This should provide low cost transportation for citizens and increase trade and business. A car leaves every hour with the last car at 10:00 PM, a forty minute ride.. ARNOLD 24 Feb 1902 Mrs Elizabeth Druscilla Arnold, wife of Dennis Arnold of Cash Valley, died on Saturday (22 Feb) age 51 years. She leaves a husband and 9 children, 4 sons and 5 daughters, the youngest, a boy of 12 years. She was a daughter of Isaac Lafferty of this city who in the early days of stagecoaches, kept the Black Horse tavern on the National Pike near where Narrows Park now stands. The funeral is tomorrow from the home of Mrs William Brant, a daughter of 145 Walnut Street, then to Saint Peter & Paul Catholic church and then to their cemetery. ASH 01 Apr 1902 Abraham Ash, a farmer lining near Flintstone, died Saturday (28 Mar) and was buried yesterday. He was 51 years old and leaves a wife and several children. He was a brother- in-law of Messers Oliver E and Simeon Wilson of this city. BARNES 18 Jun 1902 Oakland MD- Joseph Barnes, a young man in the employ of Jennings Brothers in this county, was engaged in felling trees last Saturday (14 Jun) and was crushed to death. He was a single man and came from Little Orleans WV to which place the body was sent for burial. BARNES 17 Sep 1902 Mr Michael Barnes, a well known farmer living near Little Orleans, committed suicide yesterday morning by shooting himself in the head with a gun. A note was found in his pocketbook which stated he had contemplated suicide for some time and ended with this sentence, " I have been guilty of something, but I have never murdered anybody". Mr Barnes was age 45 years and lived in the vicinity of Little Orleans all his life. A wife and six children survive. BORTZ 19 Jul 1902 "Grandmother" Bortz, wife of George Bortz, died Friday (18 Jul) morning at her home in the Cumberland Valley, 17 miles from the city, aged 88 years. Her husband is now in his 91st year. The late Daniel Bortz of the Pennsylvania Hotel was her son. Surviving are, sons Captain Martin Bortz and JC Bortz; and daughters, Mrs WH Shaffer of Frederick Street and Mrs John Cessna of Polk Street. The funeral is tomorrow from the home. BORTZ 12 May 1902 Mr Daniel SA Bortz died yesterday morning, aged 56 years. He was the proprietor of the Pennsylvania Hotel on N Mechanic Street and was at one time in the cigar business on Baltimore Street with Mr John M Laney. He is survived by a wife, and three children; Mrs WL Speery, Miss Bertha Bortz, and Russell Bortz, all of this city. Funeral tomorrow from St Paul Lutheran Church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. BRANT 16 Apr 1902 Mrs Brant, wife of Gilbert Brant, died this morning at her home in Ridgeley WV, aged 23 years. Death was caused by typhoid fever. She was formerly Miss Dye of Barton MD. The funeral is from the home on Friday. BRANT 06 Aug 1902 A marriage at the office of city jail between Mr Harry Brant of Cumberland and Miss Laura Skidmore, a daughter of Mr & Mrs Noah Skidmore of Frostburg. The groom was sent to jail last night on a charge preferred by the bride and this morning, consented to marry her, after which, he was released from custody. CALHOUN 20 may 1902 Dr CP Calhoun died Sunday (18 May) at Altoona PA. He was born in Clearville, Bedford County and is well known in this city. Dr Calhoun was a veteran of the Civil War enlisting as a corporal in Co F 137th Reg PAV, promoted to sergeant, then to orderly sergeant, then to 1st lieutenant. He served in the House of representatives in 1887-1889. On 12 Jun 1867, he married Mary C Bortz of Bedford County. She, her step mother, and the following children survive; George of Bedford; Mrs JJ Burns of Altoona; John C at home; and 3 sisters, Mrs Emily Kegg of Everett; Mrs John Reddinger of Chaneysville; and Mrs Jennie Baker of near Everett. CESSNA 13 Jun 1902 Mrs John A Cessna died at her home in Bedford on Wednesday (11 Jun ) of diabetes. She had been confined to bed for the past 5 weeks. A daughter of Mr & Mrs William and Sarah Keyser and born at New Buenna Vista PA on 16 Oct 1847 and married to John A Cessna on 28 Jun 1864 and lived in Bedford ever since. Survived by husband and children: Charles W