ANDREWS 05 Jan 1909 Mr George Andrews died this morning at his residence in Moscow, aged about 50 years. Mr Andrews was ill about a year after leading a retired life for some time. His wife who survives was a Miss Shaw, a daughter of Mr John Shaw. The following children also survive: Howard Andrews of Lonaconing; William Osborne Andrews of Moscow; Joseph Andrews of Pittsburg; George, Calvin, Aleda, and Dora all of Moscow. Sisters and brothers are: Mrs Calvin Shockey of McComas WV; Mrs Peter Wilson of Cumberland; Mrs EM Lewis of Cumberland; Mrs Florence Summerville of Barton; Joseph Andrew of Barton. The late Mrs John W Young was a sister. ASH 16 Nov 1909 Mrs Mary Ann Ash, aged 89 years, died this morning at 2: 00 o'clock at her home 4 miles North of Chaneysville. She is the widow of the late Owen Ash and her maiden name was Roberts and was raised near Flintstone. The funeral is tomorrow with interment on the family farm, and Rev. Halpenny of Flintstone will preach the funeral. She was a aunt of Ed F Ash and Luther Ash and sisters, of Cumberland and Mrs John W Boor. ATHEY 15 Dec 1909 Sherman Athey, a native of Green Ridge, this county, died last night in a Philadelphia hospital of tuberculosis. He leaves a widow and two children. His father, James Athey, survived and residing on the homestead on Green Ridge. He also leaves two brothers, French Athey, of South Cumberland and Jesse Athey of Green Ridge; and two sisters, Mrs Dr. Harbaugh of Oldtown MD; and Mrs Columbus Alderton of Baltimore Avenue, this city. Mr Athey had lived for 20 years at Camden NJ where he was treasurer of Von Skiver Furniture Co. He was about 45 years of age. BACKHAUS 27 Oct 1909 Mrs Ana Backhaus, a highly esteemed German resident , died at 7:30 o'clock last night at her home, 171 Walnut St, aged 71 years. The deceased finished her supper and had gone to her room to read her Bible. A few minutes later, a daughter upon entering her apartment, was shocked to find her mother prostrate and lifeless upon the floor. Apoplexy had given an immediate summons to eternity. The deceased is survived by 5 sons and daughters, viz.: Charles and Conrad Backhaus; Mrs Anna Shober; Mrs Bertha Bronsky; and Miss Sophia Backhaus. While the date of the funeral for Mrs Backhaus has not been definitely determined, it will occur at the family residence with Rev. Braren officiating and interment will be in the German Lutheran Cemetery. BARNES 13 Oct 1909 John Barnes, an aged citizen of about 80 years, living with his son-in-law Amos Cunrod near Rawlings, was stricken with paralysis on Monday (11 Oct) and his life is despaired of. Mr Barnes is a native of Piney Creek PA. BOTTENFIELD 17 Sep 1909 Emory E Bottenfield, aged 33 years, a merchant of Flintstone, this county, died at his house this morning due to complications of diseases of the lungs and kidneys. He leaves a wife and 3 sons, ranging from 5 to 8 years of age. The funeral is at the Flintstone ME Church on Sunday with interment in the IOOF cemetery. BOWMAN 19 Aapr 1909 Truman Bowman, aged 62 years of age, died yesterday at the county home after several weeks of illness of Brights Disease and general debility. A native of Artemas, Bedford County, PA and well known in Flintstone area. Surviving are eight children, all grown. His wife died two months ago. Burial from the Mt Pleasant Church. BRANT 23 Jul 1909 Benton Brant, a Union veteran and well known citizen of this county, died at his home, 23 Union Street, at 2:30 today after a brief illness of complications, aged 68 years. He was born near Hazen and for many years was a teamster and farmer and of late years was employed with the Queen City Transfer Co. A wife and 4 children; Mrs Myrtle Van Horn; Miss Nellie Brant; Charles Brant; and Henry Brant, all residents of this city, survive. The funeral is Sunday at Centenary Church and burial in the cemetery connected to the church. BROADWATER 11 Sep 1909 Broadwater reunion in Merrill MD (6 paragraphs); More in 13 Sep 1909 edition. BROTEMARKLE 24 Feb. 1909 Mr Daniel W Brotemarkle died at Macomb Missouri on 19 Feb., aged 61 years. He is