BARNES 23 Apr 1912 Miss Olie Etta Barnes, dau of Mr Frank J Barnes of Silver Mills PA married to Mr John Edgar Sheetz, son of Mr & Mrs Robert Nelson Sheetz of Mt Savage MD. BENNETT 23 Feb.. 1912 Mr George Bennett, aged 56 years, died at 7:45 AM yesterday at home in Wrights Crossings, after a protracted illness of dropsy. The deceased was a coal miner by occupation and lived here for many years, having been born in PA. The survivors are his wife, 6 daughters and 4 sons as follows; Mrs Jessie Beaman, Mrs Janet Blubaugh, Mrs Minnie Filer, Mrs Pearl Dudley, and Misses Marion Bennett and Hazel Bennett; and Benjamin Bennett, Porter Bennett, George Bennett, and William Bennett; all of this county. Burial in Allegany Cemetery. BOOR 29 Feb. 1912 Mrs Jacob Boor, aged 70 years, died this morning at home on the Baltimore Pike, about 4 miles from Cumberland. She had been ailing for the past year and was seriously ill the past 6 months. Her sister, Mrs Nancy Sweibart of Philadelphia has been at her bedside during her illness. The deceased was a daughter of Rev Matthias Dean of Murleys Branch, well known in the rural areas of Cumberland. The deceased was of especially charitable nature and endeared herself to the entire community. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs Boyd Smith of Cumberland and one brother George W Dean of Cumberland. Burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. BROWNING 22 Oct 1912 Personals- Mrs Albert Browning of Independence Street has announced the wedding of her son, Mr Louis Browning to Miss Iva Patterson of LaVale, the ceremony to take place tomorrow at 8:30 o'clock. CREUTZBURG 01 Aug 1912 Miss Carrie Creutzburg, age 56, a dressmaker and milliner died yesterday at 7:00 at Allegany Hospital. She was operated upon several weeks ago. Miss Creutzburg is survived by her brother with whom she lived and two sisters, Mrs Hannah Shaw of Barton and Mrs Emma Lutz of Midland. Services are Saturday afternoon with interment in the Morrison Cemetery, beside her mother and father. CREUTZBURG 28 Mar 1912 Mr Frederick Kreutzburg was yesterday appointed a notary public for Allegany County by Gov. Goldsboro. CUMBERLAND 06 Apr 1912 Mr John Snyder has purchased the Pennsylvania Hotel, 81- 83 N Mechanic St, from Mrs Elizabeth Bortz for the purchase price of $24,000. DAVIS 29 Oct 1912 Mrs Alice C Davis, wife of William E Davis, a farmer living about 6 miles east of Cumberland on the Baltimore Pike, died this morning. She was 46 years old. Burial at North Branch. DOWDEN 06 May 1912 The 88th birthday party for George F Dowden [Photo] . FLETCHER 06 Sep 1912 Francis Fletcher, aged 55 years, a son of Baltzer Fletcher and a cousin of DW Snyder of the Alleganian, died at Chapman's Run, Bedford County yesterday morning after an illness of 2 weeks of smothering of the heart. He leaves a widow and 5 children. He was a farmer and lived on the Old Home place. GARLAND 24 Jan 1912 Uriah Garland, died Saturday (20 Jan) at his home near Artemas, Bedford County after only one weeks illness. His death was unexpected and quite a shock to the neighborhood. He was a prominent farmer and well thought of. He was a brother to Rev WC Garland, of Browning St, Cumberland. He was about 40 years old and leaves a widow and 2 children. GROSS 17 Apr 1912 Fostoria OH- Mr George H Gross, who for many years conducted the Six Mile House of the Baltimore Pike, died last night in his home in Fostoria OH. He was 74 years old and his wife was a sister to the late Achael Willison and Hanson Willison of Cumberland and uncle to Mr Jasper Willison. He was a brother to Captain Richard T Gross who was sheriff of Allegany County in 1872 and a veteran of the Civil War. Another brother still resides on the old Gross home on the Baltimore Pike. Burial in Fostoria OH. GRUBER 24 Apr 1912 Gomer L Gruber, aged 29 years, badly injured and died in Johnstown Pa a few hours after an accident. Mrs Katie Cook and Mrs JM Shertzer, relatives of the deceased, attended