Surviving are 10 children: John Andrew of Cumberland; Dominick of Barton; Dennis at Boetchersville; Joseph at home; James at Lonaconing; Albert at Emory WV; Margaret the wife of Frank Bishop; Ruth Ellen wife of P C Marten; Sarah at home; and Edward; and also 37 gr-gr-children, 16 gr-gr-gr-children (9 of whom are gr-ch of Mrs P C Marten). Four children are deceased: Louisa, Ann, Frank, and Francis. Interment on Wednesday from St Patricks. ASH 20 Dec 1897 Mrs Louisa Ash, aged 73 years, died yesterday at the home on Bedford St, of old age. She was a widow of Mr Houston Ash and leaves the following children: John Ash, Mrs Isaac Wilson of Flintstone; Mrs George Davidson of Columbia St; Owen Ash of Baltimore Avenue; Elwell Ash of Rockwell PA; Mrs Sperry Whipp of Centreville PA; and Henry Ash of Pattersons Creek. The funeral is tomorrow from the Bedford St ME Church with burial at the IOOF Cemetery, Flintstone. BENNETT 25 Aug 1897 Mr Bombrey C Bennett died last night at his home on Johnson St of dropsy. He had been ill for 3 months and had never entirely recovered from an attack of grippe five years ago which left him blind. He was born in Charleston WV and was 63 years of age and has been a resident of Cumberland for 30 years. Shortly after the war, he entered the regular army and served several years on the frontier. He leaves a wife and 5 children. The funeral is tomorrow from the home. BROWNING 24 Jun 1897 William Russell Browning, son of Mr William Browning of near North Branch married yesterday to Miss Julia Thompson of Murleys Branch. They will reside at the farm now occupied by Mr F H McKay. CARPENTER 14 May 1897 Hyndman- Mrs Catherine A Carpenter, wife of William J Carpenter, died on May 8th, aged 60 years, 10 months, and 23 days. She was the daughter of the late John & Catherine Wilhelm and a sister of Samuel and John Wilhelm; Mrs Mary Cook; Mrs Drusilla Shaffer; Mrs Benjamin T Buckanon; Mrs J W Madore, and Mrs Josiah Cook. She was married at age 19 to William J Carpenter and 41 years of marriage produced 12 children, all of near Hyndman: Frances; Charles; Catherine; Mrs LJ McGregor; Mrs SF Myers; Laura; William; Buhrman; Henry; Bishop; Leonard; and Clare. Funeral at the ME Church with Rev JR Perdew, Rev JM Gillum of Ellerslie, and Rev CS Biggs of Cumberland officiating. Burial in Hyndman Cemetery. CREUTZBURG 17 Jun 1897 Barton- Miss Catherine Cowen, daughter of Capt. Robert Cowen of Wheeling WV and Mr E Fred Creutzburg, oldest son of Mr & Mrs Henry Creutzburg of Barton married at the residence of the bride, 83 Virginia St, Wheeling WV on Wednesday 10 June, Rev Clark of the ME Church officiating. Mrs Creutzburg and daughter Lulu, the mother and sister of the bride accompanied the couple in their return to Barton. DURRETT 26 Nov 1897 Mrs William R Durrett died Wednesday (24 Nov) at her home Grand Ave and 5th Sts, aged 44 years, 4 months 11 days. She leaves a husband ,a B & O engineer and 8 children. Funeral today with interment in Rose Hill. EVANS 15 Jun 1897 Mr William H Evans died yesterday in Frostburg, age 55 years. He was born in Tredegar, Wales in 1842, arrived in America in 1864, came to Mt Savage in 1866 and joined the family of the late James B Thomas, superintendent of the Consolidation Coal Company at Mt Savage. In 1869, he came to Frostburg and clerked for Douty, Paul and Co and for Mr Thomas before going into business for himself. He leaves a widow and two sons and one daughter. FOLCK 04 Aug 1897 Mr Jacob Folck, a pioneer of this county, died last evening at the home of a niece Mrs John W Willison of near Folcks Mills. Mr Folck was born Dec 1813 and hence, was in his 86th year. He was an uncle of D W Beall of this city, a brother of the late John Folck and Mrs Jesse Pickle and of Mrs William Beall of this county