Her death was caused by the grippe. She leaves 5 sons and 1 daughter. One of her sons, Frank Alderton lives in Cumberland. The funeral will be on Monday morning. AUTO IN CUMBERLAND 12 Feb 1900 The first auto on the Cumberland streets is an advertizing vehicle for the Swift & Co attracting much attention as it arrived from Chicago and drove up Mechanic Street. It will be here for some time and then be taken to Washington DC. BEALL 09 Mar 1900 Harley Beall, a 19 year old son of Mr George Beall, a farmer living near Hazen, died last night at his fathers home. A few days ago, he was engaged in hauling logs on a sled when the horses he was driving became scared and ran, and caused the sled to pass over his body. He was hurt but was back in a short time as usual. Later, two or three nights, the boys were engaged in a lifting contest at Smouse's Mill after which they attended a school exhibition where he fell ill into a unconscious state from which he never recovered. BENDER 22 Jun 1900 August Bender, a Green Ridge farmer, died Tuesday (19 Jun) of dropsy. He was 68 years of age, came from Germany 58 years ago, and was a member of the ME Church for 30 years. A widow and 8 children survive; George and Albert Bender of Eckhart; Jacob Bender of Town Creek; Mrs Calvin Weddle of Little Orleans; Mrs Wallizer of Davis WV; and Columbus, Daniel and Ella at home. The interment was Thursday with Rev J W H Beall, officiating. BRANT 05 Jun 1900 Mrs B Ellen Brant, wife of Hillery Brant, the well known brick maker, died at her home at Sinclairsville WV yesterday from complications of diseases, aged 57 years. Besides her husband, these children survive: W H Brant of Hewitt; Mrs J E Dawson; Mrs Charles Ridgley; Mrs Alonzo Walker; Mrs George Fiedkenstine; Mrs William Hizer Jr; Miss Ida; and Messers, FP Brant; William Brant; J B Brant; C L Brant; Owen Brant; and Alfred Brant of this city. The funeral is Wednesday from St Paul Lutheran Church. BRASHEARS 18 Apr 1900 The funeral of Daniel Forest Brashears was at Mt Harmon on Tuesday, Rev T J Yost of the English Lutheran Church in the absence of Rev E Anthony presided. Mr Brashears was 61 years and 11 months of age. He leaves a widow and 3 children; Ira at home; Mrs Edgar Hite of the home place; and Mrs Clinton Hardman of Hale PA. Also, 4 brothers, Joseph M Brashears of Mt Harmons; William A Brashears of South Cumberland; D W Brashears of Deer Park MD; and I D Brashears of Cumberland; and a sister, Mrs S Brant of Cumberland. He enlisted in the Union Army on August 8, 1862 in the 8th MD Reg. and served until the close of the war in 1865, seeing action at : The Wilderness; Culpeper Court House; Five Forks; with Sherman at Richmond; and at Appomattox when Lee surrendered. BROWNING 14 Mar 1900 Jesse Browning, aged 21 years, died at his home in Flintstone yesterday after an illness of a few days. The funeral is Tuesday with burial in the family grounds near Flintstone. The deceased was a brother to Mrs Oliver Twigg, this city. BUCY 21 May 1900 Mrs Mary Bucy, aged 37 years, wife of Henry Bucy, died at her home on Gay Street yesterday. She is survived by her husband and 5 children, the youngest, only 5 days old. The remains will be taken to Magnolia for interment on Tuesday afternoon. BYRNES 29 Nov 1900 Miss Gertrude Dundon, daughter of Mrs Michael Dundon and Bernard Byrnes a son of Mr & Mrs Lawrence Byrnes married at St Michael's Church in Frostburg, Father Clark officiating. After the ceremony, a large and elaborate dinner was served at the brides home in Eckhart. CHANEY 24 Sep 1900 Mr Isaac Chaney of Rush was married on Saturday evening to Miss Emeline Smith at her home near Flintstone. The groom is 71 years old and has a family of married children. The bride is 54 years old and is a daughter of Mr Isaac Smith, one of the oldest men in this county. The marriage was performed by Rev Mr AS Beane. The happy couple was serenaded by a calathumpian band