ANDREWS 10 Jul 1896 Mrs Joseph Andrews, formerly of Barton but now of Macon City, MO, is paying a visit to her sister-in-law, Mrs John W Young on Greene Street. This is Mrs Andrew's first visit to her native county for 17 years. She will leave for home on July 30. ANDREWS 15 Jul 1896 Mr William H Andrews of Barton and Miss Carrie Michael of Firm Rock were married at the residence of Mr Samuel Young on Water Street by Rev Louis Randall. Mr & Mrs Andrews will leave for Barton, at which place they will make their future home. (3 paragraphs) ANSEL 20 Aug 1896 Henry Ansel died last night at the home of John W Growden of Evitts PA in the Cumberland Valley. For some time now, Mr Ansel had been living in a bachelor house near Mr Growden's. He leaves 3 grown sons, William of Ellerslie; and Charles and Woodward. His wife died some years ago. Burial in bald Hill Cemetery near Hazen. He was 62 years of age. ATKINSON 22 Aug 1896 Mrs Rebecca Atkinson died last night at the home of her son in law, Mr I Z Hamilton on Fayette Street. The deceased was in her 67th year and was ill but not considered serious at first but grew worse at the end. Her son, Walter Atkinson died three months ago and she never recovered from this shock. Her husband, John Atkinson a prominent Philadelphian, has been deceased for 30 years. Mrs Atkinson came here to live only two months ago. Surviving children are Mr C L Atkinson of Detroit MI and Mrs I Z Hamilton of this city. The remains are to be taken to Philadelphia for burial. BEALL 08 Jun 1896 William Beall died yesterday at his home at Folck's Mills and was buried today at Mt Carleton. He leaves a large family of grown children among whom are: A B Beall and Mrs M Hoffman of this city. He was about 75 years of age. BLONSKY 13 Jan 1896 Mr John Blonsky, a B&O brakeman and Miss Bertha Bockhouse were married at the German Lutheran Church last night. The ceremony was conducted by Rev Raymond and the parties repaired to the residence of the bride parents at Valley and Walnut Streets for a delightful supper. The Blonskys will reside in the city. C&O Canal 16 Jul 1896 Officials of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal are exercising the strictest precautions to prevent bicycling on the tow path, yet, in defiance of a special order which was sent out from canal headquarters some time ago prohibiting wheelmen from traveling on the tow path, there have been many violations by touring bicyclists and those of this vicinity. The prohibitory order was issued on behalf of the safety of the boatmen who were constantly complaining about the interruption to travel by the great number of bicycles which, also in several cases, were the cause of frightening the mules and placing the animals lives in jeopardy by the teams plunging into the canal while scared. CRESAP 05 Mar 1896 Mr Luther Martin Cresap died yesterday at his home near Oldtown. He was born Sep 14, 1812, a son of the late Mr & Mrs James M Cresap and grand-son of Michael Cresap, an early settler who is buried in Trinity Church Yard, NY. He was an only child and engaged in milling and amassed a large fortune. He married a daughter of Nicholas P Ryan who died several years ago. No children were born of this union. A small Catholic Church was built near his late residence in honor of his wife. His nearest living relatives are cousins: Mr James C. Sprigg of Washington DC; Mrs Sarah Long; and Mrs Louisa Patterson of this city who are children of Michael Sprigg, a cousin of the deceased. Also, Joseph Sprigg of this city; Randolph Sprigg of Oldtown; Richard M Sprigg of PA; and John Sprigg of WV; children of the late Joseph Sprigg, a brother of Michael Sprigg and a cousin of the deceased. And also, Mrs Cox of Wheeling WV, a daughter of Michael Sprigg; and cousin of the deceased. CREUTZBURG 20 may 1896 Barton Item- Mr Henry Creutzburg furnished a superb chapel organ for the Presbyterian Church here. EVERSTINE 20 Jan 1896 Mrs Clara L Everstine died at her late residence at Alaska WV last Saturday (18 Jan) in her 54th year. She was a daughter of J Perry Willard, deceased and the wife of D N Everstine. She leaves 4 children: Bernice and Mary, daughters and sons, Willard and Allen- all at her bedside when her death came, resulting from heart disease. The funeral is from the residence today with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. FOOTER 