Cessna of Decatur IL; Mrs AJ Allison and Miss Joy Cessna of Bedford; Mrs ------? CONROY 14 Nov 1902 Miss Jennie Conroy, daughter of Mr & Mrs Peter Conroy of Eckhart and Mr William McGowen of Johnstown married on Thursday (13 Nov) at St Michael's Catholic Church, by Rev. SJ Clark. CRAWFORD 04 Jun 1902 Miss Annie Crawford, daughter of Mr & Mrs Jack Crawford of Frostburg and Mr Harry Young of Pittsburgh, formerly of Frostburg married Monday (21 Jun) at home of the brides parents. CREUTZBURG 29 Apr 1902 Orphan's Court Cases- Henry Creutzburg, guardian of John Preston of Allegany County settled his 3rd account and an order of allowance was passed thereon. CREUTZBURG 17 Dec 1902 Miss Gertrude Novella, daughter of Mr & Mrs Henry Creutzburg of Barton and Mr P Clarence Barnes, a son of Mr GW Barnes, were married at the home of the bride yesterday. Mr & Mrs Barnes left on a bridal tour and will be "at home" in Barton after Jan 1 , 1903. CREUTZBURG 17 Oct 1902 Mrs Daniel James died at Barton at 6:30 o'clock yesterday, aged 76 years. The deceased came from England in 1867 and is survived by a daughter and a son: Mrs Henry Creutzburg and Mr Isaac Cooper, both from Barton. DAVIS 06 Aug 1902 Mrs John Davis died yesterday at Flintstone. The only daughter of Mr & Mrs George Edward Robinette, she is survived by her parents, husband, 4 sons, and 1 daughter, the wife of Squire FR Wilson. The funeral is from the home with burial in the IOOF cemetery. DELANEY 04 Mar 1902 Mr Patrick Delaney died Friday evening (Feb 28). Mr Delaney was in his 87th year ,being a resident of this country after landing in New Jersey in 1849, where he resided until 1855, when moved to Cokeyard in Vale Summitt and lived until his death. He is survived by a large family, all being married except Patrick Delaney; Mrs Michael Higgins and Mrs Thomas Stapleton of Vale Summitt; Mrs John Carter of Hoffman Mines; and William, Thomas and Patrick of Cokeyard; and also 42 grandchildren. Burial in St Michaels Cemetery, Frostburg. DELANEY 19 Mar 1902 Mrs Patrick Delaney died at her residence in Vale Summitt on Thursday (9 Mar) morning, aged 80 years. Her husband Patrick Delaney was buried about 4 weeks ago. The surviving children are: Messers, Thomas, William, and patrick Delaney; and Mesdammes, Michael Higgins, John Carter, and Thomas Stapleton; all of Vale Summitt. Interment will be in St Michaels Cemetery. DRAKE 20 Feb 1902 Mrs John H Drake, wife of Dr. Drake, died at her home on Cemetery Hill in Frostburg yesterday of dropsy and heart failure after 3 weeks in bed. She was a daughter of the late Morris Winebrenner and born in Allegany County 52 years ago, residing near Frostburg all her life. Surviving are Dr Drake, 3 sons, Dave, Howard Shaffer, and Carl Drake- all of Frostburg. The funeral is Friday from the residence with interment in Porters Cemetery. DYCHE 03 Mar 1902 Mr William Dyche, aged 76 years, died tragically at his home 46 Madison Street, shortly after midnight by falling down stairs after retiring early to bed. It is presumed that he lost his balance while groping in the darkness for a drink. His death was due to a broken neck. He is survived by a widow and 7 children; William B., Henry, Mrs Emma J Thumel and Miss Virgie Dyche all of Cumberland; Mrs Sophia Cage of Brunswick MD; and Mrs Anna Wolfe of Martinsburg WV. The deceased moved to Cumberland from Doe Gully Tunnel WV in Morgan County where the body will be interred. ENGLE 13 Dec 1902 Henry Engle Sr., of Borden Shaft, died at home of Bright's disease at the home of son Andrew on Thursday (11 Dec) morning, aged 80 years. He was born in Germany on 12 Aug 1822, came to the US in 1853, residing in or around Frostburg all of the time. He was a hotel keeper in Clarysville between 1869-1875. He served as a teamster in the Civil War. He is survived by a wife, and these children: William of Myersdale; Edward of Elk Lick; Hildebert of Corrigansville; Mrs AR Whitacre of Washington DC; George of Barton; Andrew of Pompey Shaft; and Henry of Frostburg. Funeral services at the German Evangelical Church. FAIRVIEW CHURCH 19 May 1902 Fairview MP Church, 2 miles west of Flintstone, re- dedicated the building to the worship of