the funeral there yesterday. Mrs Conrad Zimmerman and Henry W Gruber of this town are also related. The deceased attempted to board a Pennsylvania RR train for Altoona where he expected to secure employment. It is believed he lost his hand hold and fell beneath the train. A man walking along the track after the train had passed noted his body and called for assistance, but he was so badly injured, only temporary relief could be rendered. He is survived by his father and mother and one brother, Charles E Gruber of Johnstown. HENDRICKSON 29 Nov 1912 Otus I Hendrickson died last night in the hospital at Hagerstown from injuries received in a train wreck on the Western Maryland RR at Pen Mar. Mr Hendrickson was the engineer of the eastbound #204 which ran into the westbound #203 train. JD Burbage of Hagerstown was caught under his engine and instantly killed. Hendrickson resided in Hagerstown and leaves a wife and several children. He was a son of Orion P Hendrickson, who was killed in a wreck on the Norfolk & Western seven years ago. He was a nephew of Summerfield, Milton, and Finley C Hendrickson of this county and also of Mrs Victoria Willison of Hazen. The funeral will be held at Hagerstown. A brother, Howard Arthur Hendrickson was one of the ill fated victims who went down with the recent Titanic disaster. He was an employee on the big ship. HOOK 15 Oct 1912 William Pullard bought an old graveyard near Walnut Street known as "Hooks Grave Yard", to build houses upon. This was at one time the property of John Snowden Hook, purchased in the latter 17th century. This farm extended from Bedford Street to Wills Mountain and a portion was used as a grave yard for family, and later for others. In 1844, the property was divided among the children. (article contained 6 paragraphs). LASHLEY 24 Jan 1912 Mrs Alcinda Lashley, widow of Warren Lashley, died near Artemas on Monday night (22 Jan). She leaves a family of children, her husband having died a few weeks ago. Her father James Northcraft, died only about a month ago. She leaves 3 sisters, Miss Tabitha Northcraft at Artemas; Mrs George Hoopengardner of Buck Valley; and Mrs WB Lashley of Virginia Ave, Cumberland. McELFISH 03 Apr 1912 Marriage Licences- Gernia Haskell McElfish and Etta May Willison; both of Flintstone. McELFISH 26 Oct 1912 Struck on the top of the head by a brick which fell from the top of a new smokestack being erected at the B & O roundhouse in South Cumberland , Mr WS McElfish, of 157 Maryland Avenue was instantly killed about 11 :00 this morning. Mr McElfish, who was a well driller, was using his engine to hoist bricks to the bricklayers, a distance of 125 feet. Several persons saw the bricks falling and jumped out of the way in time, but their warnings were not heard in time. Mr McElfish was married and had one child, Miss Leah McElfish. His widow was a Miss Hinkle, a daughter of Summerfield Hinkle. Also, he leaves a brother, Perry G McElfish and two sisters, Clara McElfish and Mrs Clay Wilson, wife of a city policeman. Mr McElfish was a son of Mr & Mrs Upton McElfish of Murleys' Branch. He was a member of Trinity ME Church South . Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. MILLER 07 Oct 1912 Melvin Miller, the 5 year old son of Mr & Mrs John Miller of Lindnerville, died this morning. Death was due to meningitis. The funeral will take place tomorrow with burial in Beans Cove. MILLER 15 May 1912 The flood on Sunday evening struck Emanuel Miller near the Six Mile House on the Baltimore Pike hard. His work shop with all of his carpenter tools, his meat house with all of his cured meats, his poultry house with all of his poultry, went down the stream together which is a considerable loss, besides the damage to his fields and crops. MILLER 20 Nov 1912 Miss Edith Miller, 22 years old daughter of John Miller, died at her home on the Baltimore Pike, about 2 miles from the city. The funeral will take place at 2:00 at Beans Cove. MOUNTAIN 31 Oct 1912 Personals- Mr