survived by a wife, 5 children and 2 grand children. Mrs Thomas Gurley, of this city is a sister and also surviving are brothers; Milton Brotemarkle-Hale PA; David Brotemarkle of Cumberland Valley five miles north of Cumberland; and Dr. Clinton Brotemarkle of Salisbury MD. He was well known among older residents of Cumberland and went west 35 years ago. Burial is in Macomb. BUCY 30 Jan 1909 Denton B Bucy, aged 69 years, died at his home 49 South St at 9:15 last night. He had been ill over a year from stroke of paralysis, from which he did not recover. Born at Town Creek, 6 miles South of Flintstone on the "Old Denton Bucy Farm", where he had lived before moving into the city about eight years ago. He married 3 thimes and is survived by his wife, Mrs Mary Bucy and children; Mrs GF Strickman; Mrs Olive Gazenhauser; Mrs George Twigg; Mrs Parker Huff; Mrs Asa Irons, all of this city; also, Naomi Bucy and Susie Bucy and Carl, Welty, Gilbert, and James Bucy. Family burial grounds, Town Creek. CARDER 18 Mar 1909 Mrs Virginia Blackewll Carder, aged 38 years, wife of Dr. George L Carder, died last night at Allegany Hospital of a mastoid abcess. She had been ill for four weeks and was a daughter of Mr & Mrs Thomas Callen, formerly of Little Orleans in this county, now of Narrows Park near Cumberland. Mrs Carder had been married 11 years and had a son, Robert Callen Carder. Besides her husband, son, and parents, she is survived by two brothers, George S Callen-merchant of Duffields WV, and Charles T Callen-merchant of Little Orleans, and one sister, Mrs Guy Breton Leroux-Douglas GA. A brother, Harry W Callen died two years ago and one sister, Miss Mary L Callen was drowned in the Potomac River at Little Orleans. Mrs Carder, on the maternal side, was a grand- daughter of the late Col Jacob Snively, a leading citizen of Hancock a century ago. Rites and burial at St Thomas Church-Hancock. CLITES 09 Oct 1909 Jacob S Clites, a native of Hazen, son of the late John Clites, employed as a freight conductor on the Pennsylvania Rail Road, was killed at Douglas PA above Pittsburgh on Thursday (07 Oct) in a rear-end collision. He is survived by a wife and 5 children, three married and two at home. A brother, D Clarence Clites lives near Hazen. Burial is at Union Grove near Hazen in a family lot. CUMBERLAND 20 Oct 1909 Wellington Glass Works, formerly the Cumberland Glass Co., in the Narrows, will reopen after being closed for 5 years. New and more modern equipment has been installed. Large article. DAVIS 05 Oct 1909 Mrs Christopher Davis, aged 61 years, died at her home on Bowery St-Frostburg this morning. She was a native of Geumenden, Frankenburg, Germany but resided most of her life in this county. She had suffered from dropsy and Brights disease for the past 3 years. Her husband and the following children survive: August H Davis, Christopher D Davis, John Davis, Misses Mabel Davis and Louisa Davis-all of Frostburg; Mrs Maggie Liller and Mrs Lillie Wagner of Keyser WV. George Krause of Frostburg and August Krause of Cumberland are brothers. Funeral is from the residence and burial in the German Lutheran cemetery .. DEAN 07 Dec 1909 Mrs Francis Dean, aged 67 years, a lifelong resident of this vicinity, died at her home at Frost Mines. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs William Koontz and James L Dean - of Frostburg; Mrs Joseph Crawford, John S Dean, and Joseph L Dean - of Frost Mines. Interment in Allegany Cemetery. DICKEN 05 Nov 1909 Solomon Dicken died Monday (01 Nov) at 1:00 o'clock at his home near the Bethel Church in Cumberland Valley at the advanced age of 86 years. His funeral was Wednesday at Bethel with interment in the Bethel Cemetery. Mr Dicken was one of the oldest residents of the Valley and owned his house where he resided. He had been twice married, his second wife being Lucy Vickroy, a sister of Mrs Araminta Sanders, wife of Charles Sanders of Cumberland. His wife survives, but no children. Solomon Dicken was a brother of the late John Dicken of the Cumberland Valley and a cousin of Martin L Dicken at Dicken's