after the ceremony. CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS 23 Oct 1900 Confederate soldiers who are buried here in Allegany County are disinterred and reinterred at Rose Hill Cemetery in a moving ceremony. He had been a great sufferer of catarrh of the stomach and a nervous condition and has been an invalid for several years. Funeral from the house today with interment in Laurel cemetery. DEAN 07 Sep 1900 Mrs Barbara Ellen Dean, a widow living at Corrigansville, died there of typhoid fever this morning , aged 52 years. A daughter, Miss Minnie is also ill with the same illness. She leaves 4 other children: Charles; Theodore; and Mrs Agnes Deffinbaugh all of Corrigansville; and Mrs Mary Lowery of Mt Savage. The funeral is Sunday with interment at Mt Savage. DEETZ 11 Jul 1900 The funeral of Clarence Deetz, son of Mr Perry Deetz, took place from the residence on Lexington St, conducted by the rev Mr Zimmerman of Kingsley ME Church with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. DEETZ 08 Nov 1900 Miss Anna May Deetz, daughter of Mr & Mrs Perry Deetz and Mr Harry Rollins, a rougher in the tin plate mill, married last night in the parsonage of Kingsley ME Church. After a bridal tour, they will reside in Cumberland. DEREMER 14 Mar 1900 Utica NE- Mrs Lenora Bevard, aged 32 years and 12 days died at her home in Colorado on Tuesday 27 Feb 1900. She was born in Cumberland Valley, Bedford County PA on 15 Feb 1868, the oldest daughter of William and Amanda Deremer. She came with her parents to York Co, NE in 1879 and was united in marriage to E C Bevard on 25 Dec 1898. Four children, Paul Edward, George Arthur, Susie Amanda, and Rose Ethel Bevard survive. Also, her husband, father, mother, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters, and many friends. Funeral at the home with a Methodist minister and burial in Holyoke Cemetery. Her illness was rheumatism, heart, and nervous trouble. DICKEN 20 Aug 1900 Mrs Elizabeth Dicken died early this morning at her home 10 miles North in Cumberland Valley, aged 87 years. She is the widow of John Dicken who died about a year ago. She had been ill for several weeks. Survivors are: Mrs Daniel Evans of Hyndman; Mrs James Hardinger and Mrs Gorge S Hite of the Cumberland Valley; Mrs Alice Zembower at home; Thomas Dicken of Winfield KS; Charles F Dicken of Washington DC; and Clark Dicken of Cumberland Valley. She was a member of the ME Church. Funeral is tomorrow from Fellowship with Rev E Anthony and Rev A S Beane officiating. DIEHL 06 Dec 1900 Julia Buly, wife of M Buly, died last night at her home on Columbia Street, aged 47 years, 3 months, and 22 days, being born on 13 Aug 1853. She leaves behind her husband, her aged father Jacob Diehl; 3 daughters, Mrs Laura Thompson, Miss Moline and Miss Maude; 2 sons, Sanford Buly and William Buly; 3 sisters, Jane, wife of BF Davis of Independence Street; Levina, wife of Wilson Brant of Columbia Street; and Polly, wife of Johnson Steckman of Flintstone; 2 brothers, Francis Diehl of Centenary and Bernard Diehl of Chaneysville. The funeral is Saturday from the MP Church, Rev J G Sullivan assisted by Rev A H Zimmerman of Kingsley church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. ELOSSER 10 Oct 1900 Miss Mary E Elosser, daughter of Mr & Mrs L E Elosser, a South Cumberland merchant and Mr Maurice Willison, a son of Mr JB Willison, were married last night at the residence of Mr PL McElfish on Georges Street, by Rev Mr Yost.. Mr & Mrs Willison drove to the groom's home in Flintstone after the ceremony. FLETCHER 21 Mar 1900 Mrs Rebecca Effinger Fletcher, aged 99 years and 3 months, widow of John J Fletcher who died 60 years ago, died yesterday at Winchester VA.. She was married 84 years ago and raised a family of 11 children, 3 of whom are still living. GEATZ 27 Feb 1900 Mr John Geatz died last night at the home on Cumberland Street, aged 67 years. He had been ill