Almighty God. The church was originally built 1849 during the pastorate of Drs David Wilson and John Murray, both still living. David L Rice of Martins Mountain was present today and also at the dedication of the old church. The church is a beautiful brick structure with metal ceilings and papered walls. The altar and seats are hard wood finish. It is estimated that 1000 people were present. FLETCHER 30 Jul 1902 William Fletcher Jr, son of William Fletcher, a prominent farmer near Pratt MD and Miss Jennie Baxter, both 19 years, were married by Rev. John Bennett of Artemas PA. GERLACH 01 Jul 1902 Mr John Gerlach died at his home on Frost Avenue last night, aged 63 years. He was stricken with a severe attack of heart trouble three weeks ago from which he did not recover. Surviving are his wife and two sons; Charles of Washington DC; and John of Buffalo NY and Philippine Islands. Interment in Allegany Cemetery. GILLUM 02 Dec 1902 Mrs Cora Gillum, wife of Joshua B Gillum died on Wednesday (4 Dec) at Keyser WV from typhoid fever. She was about 35 years of age and is survived ny her husband and 4 children. She was a daughter of Marion Zembower. Her remains were interred in Fellowship Cemetery in the Cumberland Valley. GRUBER On March 10, Mr HW Gruber of this city received a telegram stating that his cousin, Mr Joseph Gruber had died at his home at Los Angeles CA. Yesterday, Mr Gruber received a telegram that the widow of the deceased had died on Saturday (22 Mar). GRUBER 10 Mar 1902 Mr Jacob Gruber, former citizen of Cumberland, died in Los Angeles CA, aged 64 years. He went from here to Iowa and became engaged in the manufacture of guns, becoming very wealthy. He retired and spent his life at a fruit farm, where he died. He is survived by a wife and a cousin, WH Gruber of Cumberland. HAMILTON 07 May 1902 and some days following. The trial of Oliver Weston Hamilton. Miss Phoebe Wigfield, daughter of Deborah Wigfield of Town Creek and Mr OW Hamilton were married 15 Sep 1901 at Franklin under duress and at the point of a gun and remained together from Tuesday to Friday when he took her home to Town Creek. She kept quiet under threat of death by Mr Hamilton but finally confided to her mother. Charges and a divorce is their demand. Mr Hamilton is son of Riley Hamilton and is aged 29 years old claims she went along agreeably. HARDMAN 27 Dec 1902 Mr CN Hardman of Yale PA, 8 miles from the city, found unconscious at his home on the floor of the barn with a badly bruised head. He was in the process of throwing hay from the hay loft in the barn when he suddenly fell to the first floor striking his head on a wagon wheel. He is now in critical condition. He is the son in law of Mrs EC Brasheaers, Pennsylvania Avenue. HARTSOCK 22 Dec 1902 Mr Calvin Hartsock, aged about 45 years, a businessman in Brunswick, was struck and killed by a train on Saturday (20Dec) night, about 1 mile west of Brunswick. He leaves a wife and 4 children. He is a native of Cumberland. HARTSOCK 19 May 1902 William Hartsock, 23, son of Capt. HH Hartsock, died at his parents home at 89 Decatur St. He was employed as a clerk at the First National Bank until his lingering illness. Besides his father, the brothers and sisters that survive are: Mrs William Cook; Mary, Clara, and Howard P Hartsock. Burial in Rose Hill. HAZEN MD 29 Aug 1902 Mr HE Lashlett of Australia says there is gold on Evitts Mountain in the neighborhood of Hazen MD. Mr Lashlett is a mining prospector and stopped off to visit his nephew, Mr Henry W Parker and niece, Mrs A A Roeder of this city. While at Hazen, he went up on the mountain and found gold and says it is possible that at a depth of 30 feet, it would develop into paying quantities. ( 5 paragraphs story). HILL 15 Aug 1902 Mrs Emily P Hill died at Chattanooga TN from complications of diseases. She is survived by 4 sons, Walter T and Ralph H Hill of Cumberland; Herbert A Hill of Astoria OH; and William J Hill of Chattanooga TN. Mrs Hill was a native of England, born in Birmingham on 10 May 1832, came to the US in 1854 with her late husband James T Hill. Her maiden name was Emily Ponsford The funeral is from the Emmanuel PE Church on Sunday. HINKLE 21 Jan 