Mill. His other brothers are Henry, Thomas, and Moses Dicken, all deceased. Henry Dicken, who lives in Oklahoma, may be still living but, if so, he is about 90 years old. ELLIOTT 03 Feb 1909 Mt Savage- Mr James Elliott, who moved here from Cumberland Valley two years ago, died Tuesday morning (2 Feb) at 5 o'clock sitting in his chair, as was his custom in the mornings. He is survived by his wife and eight children: William Elliott-Pueblo CO; Mrs bessie Hardinger-Utah; Joseph and Charlie Elliott of Elk Garden; Frank of Eckhart; Mrs John Bridges; Clifford and James of Hyndman. The funeral is from the ME Church. FLETCHER 23 Mar 1909 Mrs Clara Fletcher, wife of Theodore Fletcher, died Friday (19 Mar) at her home near Piney grove PA, and was buried Sunday at Piney Grove Church. She was a sister-in-law of Mr Daniel A Fletcher, of this city. GEZENHAUSER 30 Oct 1909 Frederick Gezenhauser, a well known B & O yard brakeman, died this morning at his home, 48 South St at 10:00 o'clock after a brief illness of a complication of diseases, aged 30 years. The deceased was unmarried and is survived by his father, Mr Henry Gezenhauser, brother Henry and sisters, Mrs Annie Lueck and Mrs Michael Balko, all of this city. The funeral is at St Peter's & Paul. HARDMAN 05 Oct 1909 Mrs Raymond Hardman returned home to Morgantown WV after a weeks visit here as a guest of her parents Mr & Mrs O Henschke-Hyndman PA. HARDMAN 13 Apr 1909 Miss Carrie Hardman of Baltimore spent Easter holidays with her parents, Mr & Mrs Levi Hardman and family of Bedford Road. HARDMAN 14 Aug 1909 Among the deeds recorded at Bedford this week, Deed from WJ Elliott, by the administrator, to Millard F Hardman, in Cumberland Valley, $6,025. Mr Hardman has been blind since a boy of 6 years old and educated in Philadelphia school for the blind, became a teacher, learned a trade also, and saved his money. The farm lays seven miles out Bedford road from Cumberland. HENDRICKSON 05 Oct 1909 Mrs Amanda Hendrickson, wife of Mr Thornton Hendrickson, a widely known farmer living on the Baltimore Pike at Pleasant Grove, 4 ½ miles from the city, died at the family home last evening, aged 72 years. The deceased was a Gurley prior to her marriage and was a sister of Mr TJ Gurley, the N Centre St grocer; and Mrs Martin L Dicken and Mrs Leonard Rice of Centenary. Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 children, Mr Charles Hendrickson at the home place; and Mrs Harry Nave at Folcks Mill. The funeral is tomorrow from Pleasant Grove Church, Rev. Edward Hayes officiating. HENDRICKSON 09 Jun 1909 Mrs John Cessna died last night at midnight in her home in Ridgeley after an illness of tuberculosis at age 43. She leaves her husband and 2 children, Ralph and Ray Cessna. The deceased was a daughter of Samuel Hendrickson of the Cumberland Valley who has made his home with his daughter for several years. HINKLE 12 Feb 1909 Mr Harry C Oglebay of Waverly Terrace received word today of the death of his aunt, Mrs Frances Hinkle Pratt at Holden Missouri, who was the daughter of the late Jesse Hinkle of this county. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs Charles King-Seattle WA; and 2 brothers and 2 sisters; Rev. Richard Hinkle- York PA; Rev. George Hinkle- Sacramento CA; Mrs EH Crawford-Buffalo NY; and Mrs EJ Elbin-Flintstone. HINKLE 18 Jan 1909 William M Hinkle, telegraph operator for the B & O at Evitts Creek tower, had his life was crushed out at Virginia Avenue grade crossing in an accident last night. Mr Hinkle was standing at the grade crossing by a westbound engine, when an eastbound engine backed up , knocking him down, and passed over him. He lived at 45 Valley St, leaves a widow and 5 small children. He was 35 years of age and well known selling barber supplies and also had worked the barber trade. He also leaves his widowed mother at Mt Harmon, two brothers Frank and George at McKeesport; a brother Clarence, working at the Co-Op Supply Co , and a sisterMrs Charles Gurley, 3 miles east of Cumberland. St Patricks cemetery. HUFF 30 Jul 1909 William F Huff, a retired farmer, died