for one week and son Joseph had been summoned from Baltimore but arrived too late for his father to know him. He was born in Germany in 1832 and came to Cumberland about 40 years ago. He married Miss Kate Bernard 37 years ago and the following children resulted: Joseph B; Katie B; George P; and Mary Goatz; all living except Katie. George is married to Miss Ritter and Mary to Mr Theo Wallace. After the death of his first wife, Mr Geatz married Katie Eileat and these children resulted: Johnnie, Maggie and Willie. He was a member of SS Peter & Paul and services will be Wednesday with interment in the SSPP Cemetery. 01 Mar 1900 The funeral of Mr John Geatz was at St Peter's & Paul, Father Matthew officiating with interment in the cemetery associated with the church. Wife Catherine Geatz was appointed to administrate the estate. GILLUM 29 Jan 1900 Mrs John Gillum, mother of Rev J M Gillum of the ME Church, died this morning at her home at Union Grove, 4 miles north of the city. She was 56 years of age and a member of the ME Church. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Joshua, William G and Jeremiah living near Cumberland; and Duncan, Mrs Ross , and Mrs Hosea Miller of the Cumberland Valley; and Rev J M Gillum of Brunswick. The funeral is Wednesday, Rev Anthony presiding, and burial at Union Grove Cemetery. GRUBER 11 Apr 1900 Mr Henry W Gruber's new grocery in the old Tearny property, No 5 Baltimore Street was last night thrown open to the public in a delightful manner. It was thronged last evening by visitors who were of the unanimous opinion that it was up to date in every particular and ranks with the best equipped groceries of the city. ( 5 paragraph article ). GRUBER 04 Jun 1900 Mrs Jacob Gruber died very suddenly this morning at Johnstown PA. The funeral will take place there on Wednesday. Mr Henry W Gruber will leave for Johnstown tomorrow to attend the funeral. His store will be closed on Wednesday at 2:00 o'clock. HARDINGER 12 Jun 1900 Ft Collins CO Weekly Courier- On Monday, June 4, 1900 at the family residence on Remmington St, Mrs Sarah Hardinger died of heart disease, aged nearly 72 years. She was a native of Bedford Co PA coming to this area 8 years ago. She is the mother of 8 children, all grown and one boy and one girl live in this city. She was ill only an hour or two before her demise. She was the widow of the late Levi Hardinger of Cumberland Valley, eight miles north of Cumberland. HARDINGER 19 Jun 1900 Mr Benson Hardinger of Hazen and Miss Flora A Zembower of Little Valley were married by Rev J M Yingling at the parsonage on S Centre St. They left on a bridal tour on a trip to western Pennsylvania. HARDINGER 20 Jun 1900 Mr Cromwell W Leasure, a clerk at Orrick's and Miss Nannie V Hardinger, daughter of the late Hiram Hardinger, were married at her home in Centenary. HARDMAN 13 Oct 1900 About 40 men gathered at the farm of Levi Hardman, 8 miles out Bedford Road yesterday to raise a new barn. The heavy timbers were all in readiness and the work was pushed right along so that by evening, the frame was up, the lath was on. And the barn was partially weather boarded. This is considered a good day's work, for in some cases, the frame work of a large barn takes all day. The hands work gratis on occasions of this kind, the barn builder gives all a big dinner and a big supper. HENDRICKSON 22 Jan 1900 Mrs Mary Hendrickson, died last night at her late residence, 10 miles east of this city near the Baltimore Pike in the 90 th year of life. She was the relict of Mr William Hendrickson. She leaves the following children: W Scott Hendrickson of Davis WV; Thornton Hendrickson, Mrs Elmira Willison, Amanda, Perry, and George Hendrickson all of near the homestead; Mrs Sarah Growden of Cumberland Valley; and Mr John S Hendrickson of Cumberland. She was an aunt of F C Hendrickson Esq. and William Hendrickson of this city, and County Commissioner J A