturday (24 Jan) at his residence on Maryland Avenue in his 72nd year. He was born in County Claire, Ireland in Aug 1819. He was once a watchman for the C & O Canal at the basin wharf. Three sons, John and James of PA and Edward of this city; and 2 daughters, Mrs Mary Moley of Butler Co. PA and Miss Ellen McNamara of this city all survive. The funeral is from St Patrick's today. MILLER 09 Feb 1891 George W Miller, a farmer on Little Valley Road, 15 miles east, died Saturday last (7 Feb) of inflamation of the bowels. He was 39 years of age and leaves a widow and 6 children. MILLISON 18 May 1891 Saturday 16 May 1891, Benjamin M Millison died at his home on Paca Street of typhoid fever, aged 39 years. He was born in Higginsville WV, locating here in 1878 engaging in the sale of horses and mules. He married Miss Euphemia Young, the daughter of James Young and has one child, Ernest in his 13th year. Mrs Millison is prostrate with the grippe. The funeral is today from the residence with Rev Dr Moffitt of the First Presbyterian Church with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. MILLISON 20 May 1891 Mrs Euphemia Millison, wife of the late Benjamin Millison, died today in her 42nd year of life. She was the daughter of boat builder John Young and was married 14 years ago. Her final will was to see that her son Ernest, 13 years of age is placed with his aunt Mrs William Young. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. MILLMAN 06 May 1891 Mrs Mary A Millman, the mother of City Councilman F X Millman and Mrs John F Rose and Mrs J B Slattery, died yesterday at her home on Bedford Road in her 79th year. She was born at Bellma on Aug 15, 1812, came to America in 1842, residing in this city for 40 years. Her husband is feeble and is 85 years old. The funeral is from the home today with services at Sts Peter & Paul with burial in the SSPP Cemetery. MINNICHS 29 Aug 1891 Tolbert Minnichs, killed by the falling of the Cumberland Street bridge on Thursday (28Aug), was buried today at Rose Hill Cemetery following services at the home on German Street by Rev Finkbinder. MORGART 09 Nov 1891 Miss Minerva L Morgart, daughter of Peter Morgart of Davidson Street and Mr George Spedden of Baltimore will be married tomorrow evening at the bride's home 13 Decatur Street. MORRIS 22 May 1891 This morning, Mr John Morris, the brother of R I Morris of this city, died of heart failure while at work in the carpenter shop of the B & O roundhouse. He leaves a wife and 4 children; Grant and Wilson Morris of this city; Charley of Mt Savage; and Mrs Maggie Lintz of Baltimore. (2 columns article). 02 Feb 1891 George D Mountz sentenced to 5 years in the penitentiary. MULLEN 07 Sep 1891 John G Mullen of Valley Street died Saturday (5 Sep) aged 54 years of age. He had been a member of the city council; served on the police force; and acted as the constable. He was twice married, his first wife Miss Mattingly who bore him two children and has since died. In 1868, he married Miss Catherine Petrie, who survives and they had 10 children. He also leaves 3 sisters who are Sisters of Charity at Mt Hope and a sister in St Louis, and a brother, W T Mullen on Little Valley road near the city. The funeral is at Sts. Peter & Paul with Rev Father Felix officiating. NARROWS PARK 22 Apr 1891 Cumberland will have a park erected on the Seiss property in the Narrows about 2 miles from the city and will be known as Narrows Park. An immense pavilion, a trout lake and all types of amusements will be constructed. It will be ready by may 1892 and will be the site for concerts. NAUGHTON 06 Apr 1891 Mr M Naughton Jr died last night at his father's home 4 miles east near Folkes Mills on the National Pike in his 22nd year. He suffered for a long time with brain fever. (Article of funeral in 09 Apr edition) NOEL 09 Jun 1891 Mrs Julia noel, wife of James Noel, the superintendent of the Holbitzell fire-clay mines, died at her home at