12 Aug 1896 Thomas J Footer Jr, son of Thomas J Footer Sr of Footer & Sons dye works, died today age 22 years. The funeral is Friday at Emmanuel Church, Rev Evans officiating. FREY 22 Apr 1896 Marriage Licence- William Frey of Cumberland and Sarah Miller of Purcell PA. HAMILTON 11 Jul 1896 Charles M Hamilton, a well known B&O employee died at Orleans X-Roads, Morgan Co, WV yesterday aged 62 years, 2 months, and 23 days. He was the father of 15 children, 10 of whom are living and were at his bedside. He was employed for the B&O for 45 years. Surviving children are: John E of Cumberland; Charles H of Green Spring WV; RG; H.; BF; GR; and Emma E of X-Roads; Mrs George W Light and Mrs Frank Scarlett of Martinsburg WV; and Mrs James Boxwell of Brunswick MD. HANECAMP 22 Jan 1896 Ex-sheriff Henry Hanecamp died yesterday at the residence of his son-in-law Mr Frederick Dilfer at Lonaconing. He was in his 67th year and was elected sheriff in 1879, being a resident of Lonaconing at the time. He later moved to Cumberland for a short time and was in the saloon business when his health failed and he moved back to Lonaconing. His wife died years ago and he had 7 children survive: Mrs Mary Dilfer and William of Lonaconing; Misses Laura and Louisa and also Ezekial of Baltimore; Charles of Cumberland and John, somewhere in the west. The funeral is tomorrow at Lonaconing with interment at the family burial grounds. HARDEN 25 Mar 1896 Marriage Licences- James W Harden and Carrie Matilda Rephorn of Eckhart. HARTLEY 09 Apr 1896 Flintstone- The marriage of Emory Hartley of Oldtown and Miss Chloe Wilson, daughter of Argyle Wilson of Town Creek. This was Rev G W Feelmyer's first wedding performance. HENDRICKSON 20 Mar 1896 Mr John N M Hendrickson, one of the county's most prosperous farmers, died last night at his residence in Pleasant Valley, about 9 miles east of the city. He was in his 70th year. Besides his wife, he leaves a number of grown children. The funeral is Sunday from Prosperity Church with interment in Union Grove Cemetery. HENDRICKSON 02 Sep 1896 Mr Charles Frantz, son of Mr & Mrs J E N Frantz of 313 N Centre Street and Miss Allie Hendrickson were married last night at the home of the bride's sister on Broadway by Rev Dr. Rice. Mr J William Ftantz and Miss Bessie Frantz, brother and sister of the groom were attendants. JOHNSON 30 Jul 1896 Mrs Ann Johnson died yesterday at her home in garrett Co near Frostburg, aged over 80 years. Her husband, the late Thomas Johnson, was a grandson of Thomas Johnson, a leading spirit of the Revolutionary War and the first governor of Maryland. She is survived by 4 sons; Joshua and Samuel who conduct a large lumber business at Frostburg; and Charles and Thomas Johnson; and also, one daughter, Mrs Carrie Coulehan. KIFER 27 Feb 1896 Mrs Silas Kifer Jr died last Feb 20th at Pratt MD, age 21years, of grippe after suffering for several weeks. She was the eldest daughter of Mr Henry Robinette of Cresaptown. She leaves her husband and 2 small children; Chester, about 4 years; and a daughter of 4 months. The funeral was last Friday, Rev Harris officiating, with interment at the old burying grounds near the late residence. KNIERIEM 24 mar 1896 Mr C G Knieriem, a groceryman of this community, died this morning at his home on Highland Street, aged 43 years. He was a son of William Knieriem and married Miss Annie Wellington, sister of Hon. George Wellington and had 2 children, a boy and girl, ages 7 and 2 years. He also leaves his wife, and parents and 3 brothers; Frederick, Henry and Gus; 2 married sisters, Mrs William Korns of this city and Mrs Harvey Weimer of Myersdale. Burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery. KNIPPENBURG 09 Sep 1896 Mr Henry Knippenburg Sr. of Oldtown MD, died on Monday (7 Sep) of an acute attack of cholera morbus. He was in his 71st year and is survived by his wife and several married children. KREIGBAUM 13 Jul 1896 J. Peter Kreigbaum died Saturday (11 Jul) at his late residence on Mechanic Street in his 83rd year. He had been in feeble health for the last 3 months. He was born near Frostburg and when young, moved to Corrigansville, which was once known for many years as Kreigbaum. His wife, a daughter of the late James Wright, a renown jeweler, survives and three grown daughters: Mrs Ligora Shaffer of Wiley Ford WV; Mrs William Arnold and Miss Rosa Kreigbaum at home. The funeral is from St Patricks. KREITZBURG 24 Jan 1896 Court of Judge Sloan–Case 30, State vs. Thomas Wolford was disposed of with a plea of guilty of carrying a concealed weapon. Wolford is the young man from whom John Kreitzburg got the revolver with which he shot James Campbell. Case 19, State vs. John Kreitzburg the jury was still out at the time of going to press. Later– the jury found the defendant guilty on the third count. A motion for a new trial has been filed. 