1902 Mr Morgan Hinkle , a prominent farmer living near the Six Mile House on the Baltimore Pike, yesterday was dragging logs down a hill near his barn when he got on the lower side of one of the logs which started to roll and was crushed instantly to his death. His skull was crushed and blood oozed from his ears indicating a crushed skull and assorted internal injuries. He was the son of Thomas Hinkle, a merchant of Paw Paw WV and conducted his farm. A wife and two children survive. Burial at Mt Pleasant Church, services being conducted by Rev Blubaker. HINKLE 06 Oct 1902 "Doc" Hinkle, a well known farmer and horseman residing out on the Baltimore Pike, was taken in on Saturday night by a man whom he took out of the wet night and now mourns the loss of $101. Mr Hinkle met the man in front of a Baltimore Street Hotel who was intoxicated and hunting for a bed. It was raining and Mr Hinkle pitied the man and allowed him to share his room. The stranger registered as "Hoback" and he awakened first and went through Hinkle's clothing before skipping. HUGHES 23 Apr 1902 Mrs George Hughes, died last night at the home of a son RA Hughes, near the Six Mile House on the Baltimore Pike, aged 95 years. She was thrice married and leaves one other son, Mr WHH Murray. The funeral is at the Pleasant Grove Church, Rev Mr Gross officiating. JENKINS 10 Jan 1902 Mr Edward Jenkins of Mt Savage MD, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore in his 66th year. He was in ill health for some months, finally going to Johns Hopkins for treatment in December. He was born in Berryville, Clarke Co, VA in 1836. Her served in the Army of the Confederacy in the Civil War as a member of Co A; 6th VA Cavalry, Fitzhugh Lee's Division, Lomax's Brigade, Stewart's Cavalry and was a lieutenant in the Virginia State Militia at the execution of John Brown. Later, he was a coach builder of the C & P Railroad Co. His wife, Miss Lucy Ellen Mason of Clarke Co, VA died 6 years ago. The following children survive: John E Jenkins, William Jenkins, Daniel T Jenkins, and Mrs HC Haus- all of Mt Savage. The funeral is at the ME Church of Mt Savage, Rev Mr Thomas officiating. JONES 07 Jul 1902 Mrs E Jennie Jones, wife of the late Justice JW Jones, died suddenly at her home on Allegany Street, Cumberland, aged 61 years, death due to heart disease. She was the daughter of the late Mr Benjamin Kegg, who died a year ago at an advanced age. Her husband, the Justice of the peace in the county for many years, died March 1901. Survived by children: Miss Alma of Washington DC; Miss Cora Jones and Mrs Jessie Porter of Cumberland; Messers, Frederick Jones in the west; Malcolm, Donald, Benjamin, and William Jones of Cumberland; and also these brothers and sisters; Mrs H Virgil Porter of Cumberland; Mrs John Weir of Paw Paw WV; Mrs Margaret Metzler of Rainsburg PA; and Mr James M Kegg of Bedford PA. KEAN 23 Jan 1902 Mr Patrick Kean died this morning at home 27 Beall St, aged 89 years. He had lived in Cumberland for 60 years running a line of boats on the C & O canal. At one time he was a member of the police force. Eight of nine children survive: Mrs Thomas Morrissey of Little Washington PA; Mrs Edward O'Neal; Mrs Frank Fisher; Mrs Philip Thomas; John; James; and Patrick Kean all of this city; and George Kean of Magnolia WV. Also survived by his wife who is a sister to Luke and James Mulligan and a brother Anthony Kean. KLOSTERMAN 12 Feb 1902 The marriage of Miss Mary Nellie Klosterman, the oldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Thomas Klosterman and Mr Robert Winifred Shuck of Cresaptown, Rev Father Benedict of St Ambrose Catholic Church presiding. A brother Mr T Klosterman and Miss Carrie E Shuck attended. KREUTZBURG 22 May 1902 Mrs Lena Kreutzburg (sp. ?) left Tuesday for Emmanus MO, near St Louis where she will enter the sanitarium for the treatment of a nervous condition. Mrs Kreutzburg is a daughter of Mr Voghtman of Grant St and has been affected with a nervous condition for about ten years. This is the second time she has been to this institution , having been there 7 years ago, leaving entirely recovered, in which state she remained until recently when