yesterday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs Zella Erricson, on the Oldtown Road of paralysis, aged 61 years. The funeral is at the home and the body will be taken to the old family home tomorrow on Town Creek where interment will be made. The following children survive: Jasper L Huff; Benjamin P Huff; and William M Huff-all of this city; and Mrs Zella Erricson; Mrs Edith Stinebaugh; and Mrs Dora Richardson-all of this city .. LASHLEY 08 Jan 1909 Mr Matthew lashley, aged 24 years, died at his home in Mt Savage this morning of lung trouble. He was in good health until 2 years ago when he caught a severe cold. He is survived by his parents , eight brothers, and four sisters; Warren, Milton, Amos, Benjamin, Charles, Robert, Ralph, and Wayne; Mrs William Creager, Mrs Finley Bennett, Miss Jennie and Miss Ethel. McELFISH 15 Apr 1909 Miss Mayme McElfish, daughter of Mr & Mrs Philip H McElfish, Six Mile House on the Baltimore Pike married last evening to Mr Edward J Vogel, son of Mr & Mrs Henry Vogel of this city at the German Lutheran Church, Rev John S Braren, presiding. McELFISH 19 Apr 1909 Mr Perry L McElfish died Friday (16 Apr) at Brookport Illinois, aged 45 years. The body will be returned to Cumberland to the home of a brother, MF McElfish on Virginia Ave in South Cumberland. The funeral will be from the house with interment in the IOOF cemetery, Flintstone. MEANS 05 Jan 1909 Charles Means, aged 64 years, died Jan 1 at his home near Mattie, Bedford County, PA. His funeral took place at Mt Pleasant Church, Rev James Logue, officiating. His widow, Miss Catherine Mearkle , a daughter of Bartley Mearkle and several grown children survive. His father, Charles Means Sr. and mother Miss Margaret Hoopengardner of Rays Hill raised a family of 13 children, namely: Harvey, Horatio, David, Charles, Henry of Clearfield, Nathan, Caroline, Emma, Lucy Ann, Chloe, and Elizabeth of Clearfield, and twins, Judah- wife of Clay Fletcher- Brownsville, and Ellen-wife of John Sponsler-Altoona. MEANS 16 Jul 1909 Mrs Carrie Means, wife of David F Means, a well known stock dealer of Everett PA. died Sunday (11 Jul) at Everett, aged 66 years. Her maiden name was Howsare. She was raised in Beans Cove PA and was a sister to Leonard Howsare. Frank Means, a local barber on Mechanic Street is a son. Another son, George and a daughter and 3 brothers, Leonard, Simon, and Samuel Howsare and a sister, Mrs Daniel Bussard survive-all near Everett. MEANS 29 Jan 1909 Henry Means, age 59, died in Clearfield PA and was buried Monday of last week (18 Jan) in the Catholic Cemetery in Bedford. He was a brother of Charles Means who died on new Years Day in Mattie, Bedford County, PA. Three sisters survive, one of whom is Betty Means who once lived in Cumberland. MIDDLETON 06 Aug 1909 Genevieve, infant daughter of Mr & Mrs BF Middleton of Twiggtown MD, who had been sick for the past 2 months, died Thursday (05 Aug) evening at 5 o'clock, aged 4 months. The funeral is Saturday with interment in the family burial ground near Twiggtown. MILLER 26 Feb. 1909 Christian Miller, aged about 75 years, died Sunday night (21 Feb.) at his home in Robinsonville, Bedford County. His funeral took place on Wednesday at Fairview Church, Rev. Rinehart officiating. MOUNTAIN 09 Mar 1909 Mrs Mary Mountain, aged 72, died last Tuesday (2 Mar) at her home near Artemas , Bedford County, PA. She was the widow of the late Aaron Mountain and leaves 6 children, one of whom is Mr Jacob Mountain of Davis WV. OSTER 11 Jun 1909 William Oster, a son of Sperry Oster of Cumberland Valley and a son in law of William B Hite of the valley, died suddenly at his home in Johnstown. His body will likely be brought home for burial tomorrow. O'NEAL 11 Jun 1909 Harry L O'Neal, the infant son of Mr & Mrs George O'Neal of Linderville, died from whooping cough last evening. The funeral will take place 2:00 o'clock this afternoon from the residence with interment in Bowden's cemetery on the Baltimore Pike. Several other members of the family are ill with the same disease. O'NEAL 30 Jun 1909 Mrs Rhoda O'Neal, wife