and of Mrs Cosner, wife of the late Rev S M L Cosner. Mr Folck was a constant member of the ME Church South and was largely instrumental for the erection of the beautiful little chapel known as Mt Pleasant Church, 5 miles east of this city, the shadows of which under he will slumber. The funeral is tomorrow at Mt Pleasant, Rev M Schooley officiating. GASKILL 20 Nov 1897 Mrs Mattie Gaskill, 40 years, died yesterday at her home on the Baltimore Pike near Folck's Mills. She had been ill for some time and an operation was performed to relieve her. She seemed to be recovering, when blood poisoning set in and hastened her death. Her husband, Mr W L Gaskill and one son survive. She was a daughter of the late Henry G Carleton and a sister of Mrs William Smouse of this city. Brothers, Hope and Murray Carleton live in St Louis MO. Funeral services from her late residence with burial in Mt Pleasant, Rev M B F Rice officiating. GRAHAME 26 Aug 1897 Marriage in 25 Aug in the parlor of St Patricks parochial residence, Rev Father Williams presiding. Mr Richard Johnson Grahame married Miss Alice Hergot. The groom is a son of Dr James Johnson Grahame of Frostburg and the bride is a daughter of the late Harry Hergot and Mrs Hergot, the proprietor of the Varnum House. Mr & Mrs John Collin Grahame, brother and sister-in-law of the groom served as attendants. HAMILTON 27 Apr 1897 Mr Emmanuel Hamilton of near Oldtown died of consumption after a few months of illness. HAMILTON 15 Sep 1897 Marriage Licences- Michael John Piper of Oldtown and Elmira S Hamilton of Warrior Mountain. HAMILTON 28 Sep 1897 Marriage at Mt Carlton ME South today; Miss Edith Hamilton, daughter of Mr & Mrs Levi Hamilton, of the Baltimore Pike, 3 miles east and Mr Findley C Hendrickson, a prominent member of the Cumberland Bar Association. ( 5 paragraph article) HANKS 31 Aug 1897 Jason Hanks, between 75 and 80 years of age, died at his home in Everett PA. He was the founder of the Chaneysville tannery some years ago before the war. He sold this tannery and realized enough to build a tannery at Everett which he afterwards sold to Faverweather & Ladew and retired. He was a member of the M E Church. At age 60, he married a Miss Fletcher of Flintstone who was half his age. He leaves his widow. He is a brother-in-law to Mr Elosser of Decatur St, both having married daughters of Mr John Fletcher deceased of Flintstone. Interment is Wednesday at Everett. HARDINGER 28 May 1897 Miss Hattie Hardinger, daughter of Mr & Mrs James Hardinger of Hale, aged 24 years, 7 months, and 6 days, died at her home in Cumberland Valley yesterday. Interment at the Bethel Cemetery, 10 miles out on the Bedford Road. HARDMAN 16 Jul 1897 The remains of Mrs David Trail, who died at Hendricks WV last week, were brought to Everett on Monday and conveyed to the home of her father, Mr John Hardman in Monroe Township. The deceased was 32 years, 2 months and 15 days and is survived by her husband and 3 small children. They removed to WV last spring. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Mt Pleasant Church at Mattie PA. HARTLEY 21 Oct 1897 John G Hartley died suddenly at his home in Bedford PA yesterday of apoplexy. He was a prominent businessman and had held political offices with credit. He was in his 78th year. He was married twice with these children from his first marriage: Mrs Rev. R A Miller of the ME Church; Mrs Rev J Q McAtee of the Lutheran Church; and 4 sons, Edward, John, William, and Harrison. His 2 nd wife was the widow of A B Cramer and had no children from this union. He was an uncle of Mr C L Bretz of Cumberland. HINKLE 09 Apr 1897 Order of Publication for sale of lands in an equity case of James O S Hinkle and wife Jeannie Hinkle, his wife, et al vs. Amos C Gross and Victoria Gross, his