it was found that her actions had returned. Messers Tullman and Sturm are the chief managers of this institution, which is the only one of its kind in America. It belongs to the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North America. Mrs Kreutzburg has many friends and relatives here who are very much grieved to learn of her affliction, and hope she may return her soon, entirely recovered. LAFFERTY 09 May 1902 Mrs Rebecca Lafferty, wife of the late Isaac Lafferty died this morning at the home of her son-in-law Joseph J Matt, 199 N Centre St, aged 81 years, 3 months, 5 days. She leaves 2 daughters; Mrs Charles Healey of Galesburg IL and Mrs Joseph Matt, this city. Mrs Lafferty was a daughter of Mr Moses McKenzie of Cresaptown and also leaves 2 sisters, Misses Lizzie and Emily and a brother Mr Charles McKenzie of Berwick PA. Burial and funeral at Sts Peter&Paul. LOGSDON 04 Aug 1902 Mrs Samuel L Logsdon Sr died yesterday of Bright's disease, aged 58 years. Surviving children are; Owen, Samuel, James, Enoch, and Mrs Joseph A Campbell. Burial is tomorrow from the residence in Eckhart with burial in the family plot at Porters Cemetery. McELFISH 02 Apr 1902 Miss Mary Myrtle McElfish, daughter of Mr Luther McElfish of Rush and Mr Hervey Guy Willison were married in Rush last night. The groom is a son of Mr John B Willison of Flintstone. A brother, Mr Maurice Willison of Taylor Street attended the wedding. McELFISH 08 Apr 1902 Mr Charles V McElfish of Rush and Miss Estelle Virginia Gassman, daughter of Mr & Mrs George W Gassman of 124 Maryland Ave were married at 7:00 AM this morning. McELFISH 16 Oct 1902 Mr Perry McElfish of Rush and Miss Wealthy Bucy of Flintstone were married at the home of the bride last evening. McKENZIE 02 Jul 1902 Mrs Mary McKenzie, wife of Henry McKenzie of Narrows Park, died suddenly last night returning from a visit to her sister. She had been complaining for some months and had been spending the days with her sister, Mrs O'Baker who lives 50 yards away. When returning, she was taken with hemorrhage, dying very suddenly. She was 29 years of age and leaves a husband and 2 little children. The funeral is tomorrow at Sts. Peter & Pauls. METZ 01 Apr 1902 Marriage of Mr James T Robertson, a son of Mr David Robertson of Ocean and Miss Lillian Metz, a daughter of Mr & Mrs Samuel E Metz took place in the parsonage of German Lutheran Church, Rev Braren officiated. Miss Sallie Metz attended her sister. MIDDLETON 01 Feb 1902 Mr RP Middleton, aged 50 years, a farmer residing at Springfield WV, about 15 miles east of Cumberland, committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth at noon today. He was well-to-do at one time but was despondent over losses in business ventures. A wife and 3 children survive. MILLER 05 May 1902 A court case-- Benjamin R Miller of Barton married Mary C Miller, a ½ niece and at the licence swearing, claimed they were 2nd cousins. They were married 8 Nov 1899, and are currently living at New Church VA. After the marriage, a warrant was sworn out but they fled. A year later, they returned and the indictment was served. They now have a child of the marriage. His defense is that Mary's father John E Miller is not really the father of Mary, but that she was begotten by a neighbor man, who admits fathering her. The trial continues. MILLER 24 Sep 1902 The funeral of Mrs Catherine Miller, relict of the late Christopher Miller, took place this afternoon at the German Lutheran Church, Reb Mr Braren, officiating. Interment is in the German Lutheran Cemetery. Mr CW Miller of New Castle PA and Mr HC Miller of Myersdale are sons of the deceased. Mrs Miller was 75 years of age. MINNICKS 07 Jul 1902 Mrs Elizabeth Minnicks, aged 51 years, died Saturday (5 Jul) at her home on Paca Street of paralysis. She is survived by 5 children; Edward, George, Harry, Martha, and carrie. Burial in Rose Hill. MOORE 12 May 1902 The town of Barton is excited as Thomas Gardner, the mine boss at Potomac Little Vein was killed and Louis Meyer was wounded by James Sephus "Sefe" Moore, who escaped into the mountains and is being pursued by a posse with instructions to shoot on sight. Articles on the capture