of RR O'Neal, a farmer living on Martin's Mountain, died last evening after several weeks of illness, aged 37 years. The deceased was a daughter of Moses Wigfield prior to her marriage. Pleasant Grove cemetery. PERDEW 28 Dec 1909 Mr & Mrs Elijah Perdew yesterday celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Beans Cove PA. They were married 27 Dec 1859, at the home of the late Isaac Wilson, near Flintstone by Rev. Charles McClure. Mrs Perdew was a Wilson prior to her marriage. The following children attended: Frank A Perdew, a well known attorney of Cumberland; John M Perdew of Cumberland; Emory C Perdew, Thomas Carl Perdew, Mrs Estella P Perdew and Luther Perdew- all living on the home place. Mr Perdew has the following brothers and sisters living: Mrs Rebecca Bennett of Hewitt PA; George M Perdew of Cumberland; Neri Perdew of Oregon; William Perdew of Idaho; Mrs Mary Robinson of Clear Ridge PA; and Mrs Alice O'Neill of Cumberland. Mrs Perdew has the following brothers and sisters still living: Thomas Wilson of Rush MD; Mrs Clay Fletcher of Beaver City Nebraska; Adolphus Wilson of Johnstown PA; Harry Wilson of Keyser WV; Miss Laura Wilson and Mrs Cora Wilson of Flintstone; Mrs Agnes Miller of Tennessee. RAWLINGS 06 Dec 1909 Miss Grace Harriet Rawlings, a daughter of James W and Margaret Rawlings, died at her home, 20 Orchard St last night. Miss Rawlings was 19 years old. Her illness covered four months. Her only brother is Jacob W Rawlings and her sisters are; Misses, Mary, Edith, Lillie, and Cora Rawlings. Her father is a well known engineer on the Western Maryland railroad. She was a member of the St Paul Lutheran Church. RAWLINGS 08 Mar 1909 Mrs Lena Rawlings, resident of this city married last night to Mr George W Danner, also of Cumberland. The bride was given away by her son, Mr J Price Rawlings. They will reside on Independence Street. REDINGER 15 Jan 1909 Miss Rhoda Redinger's clothes caught fire at her home in Chaneysville and she died on Wednesday, age 16 years. Mr Thomas Redinger, her father , was also burned trying to save her. RICE 06 May 1909 James Upton Rice of Cumberland Valley, celebrates his 86 th birthday [Photo]. A personal sketch abour his life; born 06 May 1823 on Williams Road; married in 1860 to Miss Caroline Growden who was a daughter of Rev. John Growden of Cumberland Valley; has 7 children three of which are deceased; Robert H Rice-Cumberland Valley; John T Rice of South Cumberland; Mrs Sarah Beale of Hanover St, Cumberland; and Mrs Annie Nicewarmer of Cumberland Valley. RINE 15 May 1909 Mrs Hester Rine [Photo], now in her 92 nd year, the sole remaining link to the War of 1812, and widow of Daniel Rine, who served as a private during the War of 1812, is still living and residing near Paw Paw, and is now a house guest of her daughter, Mrs George Steckman, 111 Maryland Avenue, this city. Mrs Rine was, before her marriage, Miss Hester Davis, and married in 1835 to Daniel Rine, a veteran of the War of 1812, at the "Old Brick House" on the Baltimore Pike.Mr Rine, at the close of the war, came to this vacinity and married Miss Davis and they afterward made their home near Paw Paw at what was known as the Rine Tavern, at the seven mile house; it being seven miles from Little Orleans and seven miles from Oldtown. The old home place is still being kept up by one of the sons of this union, nine children being born as follows: Elizabeth, wife of Emanuel Robey of near Paw Paw; John, deceased; Daniel Rine of Berkeley Springs; Valeria, wife of Sandford Flour of Brunswick; Harriett, wife of James Anderson of Kansas; and Clara, wife of George Steckman of this city where the venerable lady is visiting. Mrs Rine's husband died in 1869 and she was granted a pension under the act of 1878, in the year 1880 of $8 per month until increased by Congress to $12 a month. Up until three years ago, there were three on the pension rolls for that war, but at the present time, Mrs Rine is the sole representative. ROBINETTE 22 Jan 1909 Mr Rogert Robinette, a son of Mr & Mrs JC Robinette, died at the home of his parents near