11 Feb 1896 At 12:30, John Kreitzburg was brought into court by Sheriff Miller. Judge Sloan then stated that the attorneys in the case of the State vs. Kreitzburg had made a motion for a new trial, but after considering the testimony in the trial, he had concluded that the jury brought in the best verdict possible, and therefore, over ruled the motion. The judge then sentenced him to the lowest penalty under the law– Eighteen months in the penitentiary. Kreitzburg was found guilty of shooting James Campbell with intent to maim. KREITZBURG 27 Jan 1896 Circuit Court Case State vs. Mrs Kreitzburg of Eckhart, for the sale of liquors to minors tried before the court, with Pearre for the State. The court found in this case, a verdict of not guilty. LAING 18 Jul 1896 Mr Francis Laing of Fayette Avenue died today from paralysis that lasted the night, aged 44 years. He was once engaged in the grocery business with his father and most recently, sold his extensive real estate interests in South Cumberland. He leaves a wife and 4 children, one of which, Clara recently married to Harvey Stallings and now resides in Horton WV and two brothers; Frederick and Harry Laing. The funeral is from the home with Rev Moffitt presiding. LASHLEY 05 May 1896 H. Clay Lashley died Sunday (3 May) while in Hancock visiting his son John, the proprietor of the Light House. He had recently sold his hotel at Petersburg VA and had stopped to visit his son before relocating elsewhere. On Friday, he received a stroke of paralysis which caused his death. He was raised at Elbinsville, a son of William Lashley, deceased. For several years he was a merchant at Chaneysville, served a term as sheriff in Bedford Co, and owned the La Palace Hotel in Everett for 10 years. His age was about 60 years. He leaves a wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters and also; 3 brothers, Lewis H of Girard KS; William P, a merchant of Buck Valley PA; and Jacob H Lashley, who lives in the home place; and 1 sister, Mrs Charles Koontz of Artemas PA. McKENZIE 18 Jan 1896 Joseph P McKenzie died at his home 3/4 of a mile from Cresaptown yesterday and will be buried at a place of his own selection on his farm tomorrow. He leaves a widow and 2 children, both grown and married. The son, Price lives on the farm; Nettie is married to Mr Thomas Poland and lives at Mt Savage. Mr McKenzie was born April 9, 1823 and was 67 years, 9 months, and 8 days. The funeral will be preached by Rev Gillum. McKENZIE 03 Mar 1896 Charles McKenzie died at home of his mother at Rawlings today, aged 21 years. He had suffered from pneumonia which caused his death. The funeral at Maple Grove Church at Rawlings with interment in Dayton Cemetery. McKENZIE 07 Mar 1896 Mr Joseph McKenzie, 19 years of age, died of pneumonia at home of his grandmother, Mrs Sarah McKenzie at Rawlings Station after an illness of one week. He was a nephew of the late Charles A McKenzie, who was buried last Thursday and he made his home with the same family. The funeral is tomorrow. McKENZIE 24 Sep 1896 Mr Daniel McKenzie of Cresaptown died yesterday at his residence, aged 79 years. His widow and these children survive: J Newton of Cumberland; Henry of Quicksburg VA; John F of Rawlings; George of Cresaptown; Mrs Nettie Alexander and Mrs Thomas Lancaster of Midland. The funeral is Friday from the ME Church with Rev J M Gillum. MORRIS 13 Jul 1896 Mr Robert I Morris died yesterday at his residence of a complication of ailments that ended a long illness. He was born in Winchester VA, coming here at the age of 30. He was married to Miss Patricia Sullivan who died in 1872. Eight children were born of this union and 2 survive: Mr Frank Morris and Miss Mollie Morris of this city. His second wife, Mrs Susan Criss, a sister of ex-mayor JB Humbird, survives him. He was a long time B&O engineer and once conducted a confectionary store and was a baker. Funeral services from the home and burial in Rose Hill. NEWELL 18 Jan 1896 Mrs Albert Newell died at her residence at Twiggtown today. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the home with Rev Hayes and Rev Schooley officiating and interment at the My Herman ME Church. The deceased was 27 years of age and leaves a husband and 2 small children. PAXTON 03 Jan 1896 Mrs Susannah Paxton, wife of the late Nelson Paxton, died at her late residence on Geothe St yesterday in her 77th year. Funeral is tomorrow from Zion Church on the Bedford Road and interment in the Wilson Cemetery near the church. PERRIN 23 Mar 1896 "Aunt" Polly Perrin, wife of the late Squire Linnox Perrin, died yesterday at her late residence near Flintstone, aged about 75 years. She leaves a number of grown children, among who is Dennis A Perrin, well known merchant of this city. Rev Schooley of the ME Church preached the funeral. RIZER 18 Feb 1896 Mrs Bede Rizer, wife of the late Gustav Rizer, died in Owensboro FL. A former resident, she played the organ for the English Lutheran Church for years. She died peaceably in the home of her daughter, Mrs Mamie B. Lentz. She is survived by 3 married daughters and a son. Mt Lee Rizer of this city is a nephew. RIZER 23 Jan 1896 Mrs Elizabeth A Rizer, wife of Jacob Rizer of Wellersburg, died today after a lingering illness, aged 60 years. The funeral is Saturday from the residence with interment in the family burying grounds. ROBOSSON 08 Apr 1896 Miss Marion Cornelia Robosson, the 2nd daughter of Dr & Mrs T P Robosson of Flintstone and Mr Smiley Perry, a prominent druggist of Russellville KY were married today at the bride's residence. Guests included Mayor Jacob B Humbird and wife; Mrs Humbird being a sister of the bride. ROBOSSON 03 Sep 1896 Mr John Robosson a well known farmer of Beans Cove died last night, aged 62 years. The funeral is tomorrow with burial in the IOOF Cemetery. SANDERS 12 Sep 1896 Mr John W Sanders died this morning at his residence at Smallwood & Greene Streets. He was the son of Henry Sanders and was in his 47th year. In 15 May 1877, he married Matilda Landwher and leaves her behind, with his parents and 5 children; Clara, May, John H, Ruth, and Paul Sanders. Also, 2 sisters, Mrs Henry Brown and Mrs AA Egloff; and 4 brothers, Charles T, Joseph, George C, and William E, all of this city. Services in St's Peter & Paul. SHAW 02 Jun 1896 Barton MD- The funeral of William B Shaw, eldest son of Mr & Mrs A B Shaw, who died Thursday (May 30) at the St Charles Hotel in New York, took place from the family residence yesterday afternoon at Moscow MD. The deceased was a victim of consumption after an illness of several months. Interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. He was once engaged in the mercantile business at Moscow Mills and two years ago, he accepted a business manager position for the mines at Hopewell PA. The pall bearers were Mr McIntyre of Hopewell PA; Jno. W Young of Cumberland; P C Barnes; Jno. Roal; Fred Creutzburg; and Wm. Andrews of this place. SHIPLEY 23 Jul 1896 Artemas PA- Mr Elijah Shipley died Saturday (18 Jul) aged 72 years. His wife, Miss Nancy Martin; 2 sons, George and Barney Shipley; and 3 daughters, Mrs David Jay; Mrs W B H Tewell; and Miss Mary survive. SILGER 31 Aug 1896 Mr Jacob Silger died at his late residence in Cumberland Valley last night, aged 77 years. He was a brother in law of Mr Amos Ash of Columbia Street and an uncle of James Ash, the postmaster of Flintstone. He leaves a wife, a daughter, Mrs George Snowden and sons; McClelland, Charles, and Eli of the Cumberland Valley; and Harvey of Terre Haute IN and William R of Pauling OH and numerous other relatives in Cumberland Valley. SLIGER 15 Sep 1896 Mr Charles M Sliger died today of typhoid fever, aged 29 years. Only 2 weeks ago, his father Jacob Sliger died. The funeral is tomorrow at Bethel ME Church. SPRIGG 14 Jul 1896 Mr Randolph Sprigg died this morning at his home at Rawlings Station of cholera mobus. As a young man, he went to California (1849) and returned with a considerable amount of money as a result of mining and married Maria, a daughter of Moses Rawlings. He had been employed for the C&O canal for a number of years as canal supervisor. Besides his wife, he leaves a son who is married and