Tobias Mountain moved today from Clearville to East Cumberland. NYCUM 23 Feb. 1912 John Watson Nycum, aged 67 years, died at his home south of Clearville, Bedford County on Tuesday 20 Feb. 1912. He was an uncle of Simon Nycum of this city, who was killed in a ditch on Bedford St about a year ago. Mr Nycum was a member of 107th PAV in the Civil War. PARKER 12 Oct 1912 The beginning of Parker Mills of Frostburg by Harry AV Parker from Portsmouth VA. Mrs Parker is a native of Frostburg and a daughter of John L Porter. He has leased the old Electric Light building. PORTER 03 Sep 1912 Frostburg - Correspondent, Glissen T Porter responds to an article in the Baltimore Sun dated 10 Aug 1912, concerning the Porters of Frostburg area, including their immigration. RICE 18 Mar 1912 Mrs Margaret Rice, aged 90 years, died at her home on Irons Mt, yesterday at 4:00 after a short illness. Death was due to the infirmities of old age, although Mrs Rice was active to go about until a few weeks ago. She was widely known throughout the farming district in which she resided. Her husband, Alfred Rice died about 4 years ago. She is survived by the following children; George Rice-South Cumberland; Miss Annie Huff-Twiggtown; Mr Harry Rice-at home; Sanford Rice, residing near the home place; Agnes E Rice of Ridgeley; Mrs Bedford George of South Cumberland and 15 grandchildren. The funeral and burial at the M. E. Church. ROBINETTE 29 Apr 1912 Harmon Robinette, aged about 50? years, died today at Western Maryland Hospital. The funeral is Wednesday at Pratt MD, six miles below Flintstone on the Baltimore Pike. A son of George Wesley Robinette and a brother of Lawrence Robinette and Scott Robinette of this city. SHAW 05 Mar 1912 Mr George Shaw Dead..Passed Away At His Home In Grantsville This Morning George Shaw, widely known along George's Creek region, died this morning at his home in Grantsville, following a long illness. He was 84 years old and for many years a resident of that vacinity. The deceased was born in Barton MD, where he grew to manhood. He then removed to Lonaconing and from that place went to Grantsville where he was a respected and highly respected citizen. He is survived by Mr Gurnice Shaw, Miss Lula Shaw, and Mr James Tibbits Shaw at home; two sons, Dr Shaw of Berlin PA and Joseph Shaw of Elklick; and one daughter Miss Fannie Shaw of Elklick. The deceased was also an uncle of Mrs WF Kontner, Water St, this city and Mrs William Thomas of Eckhart Flats, Frostburg. Funeral and interment at Grantsville. SHERTZER 22 Aug 1912 Mrs Dorcas Shertzer, wife of John Shertzer, died at the home of a son in Westernport, where she had been visiting since Friday. The body was brought to her home in Corrigansville. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. SILLS 14 Jun 1912 Mrs Catherine Sills, widow of John A Sills died in her home on Bedford St, aged 70 years. She had been confined to her bed for three months. Her husband, a well known Union Veteran of the Civil War died in April 1910. She is survived by 3 sons and 3 daughters; J Walter Sills; Henry E Sills; A Reginald Sills; Mrs Bertha N Woolard, wife of TE Woolard; Mrs Cora A Woods, wife of Robert Woods; Miss Effiel Sills. Mrs Sills was a Miss Reckley , a native of Oldtown and resident of Cumberland for the past 50 years. Also survived by; 2 brothers, Roman Reckley and William Reckley of Oldtown; 4 sisters, Miss Effie Reckley who lives in the Sills home; Mrs Malinda Hartley of Oldtown; Mrs Mary Arnold of Bloomington IL; Mrs Nettie Edwards of Clearfield PA. Burial in the German Cemetery. SMITH 26 Feb. 1912 Lonaconing- Mr Peter Smith, died 10:00 Am Sunday at age of 72 years at his home in Detmold of miners asthma. He was born in Stinston, Scotland in 1840 and came to this county shortly before the War. Mr Smith served in the 194th Reg, PA Inf, during the Civil War. He is survived by a wife, 4 sons, William Smith, Adam Smith, Peter Smith Jr., and James Smith and 2 daughters, Miss Mary Smith and Mrs William Marshall. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. SNIDER 24 Apr 1912 Stephen Snider, aged 78 years, died Sunday (21 Apr) at the home of a daughter Mrs Nora Andrews, at Everett. He leaves a widow who was Miss Margaret Roland of Chaneysville; three sons, Gilbert Snider of Pittsburgh; Grant Snider of Kinsley KS; and Jared Snider near Robinsonville PA; daughters, Mrs Nora Andrews of Everett; Mrs Susan Cooper, near Shreves Chapel and brothers, Nicholas Snider of Calif; and John C Snider, near Shreves Chapel, Bedford County PA. SNYDER 12 Feb 1912 Mrs Ellen Snyder, widow of John F Snyder, near Mattie PA, died today after a lingering illness, age 57 years. The funeral will take place at Stevens Chapel. She leaves 3 grown daughters and 7 sons, also grown. Her husband died 2 years ago. She was a brother to Mr DW Snyder of the Alleganian. SNYDER 23 Feb. 1912 Marriage of Rev Edgar E Snyder, eldest son of ex- county commissioner Baltzer Snyder, near Clearville, Bedford County, and nephew of DW Snyder of Cumberland to Miss Edna Karns, a prominent teacher of Everett PA and a graduate of Shippensburg State Normal School. Rev Snyder is a recent graduate of Lutheran theological Seminary at Gettysburg and has accepted a call at St Matthews Lutheran Church at Harrisburg PA. STALLINGS 14 Nov 1912 Samuel T Stallings, celebrated his 84th birthday at his home, 3 miles west of Spring Gap on 2 Nov 1912. The neighbors went to his farm and had a wood chopping, where they hauled and chopped a considerable pile. Mr Stallings enjoyed the day very much as he could talk as much politics on this, the year of the Democrats. Those present were; Oliver Garland; Price Cecil wife and children; James Dolan; Ross Crabtree wife and children; Robert Athey; Michael C.S. Twigg; William Twigg; Tolbert, Aaron, John, and Raymond Stallings; Mrs Ree Sagle and children; Uncle and Aunt Mollie Stallings. STALLINGS 22 Feb 1912 Mrs Lorena Stallings, aged 36 years, wife of Raymond Stallings, died at her home in Spring Gap this morning. Besides her husband, she is survived by 3 children. The funeral is Sunday in Spring Gap. TWIGG 04 Jun 1912 Howard B Twigg, aged 85 years, died yesterday afternoon of old age. The funeral services at the home a daughter Mrs Alice Golden, of N Centre St, after which interment at North Branch. He was one of Allegany County's soldiers pensioned on $20 a month and he died a day before $60 would be due him. He leaves no widow. The now due pension money will be used for the funeral and other expenses. TWIGG 05 Oct 1912 Mr Dan Twigg received a telegram this afternoon from Davis WV announcing the death of Mrs Mary Twigg, widow of the late Bruce Twigg, who died last week. TWIGG 14 Sep 1912 N. Bruce Twigg, aged about 62 years of age, died Thursday (12 Sep) at Davis WV. His remains were brought to Cumberland and thence to Twiggtown for burial tomorrow. The deceased leaves his wife, 3 sons and 4 daughters. He also leaves 6 brothers; John M Twigg-near Flintstone; Horace R Twigg -Bedford St, Cumberland; Daniel C Twigg -South Cumberland; Charles J Twigg and Austin D Twigg -Twiggtown ; Dr AP Twigg-Flintstone; also 3 sisters, Mrs Elmira Johnson - near the 6 mile house east of Cumberland; Mrs Laura Middleton -Spring Gap; and Mrs Susanna Wilson of Rush MD. TWIGG 20 Mar 1912 Marriage Licences- Alvin Twigg, Spring Gap and Anna Twigg, Keyser WV. TWIGG 23 Oct 1912 Mr Samuel L Twigg of Keyser WV, died here last night. He lived in Cumberland for the past year. Mr Twigg was 62 years old and was well known. His death was caused by heart trouble and a complication of other diseases. Surviving are a widow, Mrs Jane Twigg and 4 children; Mrs Hattie Kimmell and Messers Milton, Vernon, and Thomas Twigg. Burial will be in Keyser WV. TWIGG 24 Dec 1912 There was a Twigg reunion on Red Hill on Sunday. Those present were; Mr & Mrs Mose Twigg and children; Mr & Mrs Noah Twigg and three children; Mr & Mrs John Twigg and 3 children, all of Eckhart