Rush on Murleys Branch, this county, early this morning, aged about 23 years. ROBOSSON 28 May 1909 Dr. Thomas Perry Robosson died this morning at his home in Flintstone, aged 75 years. He was paralyzed on May 30 of last year and has not been able to leave his bedroom since that date. Mr Robosson was born in Flintstone where he has lived practically all of his life except for the last year and a half when he conducted a drug store on Baltimore Street of this city which he gave up after the affliction which resulted in his death. He was a graduate of Gettysburg PA College and of Baltimore Medical University. He practiced his profession for 50 years in this area. He is survived by a wife and the following children: Mrs JB Humbird, WF Robosson and Reginald P Robosson -all of this city; Mrs Marshall Wolford and Charles Robesson of Flintstone; Mrs Llewellyn Bridges of Hancock; and Mrs Minnie Perry and Misses Rose and Grace Robesson who reside in the home place. Burial in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. SHAW 13 Apr 1909 Mrs George W Shaw, aged about 75 years, died yesterday at her residence at Grantsville after a long illness. She resided in this area about 40 years. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Messers, Columbus H and Joseph Shaw of Salisbury PA; Dr William P Shaw of Berlin PA; Miss Fannie of Salisbury; Gurnie at home; Misses, Lula M and J Tibbetts at home. SHAW 28 Apr 1909 Frostburg- Mr George H Shaw received information from Mr John Calderhead of Boxley Arkansas, his brother-in-law, that his wife, Mrs Sarah Calderhead and daughter Jeannette had been struck and killed by lightning on 19 April. Mr & Mrs Claderhead, who were once residents of this place, went west to Arkansas 22 years ago where they are engaged in farming. Mrs Calderhead who was killed was the mother of Robert Calderhead, a motorman on the Westernport electric railway and a daughter of Mrs Jeannette Shaw, a highly respected lady of this place. George H Shaw and Douglas Shaw of this place are brothers, and Mrs TM Price, a sister of Mrs Claderhead. Mr Calderhead was also injured when his wife and daughter were killed. Another daughter was slightly injured. SHERTZER 03 Sep 1909 Mrs Matilda Shertzer, the widow of Andrew Shertzer, shot herself this morning shortly before 11:00 in the left breast just over the heart with a 32-caliber revolver. Ever since the death of her husband 2 years ago, Mrs Shertzer has more or less despondent but for the last few months, more noticeably so. A niece and nephew live with her, the children of Mr Joseph Taylor. Mrs Shertzer was about 55 years old and was a Miss Freithof before her marriage. Mr Joseph Freithof of this city is a brother. SMITH 02 Dec 1909 Mrs Nettie Smith, wife of Edward Smith, a farmer living on the Baltimore Pike, eight miles beyond the city, died at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon after a brief illness, aged 40 years. Besides her husband, a family of eight children survive. The deceased was a Bowden prior to her marriage and a daughter of Mr Boyd Bowden of this county and was an estimable Christian lady. The funeral will be Sunday at 1:00 o'clock from Pleasant grove Church with interment in the cemetery connected with the church, Rev. Bond, officiating. SMITH 12 Aug 1909 McKee's Rocks PA- Mr HC Smith, a motorman for 10 years on the Coreopolis Division of the Pittsburgh Railway Co, died of inflicted wounds on 27 Mar 1909 before little son Richard Loring Smith, and was laid to rest on 05 Aug 1909. SMITH 20 Sep 1909 Mrs Laura W Sliger, wife of George E Sliger, died at her home in Lancaster PA on Thursday (16 Sep), aged 46 years. She leaves behind her husband, 11 children, some of whom are grown. Her funeral was today at the Greenmount Cemetery in Lancaster. Mrs Sliger and her husband were both natives of Cumberland Valley, moving only 3 years ago. Her maiden name was Smith. Survived by brother, Reuben Smith from the valley, now living with his son Dr. Harry E Smith, Frederick MD; Joseph Smith and William C Smith of the valley; and sisters, Mrs Harvey Elder, Mrs