resides on a farm near Rawlings Station; and three daughters, Mrs Absolom Baird of this city; and Misses Margaret and Carrie Sprigg at home. His brothers are: Gen Joseph E Sprigg of the city; Richard of Brooklyn; John of Dayton OH; and one sister, Mrs John A McMahon. He was about 60 years of age. Burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery. SWARTZWELDER 31 Jul 1896 Mr Emmanuel Swartzwelder, a Chaneysville farmer, met with an unfortunate accident while cutting grass with his son on Monday (27 Jul). They were cutting through a swampy grass area and he was caught by the cutter bar and dragged by the horses, and died from the multiple wounds suffered. He was about 60 years old and leaves a wife and several children to mourn their loss. TRAIL 07 May 1896 Mrs Amanda Trail of Piney Grove, died at the residence of Mr J D Watson on Friday (Apr 1). She was 76 years, 1 month and 8 days of age and a widow of the late Nathan Trail, who died about 2 years ago. Funeral services by Rev Yost of Hancock with burial at the family plot near Belle Grove. TURNER 03 Mar 1896 Mrs Margaret Turner, widow of J Turner, died yesterday at Hancock from paralysis after 3 days of sickness, aged 59 years. She came here from Balcony Falls VA. Her only brother is Benjamin Moxley. The following children survive: Mrs Robert Terry; Mrs John ; James Turner at Hancock; Roley Turner at Salem OH; Samuel Turner at Davis WV; Peyton Turner at Everett PA; and Kate Turner at Baltimore. VAN METER 09 May 1896 Mr Jacob Van Meter died today at his late residence at Cresaptown, aged 37 years. He was taken ill 3 months ago with pneumonia and had rallied from the attack when an abscess appeared on his liver from which he died. He was a successful merchant in the Cresaptown area after coming from WV, about 22 years ago. He was married to Miss Anna M Hutson and leaves 3 boys and a girl to mourn his loss and also: 3 brothers; Isaac VanMeter of Cresaptown; George and John VanMeter of Petersburg and 2 sisters; Mrs R N Dawson of McKeesport PA; and Mrs William H Cisel of Cresaptown. The funeral is from the M E Church at Cresaptown with burial in the cemetery connected with the church, Rev J M Gillum, officiating. WAGONER 20 Feb 1896 Marriage Licence- John George Wagoner and Zita Catherine Leidinger. WEISENMILLER 08 Aug 1896 Mr John F Weisenmiller died this morning, aged 33 years, after a two year illness. He was the son of John W Weisenmiller and a well known machinist, having learned the skill at the B&O shops here. About 13 years ago, he married Miss Josephine Kornhoff and leaves her and 2 small children, ages 12 and 8 years; and a brother Jacob Weisenmiller, assistant engineer of the water works and another brother in Pittsburgh. The funeral is from the home on N Centre Street. WELSH 20 Jan 1896 James Welsh of Savage Mountain, 4 miles from Frostburg is aged 108 and with a clear mind he recalls his life and the events of this area. ( article with 2 full columns ). WIGFIELD 25 Mar 1896 Piney Grove- Mr James Wigfield of here and Miss Nora Morse of Piney Creek were married at the home of the bride on Feb 29th last. WILLISON 08 Apr 1896 Mrs Rebecca, wife of Mr george Willison of Williams Road, 5 miles from the city, died suddenly last night. She ate a hearty supper but sometime during the night, took ill and before medical help could be summoned, she died. She was about 35 years of age and leaves her husband and 5 children. The funeral is tomorrow at Mt Herman with interment in the cemetery connected to the church. WILLISON 05 Mar 1896 Mrs Nancy Willison of Plum Hollow, one mile north of Flintstone, died March 3 at age 63 years, 4 months, and 28 days. "Aunt" Nancy was interred at the ME Church cemetery with the sermon preached by Rev R S Williamson assisted by Rev Lee using a text selected by the deceased, 2 Timothy 4: 6-8. WILSON 18 Feb 1896 Mrs Rebecca Wilson died last night at the residence of son- in- law, Mr Frank Robinson on Arch Street, aged 70 years. She was formerly of Flintstone and her remains will be taken there for interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. She leaves 2 children; Mrs Frank Robinson of Cumberland and Mrs James Smith of Davis WV. WOLFORD 15 Aug 1896 Charles H Wolford of this city received a telegram from Ft Wayne IN concerning the death of his mother, Mrs Dennis Wolford last night at 10:00 pm.