wife et al. Notice to appear until May 6, 1897. Amos Gross died 1880 and Mary Gross, his wife died Dec 1896 with these children: Amos Gross; Amanda P Gross who married Norman G McElfish; Richard L Gross; John H Gross; and Drusilla Gross married Solomon D Willison. Amanda P Gross deceased 1890 and husband Norman G McElfish with these children; Mary G McElfish married Francis R Donahoe; Charles G McElfish; George A McElfish; Ida V McElfish all unmarried; Zella F McElfish married Thomas M Donahoe; and William F McElfish under age 21 years. Richard L Gross deceased 1880 leaving widow Caroline Gross and children: Annie Gross deceased married Arthur Selby Christie with these children Myrtle L, Boyd S, Robert E, Carrie JC, all infants; Boyd A Gross and wife Emma E Gross; Minnie A Gross married George L Wilson; Harry Gross and wife Jessie D Gross. Drusilla Gross intermarried with Solomon D Willison both now deceased with these children: Samuel C Willison and wife Almira Willison; Amanda E Willison married George Hendrickson; Jennie Willison married James O S Hinkle; and Annie E Willison married Elmer Larimer. HOOK 03 Nov 1897 Marriage Licence- William Nevin Hay and Alice Mary Hook of Cumberland. HUMBERTSON 19 Oct 1897 The grand jury indicted Ellsworth Humbertson for the murder of Miss Minnie Woerner, who died Aug 1 last from arsenic poisoning which the indictment states to be administered to her on July 29. Humbertson is now in jail and will probably be tried in this term of the courts. It is claimed that the drug was given to Miss Woerner to produce and abortion. 04 Nov 1897 The trial begins. ( 3 paragraph story stating the above) 05 Nov 1897 The jury finds Humbertson not guilty as the evidence submitted did not prove it.( 3 paragraphs). JOHNSON 20 Apr 1897 Mr Isaac Johnson died Sunday (18 Apr) at Flintstone, aged 85 years. He was a constant member of the ME Church for 55 years. Survived by 2 children; Theodore Johnson in the west; Mrs John Davis of near Flintstone. One son, Alonzo Johnson died some months ago. KEEL 17 Nov 1897 Marriage Licences- George W Read and Margaret A Keel, both Cumberland; Frank Caughlin and Alice Keel both of Cumberland; and Wallace S Crow of Mt Savage and Laura E Browning of Pratt. KERNS 23 Aug 1897 Mrs Mattie Kerns, wife of John Kerns, died yesterday at her home on Bedford St extended, aged 42 years. Mrs Kerns had been a sufferer on consumption for some time and her husband is a sickly man and very poor, no doubt she suffered the pangs of poverty too. She leaves her husband and 3 children to mourn her loss. It is hoped that the kind people of Cumberland will look after the needs of this dependent and worthy family. Mrs Kerns maiden name was Mattie Rose of Westernport. KIRBY 04 Nov 1897 Mrs John Kirby died yesterday at Vale Summitt, aged 91 years. She had been confined to her room for over a year. She was born in County Cook, Ireland in 1806 and came to this country 63 years ago, where she and her husband John Kirby Sr took up residence in Vale Summitt. Mr Kirby died about 35 years ago and since then she lived with daughter Mrs Mary Fitzgerald. She was the mother of 2 sons and 6 daughters, all of whom survive except a daughter who died a year ago, Mrs K Cordial. With her when she died were these children: Mrs Fitzgerald; Mr John Kirby of Vale Summitt; and Mr WF Kirby of this city. KREITZBURG 15 Jul 1897 Last night as Samuel Logsdon and John Kreitzburg were driving up Ann St with a young woman with them, Jesse Cope ran out of a house and pulled a revolver on Logsdon and Kreitzburg demanding possession of the girl. After she alighted from the vehicle, Cope took her away with him. Charges have been made against Cope and officers are now looking for them. LEASURE 23 Jun 1897 At St Paul Lutheran Church, this city, Miss