and trial follow for some time. "In 1886, James Cephas "Ceph" Moore wrote a valuable manuscript about local family history in the Barton area. The manuscript is entitled "Moore History Written by Ceph Moore in 1886." It was transcribed by a Mrs. Howell, and I understand that a copy is in the Grantsville library. Ceph was born in 1844, son of Levi Moore and Nancy Ann (Broadwater)." Walt Warnick NAVE 06 Oct 1902 Mrs Rena Nave, wife of Mr Elza Nave, a prominent dairyman, died at Flock's Mill yesterday. Mrs Nave had been ill for some time, her death primarily due to a cancer growth on her face. Mrs Nave was a Miss Rena Laney and 4 sisters and a brother survive: Mrs Conda Wilson; Mrs Daniel Bretz; Miss Lavia Laney; and Mrs Etta Madden-all of Cumberland and Mr WW Laney of Braddock Pa. Her five children are: Harry, Lessa, Claude, Mrs Ella Wilson, and Miss Mamie. The funeral is from St Paul Lutheran Church and burial in Rose Hill. NORRIS 13 Nov 1902 Thomas H Norris, aged 75 years, formerly the Justice of the Peace of Little Orleans, died in Baltimore. He lived at Little orleans until a few years ago when his wife anc child were murdered and robbed and the house burned with their bodies. Mr Norris is survived by 5 children: Edward E Norris of Shinnston WV; George W Norris of Little Orleans; Filmore Norris of Centre Junction IA; Mrs Douglas Quenzei and Mrs ME McCusker of Baltimore. PRYLE 16 Apr 1902 Mrs John J Green returned home from Vale Summitt yesterday where she attended the funeral of her mother Mrs Catherine Pryle. Mrs Pryle was 64 years old and is survived by 4 sons; Frank, Thomas, Michael, and Patrick Pryle; and 2 daughters, Mrs John Green and Mrs Schyteer of Cumberland. The deceased has lived at Vale Summitt for 25 years. Funeral is held at St Michaels Catholic Church and burial in the adjoining cemetery. RECKLEY 29 Nov 1902 Jacob J Reckley, a prominent farmer, died near Paw Paw, aged 68 years. DA Foard, pastor. RESLEY 14 Apr 1902 Col. Horace Resley died at the Western Maryland Hospital yesterday after an illness of several weeks, aged 87 years. His demise came from a fall on the ice at his home on Harrison Street. He was born in Hancock and came to Cumberland in 1847. In 1840, Col. Resley married Sarah Mae Lanahan, a daughter of Mr & Mrs John Lanahan of Franklin County PA, and she died in 1872. Two sons survive; John M and William H Resley. The only daughter, Isabel died last February. His father, John Resley served as a lieutenant in the war of 1812 under Capt. Stevens. His mother, Mary Sniveley is a native of PA and descendant of former governor Peter Merkle. She died at age 74. Two of their children survive; George and Cara Ann of Fulton Co PA. Funeral on Friday with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. (Full page column of data). RESLEY 10 Feb 1902 Miss Isabel Maclanahan Resley, the only daughter of Col. Horace Resley, died this morning at the residence on Harrison St. She had been ill with inflammatory rheumatism for over 3 weeks, but her death was unexpected. Miss Resley was 51 years of age and was the mainstay of the household following the death of her mother many years ago. Her father, Col Horace Resley is lying in another room of the home in a most critical condition, his mind being perfectly blank. He had fallen 3 weeks ago and is to be 87 years of age on the 2nd day of March. She leaves John M Resley and another brother Mr William Resley who is afflicted also with inflammatory rheumatism and is barely able to stand. RESLEY 12 Feb 1902 The funeral of Miss Isabel M Resley was held today from the residence on Harrison Street, Rev Dr Moffet officiating with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. RESLEY 22 Jul 1902 Mrs Resley, widow of Major James Resley, died Sunday (20 Jul) at her home a few miles west of Hancock MD, aged 70 years. Her husband was a distinguished Union soldier. Surviving children are: John B Resley of North Mechanic St, Cumberland; Horace Resley of Ohio; Miss Annie Resley of Cincinnati OH; and Alonzo Resley and Miss Ellen Resley at home. RICE 15 Feb 1902 Mrs Frank Rice died yesterday at her home near this city, aged 74 years, She leaves 8 children; Mrs Jacob Wolford; Mrs