Hendrickson. She was a member of the Methodist Church for 50 years. HENDRICKSON 22 Mar 1900 Miss Anna Hendrickson, daughter of Mr & Mrs Summerfield Hendrickson, an engineer on the WV Central RR and niece of Attorney F C Hendrickson, died at the home of her parents this morning after a lingering illness, aged 25 years and 27 days. Her brother is Charles Hendrickson, a clerk in the B & O offices in Baltimore. The funeral is Saturday with services in the home, the funeral at Union Grove Church and burial in the cemetery of that place. HENDRICKSON 16 Nov 1900 Mrs Charity Hendrickson, widow of the late M N Hendrickson, died yesterday at the late residence, 31 Independence Street, aged 72 years. She was twice married, her first husband having been a Mr Gordon. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs John Hendrickson and Mrs J A Hendrickson of Pleasant Valley; and Mrs R Smith of Cumberland Valley. She was an aunt of Finley Hendrickson Esq. and grand mother of Dr H E Smith of Cumberland and a step grand mother of County Commissioner J A Hendrickson and Constable W A Hendrickson. HOOK 14 Mar 1900 Mr Elias Hook, a well known farmer living near Centreville, died yesterday morning, aged 60 years. He leaves a wife, and 4 grown children. The funeral will take place tomorrow. IMES 20 Jun 1900 Mrs Mary Imes, wife of Israel Imes, a farmer living near Hewitt, was alone during a violent thunderstorm about 4 miles north of Flintstone yesterday afternoon and when the husband and other members of the family returned home, they found her lying on the floor near the kitchen stove dead. While the body bore signs of having been burned by electricity, there was no other signs of the electric strike. She was about 50 years of age. KEEFER 04 Oct 1900 Mrs Sallie (Roland) Keefer died yesterday at her home between Chaneysville and Hewitt at an age between 75 and 80 years. Besides her husband Jacob Keefer, aged 80 years, her surviving children are; Mrs Catherine Beegle of Rainsburg PA; Mrs Mary Ann McElfish of Hewitt; Mrs Malinda Hymes of Chaneysville; and Miss Jane Keefer of home. One son, David died about 6 weeks ago. Funeral today at Chaneysville, Rev Mr Beall of Flintstone officiating. KIFER 21 Apr 1900 Fred, 16 years of age son of Mr George Kifer, living on Pine Ridge near Oldtown, died suddenly last night. He was in Oldtown and upon returning, had a severe pain in his side, and within a few minutes later was deceased. The funeral is tomorrow at Town Creek. KNIGHT 18 Jun 1900 Columbus Knight, the well known farmer of Mt Harmon, 3 miles east of Cumberland, died yesterday morning, aged 55 years, due to consumption. He leaves a wife and two brothers, Floyd Knight, ex-sheriff of Mineral Co WV and John W Knight of Pleasant Valley. Mr Knight is the brother-in-law of Dr W F Twigg of this city. The funeral is tomorrow from the Mt Harmon Church. LEASE 07 Dec 1900 Robert Lease of Cresaptown, employed at the Cumberland & Potomac Cement works at Pinto, was struck by a westbound B & O train # 1917 on yesterday afternoon as he was crossing the track on his way home from work. He was hurled about 15 feet into the air striking a switch ball and landing on his head, a violent concession of the head resulting. Also, injuries to his shoulder and a left arm was broken. He was just married to Miss Maggie Cecil on Thanksgiving day. He was a son of Mr Frederick Lease and was about 25 years of age. LOCAL INDUSTRY 29 Jan 1900 thru 5 Feb 1900 Sketches of local business concerns, each about 1 paragraph long and 5 to 8 per issue. MAY 12 Nov 1900 Frank May, the 16 year old son of Mr George B May, manager of a tannery at Bedford, was shot in the breast and instantly died Saturday (Nov 10) by Warren Mills. The boys had been hunting together about 9 miles from here and while pointing their guns at one another, Mills, thinking his weapon was not cocked, pulled the trigger. The charge pierced his heart. McELFISH 12 