Rose Nell Leasure and Mr John Rompf will be joined in bonds of matrimony by Rev T J Yoste, pastor of the church. After the wedding a dinner will be served at the home of an aunt of the bride, Miss Mattie Rowe on Charles St. The bride is a daughter of Mr Joshua Leasure of Mt Savage. The groom is connected with the tailoring establishment of Mr H H Mansbach. McELFISH 27 Sep 1897 The remains of John McElfish, who died at the almshouse on Saturday (25 Sep) were taken to Flintstone, his former home and buried at the McElfish burial lot. His death was a result of injured by falling down the hold of the canal boat WT Hassett while riding from Washington to Cumberland. He was found unconscious by Capt. Henry Williams. The coroner said the death was due to a concussion superinduced by a blow to the head. METZ 24 Nov 1897 Marriage Licence- John A Metz and Elizabeth Preston, both of Barton. NORRIS 30 Nov 1897 Caroline Norris, 65 and child Samuel 10, of Piney Plains were robbed and the house set afire. This case is being investigated. O'NEAL 29 Apr 1897 Evitts Creek- The death of Mrs Fred O'Neal of Troy NY, formerly of Bedford County where she was born. Mr Bert O'Neal of near Dickens is the oldest son. Children Harry, George, Walter, Nora and Gertie live at the home in New York. PARKER 24 Jun 1897 Frostburg- Miss Alexenia Elesta Porter, the 3 rd daughter of Mr John L Porter was married yesterday to Mr Harry Vincent Parker of Portsmouth VA. The marriage took place at St Michaels Catholic Church, pastor Rev S J Clark officiating. ( 7 paragraphs of particulars) PITZER 14 Apr 1897 Marriage today of Mr Harry Austin Pitzer, son of James Pitzer of Columbia St and Miss Theodosia Sowers, daughter of Mr & Mrs Jacob Sowers of Polk St at the home of the brides parents by Rev T J Yost. RAWLINGS 02 Sep 1897 Mr Charles M Rawlings died yesterday at his home near Potomac MD, aged 49 years, from a complication of diseases. He was formerly engaged in the general merchandise business but retires some years ago. He is a grandson of Colonel Moses Rawlings, a old soldier of the Revolutionary War and son of the late Judge Moses Rawlings. Brothers and sisters surviving: Lloyd R. Rawlings of Oakland MD; William L Rawlings of Cumberland MD; George M & Newton M Rawlings of Potomac MD; Moses Rawlings of St Louis MO; A. C. Rawlings and Mrs Randolph Sprigg of Rawlings Station and Mrs Alex M King of Cumberland. The funeral is tomorrow with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. RICE 21 Jul 1897 Mr Harry W Rice of Twiggtown, a son of Mr & Mrs Columbus Rice and Miss Mamie Bowden, 3 rd daughter of James Abel Boyd Bowden of Gross were married tody by Rev H F B Rice at the parsonage on Bedford St. RICHARDSON 26 Apr 1897 Mrs Ellen Richardson died this morning at her late residence S. Centre St. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Shriver. She was born on June 24, 1818, and thus was 78 years, 9 months of age. She married in 1840 to J Lynn Richardson, who died shortly after the marriage. No children survive. Funeral from Christ Reformed Church, S Centre St with burial in Rose Hill cemetery. RING 19 Oct 1897 Mr Samuel H Ring died this morning at 51 Baltimore St near Decatur St. His death was due to lung trouble from which he suffered for over a year. Mr Ring was married and 26 years of age but had no children. He was the son of the late Peter Ring and had been employed for Mr RR Henderson for 6 years. The funeral is tomorrow from the home by Rev Riley of Kingsley ME Church with interment in Greenmount Cemetery. SHOEMAKER 09 Sep 1897 William H Shoemaker, aged 46 years, died yesterday as he was being taken from Western Maryland Hospital to his home, No. 19 Broadway, where he wished to die. He had been hospitalized for some time suffering from cancer