Henry Fisher, and Mrs Levi Hardman -all of the Valley. The home place is about 2 miles above Centreville. SMITH 21 Jul 1909 Lawrence Smith, 14 year old son of James C Smith, had a fatal accident yesterday near his home at Green Ridge, east of Flintstone. He and an older brother were hauling water from Fifteen Mile Creek in a wagon and on the way home, while going downhill, Lawrence attempted to jump off the wagon landing under it and the wheels of the wagon passed over him crushing him badly and he lived only 3/4 of an hour. SMOUSE 10 May 1909 Mrs Elizabeth Smouse, aged 84 years, widow of the late HD Smouse, died at home at Washington Iowa on May 05 from infirmities of old age. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Brotemarkle of Little Valley and had many friedns in this area . She married Henry Daniel Smouse on 05 Dec 1845 and went to Washington Iowa in 1867. Mr Smouse died on 27 April 1899 , aged 72 years. They had eight children; Leonard and Winfield Smouse; Mrs Amanda Conrad; Mrs Mary V Anderson; Mrs Sara Ellen Dewey -all of Washington Iowa; and Mrs Rosa V Stevens of Pawhuska Okla. There are two deceased children, Arnold and Newton K Smouse. Mrs Smouse had a brother, Samuel Brotemarkle of Kansas City MO; two sisters, Mrs Daniel Smouse of Mt Pleasant Iowa and Mrs Hattie U Hite of Cumberland Valley. One brother, Henry Brotemarkle died a year ago. SNYDER 27 Mar 1909 John Fletcher Snyder, a brother of DW Snyder of the "Alleganian", died last night at 8:00 at his home near Mattie, Bedford County, Pa, 14 miles south of Everett, aged 69 years. She was ill forsome time due to dropsy and an enlarged heart. His wife, Barbara Ellen Mearkle survives him along withseven sons, all single, two married sons, and one son at home. Also, his sister, Mrs Caroline Barkman, wifeof Daniel Barkman, brothers, David Snyder of Clearville; Baltzer Snyder of Bedford; and Daniel Snyder of Cumberland. He was the son of the late Philip and Mary Ann Fletcher Snyder of Clear Ridge. Burial at Stevens Chapel. Mr Wheeler is employed for Long Island Railroad Company of NY where he and his wife will locate. TEWELL 13 Oct 1909 Moses Tewell died at Waco Nebraska on September 28 of paralysis. The deceased was raised near Chaneysville, but had lived in the west for about 20 years. He has several relatives and acquaintances near Cumberland. THOMAS 07 May 1909 William Thomas of Frostburg died yesterday of pneumonia after an illness of one week, aged 78 years. He is an old time resident of Frostburg, living here before the war of 1861-1865, where he served for 3 years in the 2nd Maryland Regiment. He was in the shoe business until 25 years ago when he retired. He is survived by his wife and these children: Frank Thomas and William Thomas of Pennsylvania; Mrs Harry Keller, Mrs Nimrod Meyers, and Miss Nan Thomas- all of Frostburg; and one daughter of Baltimore. WILSON 07 Jan 1909 Mr Eli Wilson, aged 63 years, a sucessful farmer, died last night at his home in Rush, near Flintstone. He had been ill for some time with creeping paralysis. His wife survives was a Miss Growden of Cumberland Valley. Also surviving are 2 sons and 2 daughters, living at the home place. He was a member of the Flintstone IOOF who is in charge of the funeral arrangements. WILSON 08 Jul 1909 Miss Carrie Elizabeth Wilson, a daughter of Mrs Charles Wilson of Flintstone married yesterday afternoon at the home of the mother to Mr Edgar S Holtzman, a member of the Burch & Holtzman's on Virginia Avenue. After a honneymoon to Eastern cities, they will reside on Pennsylvania Avenue. WINTERS 16 Sep 1909 Mrs John Winters died in the Presbyterian Hospital at Allegheny PA last Tuesday (14 Sep). Mrs Winters was a Miss Janet Little Stewart before her marriage and was born in Lonaconing, 29 years ago. Mrs Winters leaves her husband and 2 small children; Stewart and Marjorie and her mother who lives in the Winters home in Allegheny. Mrs Winters is survived by these brothers and sisters: Mrs John Pearbaugh-Glencoe PA; Mrs Francis Mullen-Lonaconing MD; Misses Grace and Marian Stewart of Pittsburgh.