Apr 1900 Marriage Licence- Susan McElfish of Flintstone and Samuel C Horn of Manns Choice PA McELFISH 27 Mar 1900 George McElfish, a farmer of Rush, was found dead on the tracks of the B & O crossing at Oldtown. One leg was severed above the knee and one below the knee, run over by a yard engine. He was seen in an intoxicated condition prior to the accident and was warned to stay away but walked down the ties anyway. He was between 50-60 years of age. It is felt that he came to Cumberland to visit his daughter Mrs Harvey Means of Blaul Avenue. He leaves a wife and 2 other children; Irvin G and Mrs Zora Hinkle at Rush; brothers, Luther and Upton at Rush and was a brother-in- law to Mr Conda Wilson the Tremont Hotel proprietor. ( 5 paragraph story) 28 Mar 1900 Irvin McElfish, son of George McElfish, whose dead body was found on the tracks at the Oldtown crossing, came to town lat evening and returned to home with the remains of his father. Young McElfish is not satisfied with the account of the death and, even though his father was accidently killed, he may have been drugged and killed and robbed of his money and watch, as he had come to town with a great deal of money ( 3 paragraphs). 29 Mar 1900 Remarks made by a man boarding a train are included as a 5 paragraph item. A stranger to Mr Poling, attempting to meet someone at the C&P RR station, was overheard to say," My buddy was killed last night" and "... the work was done alright" . The funeral of Mr George McElfish was this morning from the home and burial in the cemetery at Rush. McMULLEN 16 May 1900 Mrs Elizabeth R McMullen died last night at Frostburg, aged 70 years. She was born near Frederick city and is the mother of the firm of McMullen Brothers. She is survived by husband, Hugh McMullen St and children: Mary, wife of James Barrett; Miss Catherine; Daniel McMullen of Frostburg; and Hugh A McMullen and John P McMullen of Cumberland. The funeral is Friday at Frostburg. McMULLEN STORE 04 Apr 1900 The McMullen Brothers department store "The St Nicholas" opening a new facility. [2 column story with photo of building]. MINER's STRIKE 01 Aug 1900 The strike of the George's Creek region coal miners broken as the miners returned to work for the first time since April 11, 1900. They were asking, among other things, a raise from 55cents to 60cents per ton of coal and decide to return to work rather than be idle. MINES 30 Apr 1900 Miners hold meeting with their representatives in the bargaining to accept the Mine operator's offer and return to work. Georges Creek Coal & Iron Co; Barton & Georges Creek Valley Coal Co; Ocean-Consolidation #1; Midland-Big Vein; Eckhart-Consolidation; Barton-Caledonia; Lonaconing-Jackson, Koontz, New Detmold, Appleton, and Shamrock; Klondyke-Consolidation #7; Hoffman- Consolidation; and Frostburg-Union Mines #1 and #2. MONROE TOWNSHIP Bedford Co PA 12 Apr 1900 Mr John M Von Stein of Clearville has leased the farm of Elizah Smith near Robinsonville for a time of 20 years for the purpose of mining iron ore. The ore has been assayed and found to be 60 %, equal to iron ore found anywhere in this country. If this ore proves to be there in paying quantities, a railroad will be build to the Huntingdon & Broadtop lines or to the B & O lines at Little Orleans. Besides iron ore, quantities of timber may also be hauled. MORRISON 25 Jun 1900 Mrs Esther R Morrison died at her home in Westernport on Saturday (23 Jun) after a week of paralysis. She was born in Alexandria VA but resided at Morrison Mills near Barton until 1892, when she moved to Westernport and erected a large residence. She is survived by 5 children; James Morrison of NY; Attorney, Taylor Morrison; Mrs W W Shultice; and Misses Ethel and Rosalie Morrison of Westernport. MORSE 11 Dec 1900 Miss Alice Morse died at the Pennsylvania Hotel last night, aged 23 years. She was taken ill on Sunday night with inflamation of the stomach. Her home is