Williams Station Sunday (7 Jun) following a lingering illness. The funeral is from the Frostburg M E Church today. ORR 22 May 1891 Mrs Alexander Orr died yesterday at her residence in Lonaconing. Mr Orr is well known in this city. Mrs Orr was the daughter of John Wesley Green and was 33 years, 6 months, and 19 days of age. The funeral is today with rev J P Wilson and burial is in the Old Lonaconing Cemetery. OSTER 27 Apr 1891 William Henry Oster, 17, son of Simon Oster, a well to do farmer of Flintstone, met with a distressing accident which resulted in his death. He worked at the tannery of J K and G B White in Hyndman and came to Cumberland with some companions to take in the town after payday on Friday. At 9:15 the party boarded a freight train, but a sudden jar and Oster fell off and was dragged along the tracks for about 30 yards. He was given medical assistance at the Queen City Hotel by Dr Garr, but died Sunday morning (Apr 26). The remains will be taken to Flintstone for funeral and burial. OTT 17 Jun 1891 Josiah Ott, an old and respected citizen of Bedford Co, PA, died last Monday (15 Jun) at his home near Bedford Pa. He was well known in this area. The funeral took place this morning from the residence. PAW PAW TUNNEL 29 Sep 1891 The Paw Paw tunnel is being widened on the B & O Railroad to alleviate the smoke, heat, and cinders for employees and passengers and to accommodate the new Pullman cars on the sharp curve due to their length. This will take place with the next 8 months with Italian laborers. POLLOCK 16 Nov 1891 Mrs Robert Pollock died Saturday (14 Nov) at the residence near North Branch from a complication of diseases. She was a daughter of Mr Grace of Springfield WV and was married 6 years ago to Robert S Pollock. She was the mother of 3 children, 2 of whom survive. The funeral was yesterday from the home with interment at the family burying ground on the farm. Rev J E Moffatt of the First Presbyterian church presided. ROBERTS 07 Sep 1891 George Gibson Roberts died Saturday (5 Sep) at the residence of his brother W Milnor Roberts on Decatur Street of dysentery, aged 46 years. His parents are deceased and he has 4 brothers and one sister; W Milnor Roberts and J B G Roberts, both of this city; Thomas P Roberts and Robert A Roberts of Pittsburgh; and Mrs Yates of Carlisle PA., the relict of Captain Yates of Indian fighting fame. He was a civil engineer and the body was taken to Carlisle for funeral tomorrow evening. ROBINETTE 29 Apr 1891 This morning, Mrs Sarah Robinette, the mother of Dan Robinette, a carpenter at the Windsor Hotel and of Jacob Robinette, a printer of this city, died at the alms house of advanced age. The funeral is tomorrow with burial in the grave yard connected to the institution until arrangements can be made for the removal to Fairview Cemetery near Flintstone. ROBINETTE 06 May 1891 Marriage in Harpers Ferry of Miss Nellie Robinette, the daughter of Daniel M Robinette of this city and Mr Lewis H Beck on April 14, by Rev James M Stephenson. They will make Chicago their home. SAYLOR 22 Apr 1891 News of the death of Mr Edward Saylor at his home in Decatur IL has reached here. He was well known in this city having been born and raised here. He is the son of Mrs Anna Saylor of Centre Street and a nephew of Mrs William R McCulley and Mrs A J Watson, both of this city. The cause of death is consumption. He was 27 years old and leaves a wife and 2 children. SCOTT 20 Apr 1891 Mr Archer Scott died yesterday at his residence on Madison Street in his 71st year. A bricklayer by trade, he had been ill for some time with asthma. A wife, one son, and one daughter, - all of this city, survive him. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. SLIGER 12 Sep 1891 Yesterday, Mr Frederick Sliger, aged 80 years, died at his home in Cumberland valley of dropsy. He leaves 1 son and 5 daughters, all grown. SLOAN 24 Aug 1891 John N Sloan died yesterday at the home of his mother Mrs Anne Sloan in Lonaconing in his 36th year from consumption. Born in Lonaconing on 18 Aug 1856, he was schooled at Dickinson Seminary and at the school at Valparaiso IN, where he located after marrying Miss Lucy G Fiske, daughter of Mrs Daga Fiske on 28 Feb 1882. He moved back to Lonaconing to improve his health last February. He leaves brothers, David, James M, and Duncan R Sloan. The funeral is tomorrow with burial in Allegany Cemetery, Frostburg. SMITH 05 Nov 1891 Miss Maggie Smith the daughter of William Smith, died at her residence on German Street last night of diphtheria, aged 16 years. SPRIGG 25 Jun 1891 William O Sprigg died yesterday afternoon at the residence of his brother James C Sprigg of Washington DC, aged 75 years. He was born in Cumberland 28 Jun 1816, the son of Michael O Sprigg and Mary Sprigg, nee Lamar. His father was a grandson of Michael Cresap and his mother was a daughter of revolutionary hero Colonel Lamar, owner of vast estates in the Evitts Creek Valley. He was twice married; first to Miss Sarah Sargeant Van Lear by whom one son, Lamar who lives in Texas was born. In 1843 his wife died and in 1848, he married Miss Jeanette Hazelhurst, a sister of Henry Hazelhurst Esq. and a sister-in-law of Hon. Benjamin H Latrobe. Children of this marriage are; Carol of NY; Tilghman, Hazelhurst, Maria, and Jeanette of this city, and Allden of Pittsburgh. His wife died many years ago. Two sisters and one brother also survive; Mrs Leiper Patterson and Mrs Sarah H Long of this city; and Mr James C Sprigg of Washington DC. STEGMIER 27 Apr 1891 Miss Mary Stegmier, aged 22 years, died of pneumonia at the farm house of her father, Mr Leonard Stegmier, a dairyman on the Baltimore Pike. STEINER 28 Sep 1891 Mrs Joseph Steiner, the mother of Nettie and Hattie Steiner, died and the funeral was yesterday from the residence on Mechanic Street with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. She was born in County Caren, Ireland 75 years ago and came to this country 38 years ago. STIEHL 17 Jan 1891 Mrs Laura Stiehl, wife of Henry Stiehl, died at the prevailing fever at her home yesterday evening. She was a Miss Huppart of Braddock PA where she was born on 28 Aug 1842. She leaves a husband and 8 children. The funeral is from Zion Reformed Church on Liberty Street, Rev Borchers officiating and interment in Greenmount Cemetery on th Baltimore Pike. STORER 19 Oct 1891 Mr James Storer died at his residence on Vinegar Lane in his 62nd year. He was befallen by a stroke some time ago and did not fully recover. SULLIVAN 22 Jun 1891 Mrs Catherine Sullivan, wife of the late James Sullivan, died at her residence this morning in her 86th year. Mrs Sullivan was born in a log house on the same spot where her present home is situated on Mechanic Street. Her great-grandfather and 5 brothers settled here and opened the first store outside of Baltimore (Fishers store established by James and Frederick Sullivan) She married James Sullivan but had no children. Mr Sullivan was a widow and had several children: Miss Ellen, the only survivor who nursed and cared for them. TERRELL 16 Mar 1891 James H Terrell died yesterday morning at the residence of R H Arnold of Oldtown Road from general debility, aged 76 years of age. He had been a resident of the county near North Branch for many years. He leaves 5 daughters; Mrs William Wineow; Mrs R H Arnold; Mrs Solomon Hensell; Mrs Valentine Holsinger all of this city; and Mrs Mary A Leiter of Chicago. THOMPSON 14 Sep 1891 Adam Thompson, Lonaconing, died on Friday last (11 Sep) of pneumonia. He was born in Glasgow Scotland in 1835, and came to this country in 1852, first locating in Eckhart and moving to Lonaconing in 1856 where he worked as a miner and later as a watchman for the Koontz Mines. In 1882-3, he was the 4th district tax collector. His wife, 3 sons and 9 daughters survive. Members of the IOOF lodge escorted the body from the home to their hall and thence to the cemetery, where Rev L Carmon Bell and Mr Abbbott of the IOOF conducted services. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Lonaconing. TWIGG 05 Jun 1891 Last night, C Bentley Twigg was married to Miss Sophia Loar at the bride's home on Bedford Street, Rev J W Finkbinder officiating. TWIGG 11 Mar 1891 Flintstone- Mrs Twigg, wife of Frank Twigg, living at Flintstone Creek, was buried today on Warrior Mountain. This is the woman who with several young children, was taken to the Alms House from Warrior mountain a year since. The family is still in dire circumstances, the husband being quite ill and 2 of the children are helpless cripples. The neighbors have kept them from starving thus far but sending them anything would be a charitable act for this unfortunate family. WATTS 31 Mar 1891 Biographical article of George W Watts of Cumberland, whose father was in partnership with William R Beall in a business on Baltimore Street, is a partner in the cigarette and tobacco business with W Dukes & Sons in Durham NC, moving there in 1878. WAYS 16 Mar 1891 On Saturday (14 Mar) Mrs Sallie Ways, wife of S D Ways Jr, who had been suffering from cerebral meningitis for 8 weeks, was relieved of her suffering by death. She was born 13 May 1846 a daughter of Peter and Amelia Smith and married Mr Ways on 30 Aug 1866. Her husband, 3 sons, 3 daughters, a mother, a father, 4 sisters, and 1 brother survive. WEISKETTEL 19 Aug 1891 Mrs Louisa Weiskettel died at her residence, 67 Decatur Street, after a short illness. She was in her 79th year. WELSBROD 14 Feb 1891 Mr J A Welsbrod, a salesman for the R D Johnson Milling Co, died today at his residence on Harrison Street of typhoid fever. A native of Germany, he came to this country in 1877, located in Michigan and moved to this city in 1885. He was married with 4 children. WELSH 07 Sep 1891 Saturday afternoon, Mrs Rebecca Welsh, wife of John Welsh, died at her residence near Rawlings, aged 75 years. The funeral is today with burial in the family burying grounds at Rawlings. WERTZ 24 Jan 1891 Valentine B Wertz, a prominent resident of Harrison township, Bedford County PA, was found dead Friday (23 Jan) in his barnyard of a stroke of apoplexy. He was well advanced in years. The two daughters living with him found him in the barnyard. WHITE 15 Jun 1891 Thomas V White died yesterday at his residence on N Centre Street of chronic dysentery in his 65th year. WICKARD 16 Mar 1891 William Wickard died yesterday at the residence of George Powell at George & Union Streets from cancer of the chest. He was born in Cumberland and lived here all his life. He was twice married; his first wife dying 18 years ago, and he is survived by his 2nd wife and 5 children from the first marriage. Sons, Samuel of this city and Thomas of McKeesport; and daughters, Mrs Harry Button of this city; Mrs B F Johnson of Baltimore and Mrs Samuel Brotemarkle of Kansas City MO. He was well known as an auctioneer and was once a constable and a bailiff of the Allegany County Circuit Court. The funeral services are at the Centre Street M E Church with interment in the cemetery of the church. WIGFIELD 01 Jun 1891 John Wigfield, an old soldier who took part in many cavalry engagements during the war, was laid to rest on Saturday (29 May) in the Twigg graveyard near his home. His death occurred Friday near Town Creek. A wife and 7 children survive. William A Hamilton, by special request, conducted the services. WILGER 11 Mar 1891 Mrs Lydia M Wilger, wife of Lemuel Wilger, an engineer of the Pennsylvania RR, died at Ellerslie today of typhoid fever in her 34 th year. ZACHARIAS 03 Feb 1891 Mrs Ellen T Zacharias, the wife of Edwin D Zacharias, died this morning at her residence 142 N Mechanic Street of inflamation of the brain. She was the daughter of a well known farmer of Cumberland Valley, Samuel Elliott. She was married in 1888 and has lived in this city ever since then.