Mines; Mr & Mrs John Davies- Frostburg; Mr & Mrs Smith-Clarysville; Mr Elzie Twigg of Mt Savage; Mr Irven Twigg of Vale Summit; Mr & Mrs Brice Twigg-Indianapolis IN; Mr John Clice-Red Hill. TWIGG 30 Nov 1912 Mrs George A Bowman, wife of the well known contractor, died at her home, 140 Maryland Ave, at 11:30 last night, following an illness of four weeks. Death was due to typhoid fever and a complication of diseases. She was 51 years of age. Mrs Bowman, before her marriage, was Miss Almira C Twigg, a daughter of Charles Twigg of Allegany County. She lived in this county all of her life. She was a well known member of Kingsley ME Church. She is survived by her husband, one son Wimmer Bowman; three sisters, Mrs Oliver Wilson; Mrs Mason Crabtree, and Miss Mamie Twigg and a brother, David Twigg. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery. WILLISON 01 Apr 1912 Miss Laura V Willison, daughter of Mr & Mrs HF Willison, residing at the stone bridge on Flintstone, died Sunday at 8:00 of heart trouble. She was 40 years old and an invalid for the past year. She had a lovely disposition and was widely known in the community where she resided. Surviving are her parents and the following brothers and sisters; CW Willison of Flintstone Hardware Co; Mrs PH Hartsock; Mrs CJ Simpson, and Mrs Josephine Henderson-of Cumberland; Miss Blanche Willison of Washington DC. Interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. WILSON 11 Nov 1912 Mrs Sarah Wilson, aged about 70 years, was found dead in her bed this morning at Rush MD. She was the mother of policeman, Henry Clay Wilson of this city and Owen Wilson, who lives in Rush. Mrs Andrew Brotemarkle of Rush is a daughter. She was a kind and gentle lady, having many friends. Her maiden name was Fletcher and she was reared on Clear Ridge. DW Snyder of Paca St is a cousin. The funeral is at Murley Branch ME Church. WILSON 14 Oct 1912 Mrs Judie Wilson, widow of the late Joshua Wilson of Flintstone died this morning at 5:00 o'clock at the home of a son Amon C Wilson on Geothe St, aged 82 years. She was a mother of the former councilman, Conda Wilson of this city. She will be buried in Flintstone. WILSON 26 Dec 1912 Mr Conda Wilson, until lately, the owner of the historic old Tremont Hotel, died at his home on Washington St, shortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon as a result of a stroke of apoplexy. Mr Wilson went to his garage to look over his motor car. His son, William L Wilson, alarmed at his father's absence, found him stretched out on the floor unconscious. Mr Wilson carried him into the house where Dr Claybrooke was called to no avail. Mr Conda Wilson was the son of Joshua Wilson, born in Ohio 60 years ago on the 28th of February next. Surviving are; his wife, formerly Amanda Laney of Centreville PA where they were married; and son William L Wilson, his partner in the Tremont Hotel ; two sisters, Mrs Perrin of near Flintstone; Mrs McElfish of Mary Street; one brother, Amon Wilson of Decatur Street; and these 1st cousins; Harvey Wilson, former States Attorney; Austin A Wilson and Mr Mose Wilson, all of this county. From Ohio, he removed to Flintstone until April 1890, when he bought the old Tremont Hotel on S Mechanic Street from Col. Thomas B Davis of Keyser WV. He conducted this successfully until this past summer when it was sold to the Western Maryland RR, and he purchased the old Robbins home on Washington St, where he has lived since July. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. WILSON 27 Apr 1912 William A Wilson, aged about 41 years, a native of Flintstone, died on Thursday (25 Apr) at McDonaldstown, Somerset Co, PA. For many years he was a sufferer of Brights disease. He is survived by his mother, Mrs Annie E Wilson of Fulton St; brothers, John F Wilson and Herbert W Wilson of Cumberland; Mrs Hannah Hardman of South Cumberland; Mrs Frank Valentine-Evitts Creek; Mrs Emma Ward of Dan's Run and Mrs Gertrude Kenney of Williamsport PA.