Walter Fisher; Miss Elizabeth Rice; and Messers, Theodore, Moses, Leonard, Charles, and William Rice. The funeral is at Centenary Church where Rev Mr Bean and Rev Mr Anthony will officiate. RICE 23 Jan 1902 Mr John Rice of Little Valley Road, 5 miles out of town, died yesterday at the residence of Mr William Valentine of North Harrison St whom he had been visiting for a few days. He leaves one son, Tolbert who resides on the farm. Burial at Zion Church on the Bedford Road. RILEY 11 Feb 1902 [John/James -unsure of correct name] J. HS Riley. one of the oldest trainmen of the area, died last midnight at home of a son, Harry Riley at "Willow Brook" near the Baltimore Pike in the area of Lindnerville. He was 70 years of age and for 30 years was chief dispatcher for the B & O. In early life, he lost a leg and then was placed in charge of the telegraph office at the Queen City station. Later, he was placed in charge of the Rawlings office where he suffered paralysis three months ago that resulted in his death. He leaves 6 grown children. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery. ROBERTSON 20 Feb 1902 Mrs David Robertson of Ocean, died in Dr Finnig's Infirmary in Baltimore yesterday morning, aged 54 years, after an illness of several weeks. She was a sister of the late James B Thomas, superintendent of Consolidation Coal Co of Eckhart and of Mrs GW Griffin of Lonaconing. She is survived by a husband and the following children: John of Baltimore; James T of Consolidation in Frostburg; and Claude, William , and Miss Bessie all of Ocean. The body arrived on the No. 5 and taken to Ocean on the C & P train. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in Allegany Cemetery in Frostburg. ROBINETTE 30 Oct 1902 Ada Marian Robinette, the oldest daughter of William M Robinette of Harrison St married last night to Mr Arthur Peaslee Perry of Russellville KY at the ME Church, 5 Centre St, Rev. SK Cox officiated. ROBINSON 07 Feb 1902 The farmhouse of Mr WP Robinson, located on the Maryland side of the river opposite the Magnolia Station of the B & O, 35 miles east of Cumberland, was destroyed by fire this morning and four of the children, Pearl, Owen, Effie, and Joseph, ranging in age from 4-10 years were cremated. Mr & Mrs Robinson barely escaped the inferno by jumping out of an upstairs window after finding the children's room completely enveloped in flames. They were then barefooted and nearly froze to death before they could be cared for by neighbors. RYLAND 30 Dec 1902 Mr William Ryland, a well known brick layer of this city, met with an accident as he was struck by a train in a tunnel near Clarksburg WV, where he had been working, and resulted in his death at 6:00 this morning. Mr Ryland was about 40 years old and lived on Bedford Street. Besides his wife and his son and parents Mr & Mrs Jackson Ryland, he is survived by these brothers and sisters; Messers Norman, James, Floyd, and Mrs Hast of Greene Street; and Mrs James Little and Miss Effie Ryland. Burial at St Patricks. SHAW 23 Dec 1902 Will of Major Alexander Shaw valued at $2 million, filed for probate, with John K Shaw and John K Shaw Jr, brother and nephew as executors. SHOBER 14 Feb 1902 Mrs Lavinia Shober, who died Wednesday (12 Feb) was the wife of William Shober, a well known conductor of George's Creek & Cumberland Railroad and a sister of Mrs Henry Rauschlein of Cumberland and of Mrs William Madore of Pittsburgh. She was the daughter of John Meister of Pittsburgh, a former baker in this city. The following children survive: Walter Shober of Mt Pleasant PA; John and Robert Shober of Cumberland; Albert Shober of Pittsburgh; William Shober of New Orleans and Miss Mamie D Shober and Mrs Jessie Hamilton of Cumberland. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church, Rev Mr Braren officiating with burial in the cemetery connected with the church. SHRIVER 03 Oct 1902 Mr Anthony Shriver died at his home on Springdale Street today, aged 62 years. About 10 days ago he took ill from typhoid fever, getting along fairly well until today when he took a turn for the worse. He was a son of the late Henry Shriver. Four brothers survive; Henry, Martin, and Frank in the west, and John in Tennessee. About 37 years ago he married Miss Mary Kerber who survives him with 5 children and 2 adopted children: Joseph, Edward, Annie, William, Gertrude, Elizabeth, and John. He lived in Cumberland all of his life and for the past 8 years, he conducted a general merchandise business on Springdale St. He served 4 years in McNeil's 7th VA Cavalry. STALLINGS 24 Sep 1902 Mr Wilbur Batie Stallings, a popular B&O brakeman and Miss Frances Elizabeth Haldeman of Glenn St were married last night at the parsonage of the ME Churhc by Rev. William A Melvin. TWIGG 15 Dec 1902 Harry Twigg, employed as a flagman on the B & O fell from his train in Hyndman on Saturday evening (13 Dec) receiving serious injuries. Both of his legs were so badly crushed that the surgeons decided to perform a double amputation at the Western Mary land Hospital where he was taken. He is 22 years of age and a son of Mr Bernard Twigg, a driver for Clark's Furniture Store. Drs. Wailes, Claybrook, Spear and Twigg operated. A second operation was performed to amputate one leg above the knee. A third operation was performed to completely remove the leg. 22 Dec 1902 After suffering over 2 weeks from injuries received at Hyndman while flagging for the B & O, Harry Twigg died on Saturday (20 Dec) at the Western Maryland Hospital. He was 22 years old and a son of Mr Bernard A Twigg, residing on the Baltimore Pike and besides his father, he is survived by his mother, and the following brothers and sisters: Ensley Twigg of Wheeling WV; Charles, Edward, William, and Mrs Robert T West and Leona Twigg of Cumberland. Services at the 1st Baptist Church and burial in the Greenmount Cemetery. WIGFIELD 29 Apr 1902 Licence to Marry- Emory Marshall Wigfield and Annie R Powers, both of Frostburg. WILKINSON 08 May 1902 Bedford PA- One of the largest gatherings of Chaneysville for the funeral of Mrs Solomon Wilkinson. On Sunday, while her husband was at church, Mrs Wilkinson went to the barn and suicided by hanging . She fastened an old bridle rein to a ladder and after getting onto a milk stool, put her head through a noose in the strap and strangled herself. She was 67 years old and it is supposed her mind was affected by neuralgia. She was a member of the German Lutheran Church and leaves a husband but no children. WILKINSON 14 May 1902 Mr george C Wilkinson died last night at his home on Knobley St, aged 36 years. He leaves a wife, a daughter, and 2 sisters; Mrs Thompson Wickard and Mrs John Fey, both of this city and a brother, John also of this city. The funeral is Friday from the residence. WILLISON 07 Jul 1902 Mrs Lelia M Willison, wife of Mr Carl C Willison of N Centre Street died only 24 hours after the death of her infant. She was 19 years old and the daughter of Mr & Mrs HM Hite. The funeral is tomorrow from the home. WILLISON 14 Nov 1902 Mr Lawrence Willison, son of Mr AJ Willison and Miss Dora Evans, daughter of Mrs Ruth Evans and the late William Evans were married Thursday (13 Nov) at the parsonage of the ME Church of Frostburg, by Rev. JWR Sumwalt. WINEBRENNER 30 Jan 1902 Marriage licence- Laurence W Winebrenner of Mt Savage and Florence Blanche Martin of Wellersburg PA. WOLFORD 06 May 1902 Mrs Perry Wolford died yesterday at Flintstone, aged 37 years. She is survived by her husband and 2 boys, aged 11 and 8. The funeral is Wednesday at Flintstone with interment at the family graveyard at Murleys's Branch. Mrs Wolford was a Miss Wilson prior to her marriage. ZEMBOWER 09 Aug 1902 George Zembower died yesterday at the home of his brother, WP Zembower near Fellowship in the Cumberland Valley, aged 49 years. He was a son to Mr Adam Zembower, who with his 9 sons attracted much attention some years ago when they all voted for grover Cleveland at the same time at the same voting place. Surviving brothers are; Emmanuel of Cumberland; Wilson of a place 4 miles east of Cumberland; Marion, Josiah, Frank, and William P Zembower. The funeral is tomorrow. ZIMMERLY 21 Feb 1902 Miss Eva May Zimmerly, daughter of John W Zimmerly and Mr William G Rees, son of Mr John B Rees were married Tuesday evening (18 Feb) at the ME Church parsonage in Frostburg, Rev.