in Piney Creek in Bedford County. She was employed at the hotel and had assisted in preparing supper and was stricken shortly thereafter. Her parents are deceased. Mr George Shipley, an uncle of the deceased and a produce farmer delivering his products in this town, will take the remains to Piney Creek for burial. POTTS 20 Aug 1900 Mrs Louisa Potts, wife of Jonathan Potts, died at her home in Hancock on Sunday (18 Aug) of dropsy, aged about 74 years. She was a Miss Moss before marriage. She is survived by the widower, and these children: Frank Potts of Johnstown; Mrs Sallie Haller of Cumberland; and Mrs E Athey, Mrs William Noel, and John and Robert Potts of Hancock. REES 18 Jan 1900 Keyser WV- Mrs Samuel Rees of New Creek died from a stroke of paralysis at her home this morning. She was a Miss Shaw of Barton and was in her 57 th year. Her husband, a wealthy farmer, survives and there were no children. The funeral is Saturday with interment in Rees Tannery Cemetery. RICE 04 Dec 1900 Mrs Rachel Rice, wife of Christian Rice, died near Chaneysville. She was the mother of Charles and Philip Rice of Keyser WV; Lizzie, the wife of Jeff Shaffer of Hyndman; Savannah, wife of Jerome Leonard ; and Jane, wife of James Leonard; and George of the home place. She was an aunt of John F Rice of Cumberland. She was about 79 years of age and a member of the ME Church South. The interment took place in Chaneysville, Rev Bealle officiating. Her husband was a member of the 38th Reg PA Vol during the Civil War. RIDGELY 20 Jun 1900 A connection has been made between the Annapolis Ridgleys and the Allegany County Ridgleys. Thirteen silver spoons have been handed down from Absolom and Anne Ridgley of Annapolis, a successful merchant in early colonial days in foreign commerce. A son, Charles Ridgley settled in Allegany County in the 19th century. ( 4 paragraph article). ROBINETTE 05 Apr 1900 Miss Laura Virginia House, daughter of Mrs Rebecca E House of Flintstone married yesterday to Mr Will Clement Robinette, a son of John B Robinette of Flintstone and will reside in Braddock PA. ROBOSSON 13 Jun 1900 The Maples, home of Dr Thomas Perry Robosson of Flintstone was the scene of a pretty wedding last evening. Mr Llewellyn Dupont Bridges, the 5th son of Mr & Mrs Robert Bridges of Hancock, and Miss Nina May Robosson, 4th daughter of Dr and Mrs Robosson were the contracting parties. Rev James Robosson Bridges, president of the Presbyterian Women's College of Charlotte NC performed the ceremony. SCHAAF 01 Mar 1900 Mrs Bernard Schaaf died this morning as a result of an accident whereby a coal oil lamp exploded and she was terribly burned. Her husband died 4 years ago and she leaves 4 children 12, 7, 5, and 3 years old named John, Agnes, Annie, and Clara. Also surviving are her father Urban Miller of Chestnut and Valley Streets where she also lived. She was 33 years old and is also survived by brothers and sisters, Peter K; John H; Walter; George; and Urban Miller Jr; and Mrs Mary Burkett of Mt Savage; Mrs George Matt; and Mrs Maggie Strohmenger of Cumberland. Burial in St Peter's & Paul Cemetery. ( 6 paragraph article) SHAW 30 May 1900 Barton MD- Mrs Margaret Ann Shaw, daughter of Mr A B Shaw of Moscow Mills and Mr J Sloane Arnold of Keyser were married May 29 at 5:00 o'clock at the home of the bride, Rev O W Zeigler officiating. SHERTZER 04 Jan 1900 Leonard Shertzer, aged 74 years, died last night at his home on N Centre Street. He had taken ill on Christmas Day. He was a shoemaker by trade. Mr Shertzer was born in Germany and had lived in Cumberland for over 50 years. He is survived by a widow and 6 children. SHUCK 26 Jun 1900 Mrs Mary L Shuck died last night at her home on Centre and Valley Streets, aged 71 years. She is a widow of the late William Shuck and is survived by these children: B W Shuck; Carrie H Shuck; and Mrs George Keiffer; Mrs Anna B Marean; and also John H Shuck and A W Shuck