of the liver. He was a B & O brakeman, belonged to St Marks Reformed Church, and leaves a wife and 2 children. His remains will be taken to Glenco PA for burial. SHROYER 17 Jun 1897 Daniel Shroyer, aged 60, died yesterday at Western Maryland Hospital where he had been taken for treatment some days ago for typhoid fever. He leaves a wife, one son and one daughter, both grown. The remains were taken to Narrows Park where the funeral took place with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. SHROYER 15 Nov 1897 Mrs Edward Shroyer died at her home in Cooks Mills yesterday, aged 29 years, from pneumonia. She had been ill for sometime. She is survived by her husband and 3 small children. SHUCK 10 Sep 1897 Miss Ella S Shuck, aged 21 years, daughter of Mr John H. & Mrs Susan B Shuck, died last night after an illness of less than a week from a combination of cerebral spinal meningitis and typhoid fever. She was stricken Saturday and was employed by the Eyler Brothers on N Centre Street. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery. SMITH 29 Jun 1897 Miss Ida E Smith, the only daughter of Dr J T Smith of Chaneysville and Dr C D Candler of Baltimore were married June 24 in Baltimore by Rev R H Taylor. SOYSTER 01 Nov 1897 Mr Henry Soyster, 72 years of age, died yesterday morning at his home 141 Madison St from a paralytic stroke. Born in Cumberland Dec 5, 1825, he was the youngest of 8 children of Michael & Jane Soyster. He was married to Miss Mary M. Fletcher on Aug 2, 1860 . She survives with no children. Services from the home with Rev M F B Rice officiating and interment in Centre St ME Cemetery. SPRIGG 13 Sep 1897 The remains of Richard M Sprigg, who died several months ago in New York, arrived in Cumberland on Wednesday for final interment in Rose Hill Cemetery beside his wife who died several years since. The remains will be accompanied by William O Sprigg Esq., son of the deceased. Friends and pallbearers are requested to assemble at the B & O station in time to meet the train. 15 Sep 1897 Mr Sprigg was 92 years old and was a brother of General Joseph Sprigg of this city. Mr Sprigg was superintendent of the Staten Island RR prior to his death. His one son, William O Sprigg is an official of the Southern RR located in Ashville NC. TWIGG 09 Apr 1897 Mrs Lucinda Jones died yesterday at Ellwood PA. Mrs Jones was a daughter of Mr Amos Twigg, formerly of here and a granddaughter of Mr Charles Quantz. TWIGG 22 Jun 1897 While attempting to hive a swarm of bees yesterday at his farm near Oldtown, Mr Adam Twigg was stung so badly that his life is despaired of. The bees settled upon him by the thousands and it is reported that yesterday, he turned black. It is not known the cause of the bees becoming angry. It was not so warm yesterday but perhaps Mr Twigg had been working hard and was very warm when he went among them which has a tendency to aggravate them. Smoking is effective to quell them and also sprinkling sweet water over them tends to humor them, but no one should attempt to go among them in a state of perspiration. Notice to appear until May 6, 1897. ZEMBOWER 06 Nov 1897 Young Perry Zembower, age 16 years, son of Josiah Zembower of Little Valley, died from an accident while hunting. He was standing, leaning on his gun under his arm pit when his brother asked, " What if it goes off"? He told his brother it could not unless the trigger were pulled and raised his foot to the trigger to show him. His foot slipped and hit the trigger discharging the gun, entering his right side and exiting his left side, killing him in a short time. He leaves his father and mother and 5 brothers and 5 sisters to mourn him. Funeral services at centenary with Rev Howard L Schlincke. --------------------------- © 1999-2002 Charles Often