are step- sons; and also sisters, Mrs John Miller of Annandale NJ and Mrs Edward Keller of Cumberland. The funeral is from the Centre Street M E Church. SHUCK 07 Sep 1900 Mrs Hannah Shuck, the widow of the late James Shuck, died on 5 Sep 1900, aged 74 years. She had been in declining health for a few years. She was the oldest daughter of Mr Ephraim Shipley and is the last survivor of the family. She married Jacob Shuck in 1844,who was a stage driver on the National Road. These children survive: Henry W Shuck, registrar of wills in Allegany County; James W Shuck, former postmaster of Cumberland but now of Pittsburgh; George C Shuck, a postal clerk in Cumberland; Harriet, wife of W S Jordan; Annie, wife of Edwin F Rizer; Margaret, wife of HN Trussell of Chicago; and Nellie, wife of Edwin Walton, deceased some years ago. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. SMITH 25 Sep 1900 Mr Isaac Smith died yesterday at his residence near Flintstone, aged 91 years, 8 months, and 11 days. He was one of the oldest men of the county and died on the farm that he had lived upon all of his life. Survivors are the wife and children; Charles and Edwin Smith, Miss Clara, Mrs Isaac Chaney and Mrs Bernard Twigg of Cumberland. The funeral is tomorrow at Fairview Church with Rev AS Beane and interment in the IOOF Cemetery. While still a young man, Mr Smith walked down Baltimore Street and he eyed Squire John B Weidener. The men were strangers to each others, but Mr Smith approached Mr Weidener and said," Stranger, here is a knife that I had always said I would give to the first man I ever met who had a larger nose than mine. Here, "take It". Mr Weidener took the knife and has it to this day. The two men became great friends and when passing on the street, one would pull his nose to the left, and one would pull his to the other side so that they could pass. STALLINGS 07 Nov 1900 Twiggtown- Mr W B Stallings almost lost his life cutting logs for the sawmill. He was working under a logged tree of about 20 feet distance, when the log broke, falling and striking him in the head. He was made unconscious for about ˝ hour. The tree measured 40 feet in length and 1 ˝ feet in diameter, also fell on his left foot crushing it in a painful manner. After a week in distress, he is only able to make a few feet with the aid of crutches . ST MARY'S 08 Sep 1900 The cornerstone of the new St Mary's Catholic Church is laid in South Cumberland by Cardinal Gibbons. SULLIVAN 21 May 1900 Mr Marshall Sullivan of Frostburg died this morning at his late residence on Beall St, aged about 75 years. He had been ill for 2 weeks. He was born in Ireland, coming to Frostburg as a young man. His wife died shortly after coming to this country. Surviving children are: William P Sullivan of Hitchen's Brothers Co of Frostburg; Mrs John Byrnes of Eckhart; Mr Thomas Sullivan of the WV Brewing Co of Huntington. The funeral is at St Michael's of Frostburg. THRASHER 05 Oct 1900 Miss Lizzie Thrasher, a daughter of James Thrasher, a farmer living in the mountain opposite the Rawlings Station, died Sunday morning after a 3 month illness as a result of medicine given to her by Mr Frank Barton, aged 33 years, a prominent farmer living in the neighborhood. Her father has sworn out a warrant for his arrest. Miss Thrasher was a domestic for a family at Rawlings until she displayed symptoms of an illness that aroused suspicions. She was questioned about her illness and finally made a dying statement, charging young Barton with fathering an unborn child and giving her medicine to conceal the condition. 06 Oct 1900 Article by Mr Frank Barton, arrested by Sheriff Martin and charged with murder...claims to be innocent, has not seen the girl in 6 months and charged that it is a "Put up job". 10 Oct 1900 It is felt that the state will be unable to make a case against Mr Frank Barton, in jail charged with murder. 12 Oct 1900 Frank Barton was released from jail according to his father and Commissioner JB Gunning, who remarked that the grand jury failed to bring a true bill of charges. TWIGG 08 Dec 1900 Miss Maude Adams and Charles Twigg were married several days ago at the bride's residence at Keyser by Rev Mr Moore. Mr Twigg is a carpenter at the B & O Shops, now working at the Mt Clare Shops in Baltimore. TWIGG 10 Sep 1900 Charles W Twigg, a young man died Saturday (8 Sep) near Mt Olivet very suddenly, having been ill only one week. Interment in Oldtown yesterday. WADE 25 Apr 1900 The trial of Walter Wade, charged with killing of Owen Edwards at Borden Shaft on Feb 27th ,over the affections of Miss Rosa Crowe, his fiancé, has begun. Follow-up stories are reported in the editions of Apr 25-28. The verdict was reached of Not Guilty. WELSH 16 Aug 1900 Thomas Welsh, aged 75 years, 4 months, and 27 days, died yesterday at his home in Hazen. He leaves 4 children; Theodore, Scott, Arthur, and Mrs Clare Leasure. He was, all of his life, a "hewer of wood", making shingles, hoops, cut cross ties, pealed bark, etc., always working in the woods. WERTZ 23 Jul 1900 Mr H M Wertz, the popular photographer and artist of Cumberland was called to Jeannette PA on the No 12 train Saturday (21 Jul) by the death of his father, Mr R F Wertz, aged 76 years. Mr Wertz, a retired merchant died on Friday (20 Jul) and will be buried today. Surviving are his wife, a number of grown children, among whom are a daughter of this city, Mrs Samuel Bopst. He was a member of the 101st Regiment PA Vol in the Civil War. Funeral to be conducted by the GAR group. WILLISON 04 Jun 1900 Mr Charles W Willison, son of Hillary F Willison of the stone house at Flintstone two miles west of Flintstone and Miss Amanda Bennett, daughter of Mr & Mrs Wesley Bennett of near Flintstone and a prominent school teacher of Bedford County , will wed at the home of the bride on June 14th. WILLISON 16 May 1900 Mr Charles Willison, aged 38 years, unmarried son of Andrew J Willison, the wealthy lumber dealer of Frostburg, died yesterday afternoon at the home of his parents of typhoid pneumonia after an illness of several months. WILSON 26 Dec 1900 Miss Esther Wilson, daughter of M L Wilson of Rush, was married to Mr Benjamin North on Christmas Eve by Rev Edgar Sutherland at the home of the bride. WILSON 23 Jan 1900 Mr Hugh Wilson died at Flintstone yesterday morning, aged 79 years. He was an undertaker of Flintstone and well known. He had been ill for some months. He was married for the second time about 1 year ago. He is survived by a wife and several children, among them, Emmanuel Wilson of Keyser WV; Andrew Wilson of Clarysville; and Jacob Wilson of Frostburg. Funeral from the home tomorrow and burial in Chaneysville. WOLFORD 29 Mar 1900 Daniel Wolford "Uncle Dan" died this morning at his house, 3 miles east of Cumberland after paralysis of the throat since December left him unable to speak but a whisper. Daniel Wolford was born June 23, 1816 near Chaneysville at the old Ab Gordon place and was, therefore, 83 years, 9 months, and 5 days old at his death. His parents moved to near Flintstone when he was 9 years old. On November 23, 1841, he married Miss Lethe Robinette who survives. They were married by Rev Daniel Collier of the M P Church. Daniel was the " Last leaf on the tree" as a brother, Hiram Wolford of near the pike on Martins Mountain died 2 years ago, and a brother Samuel Wolford of Bedford Road had died many years ago. He is survived by these children: Charles H Wolford who was a collector for the "Times" for many years and was recently appointed as J P by the governor and also works at the B & O shops; Mrs Nannie Bowden, wife of Mr Boyd Bowden on the pike; and Dennis A Wolford of Ft Wayne IN. The funeral is Saturday from Fairview Church, 2 miles west of Flintstone, Rev A S Beane preaching and interment in the Fairview graveyard.( 8 paragraph story).
