She was the oldest of a family of seven children. She is survived by husband, David Barkman and 3 sons, V.E.P. Barkman, superintendent of Bedford County Schools; Herman Barkman; and Robert Barkman and one daughter, Mrs Dessie Mundweiler; three brothers, David and Baltzer Snyder -near Clearville; and DW Snyder of Cumberland. She was a member of the reformed church. BARNES 12 Apr 1913 Charles W Barnes Sr, 60 years of age, a farmer near Green Ridge, died last night at the Western Maryland Hospital from injuries sustained over 1 month ago, in having been struck by a helper engine on the Doe Gully grade of the B & O RR. He is survived by his wife and one son, Edward and 5 daughters; Mrs Lewis Eemler and Misses Ruth and Bertha Barnes-Hagerstown ; and Misses Viola and Theodosia Barnes-at home; 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Mr Barnes lived at Green Ridge all of his life. Some time ago, he sold his farm to Fred Mertens & Sons. BOETTNER 04 Nov 1913 The body of Mrs Catherine Boettner, was brought here from Albany NY to the home of her nephew, Henry J Boettner, of East Union St and thence to Salem Reformed Church where the funeral was held. She died Saturday (01 Nov) at age 62 years of acute diphtheria at the home of a daughter Mrs Frank Baldwin, Albany NY where she went last June for the benefit of her health. Her husband, Jacob Boettner has been deceased for several years. DEREMER 11 Apr 1913 Mrs Elmira Deremer, widow of Jacob Deremer, died at the home of Simon Boor at Mattie, Bedford County, yesterday, aged 83 years. DICKEN 22 Jan 1913 David M Dicken, a prominent fruit grower at Levels, Hampshire Co, WV, died Monday night (20 Jan) at his home, aged about 65 years. He had been ill for some time and had been at Johns Hopkins for treatment only but a few weeks ago. He was a brother to Martin L Dicken Esq. of near Union Grove Campgrounds, who is the only survivor in the family. His father's name was David Dicken. The old homestead was the Dicken farm where the new Evitts Creek dam is being built. He had a brother Milton and two sisters, Mrs Eve Shelby and Mrs Ruth Eastman, all deceased. They lived near Cumberland. Mr Dicken was married to Mary Twigg, a daughter of the late Francis Twigg of Mt Harmon, three miles east of Cumberland, and a sister of Dr WF Twigg, this city. The deceased leaves behind besides his widow, the following children: Alberta, Nevada, Leah, Ruth, Walter, and Bruce. Two of the daughters are married, Alberta and Nevada. The funeral is at the Methodist Episcopal church at Levels of which he had been a life member. FLETCHER 10 Mar 1913 Mrs Elizabeth Hanks, widow of Jason Hanks, and at one time the owner of tanneries at Flintstone and Everett PA, died last night in Everett PA. She had been cared for for many years by a niece, Miss Alice Fletcher, formerly of near Cumberland. She was also an aunt of Mrs William O McElfish and Mr William Fletcher, of Independence Street who will attend the funeral tomorrow in Everett. Mrs E Wenrick of this city is a sister of the deceased and Mr A.L. Elosser of Decatur Street is a brother-in-law. Mr Raymond Fletcher of Bristol VA is a nephew. Also: 21 Mar 1913 Mrs Fletcher left an estate valued at $100.000; 1/4 of which goes to her niece Miss Alice Fletcher who cared for her for many years and who was made sole executrix of the will. FLETCHER 10 Nov 1913 Franklin Frank Fletcher, 61 years old, one of the most prominent attorneys of Bedford county, died Saturday evening ( 8 Nov.) at his apartment in the Arlington Hotel, Bedford PA. He was stricken with paralysis last Tuesday. A son of Daniel and Susan Fletcher of Chapman's Run, Bedford County. A graduate of Millersville State Normal School, he took up law in Lt Gov John M Reynolds office, served 2 terms as district attorney for Bedford County, and was for several years the Democratic committee chairman and also served as president of the Bar Association of Bedford County. At the time of his death he served as president of the Bedford Light & Power Co, which he held since it was organized 24 years ago. He was unmarried and is survived by a brother, John Fletcher, Treasurer of Bedford County, and sisters, Mrs Julia Clabaugh and Mary Fletcher both living in the mansion farm at the head of Chapman's run. The funeral is tomorrow at St Thomas Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. FLETCHER 16 Sep 1913 Mrs Emily Wenrick, 68 years old, died yesterday at 87 Decatur St of heart trouble. She was the last surviving daughter of Mr & Mrs John and Rebecca Fletcher of Flintstone. Her sister, Mary E Hanks, died six months ago in Everett PA and from her, Mrs Wenrick inherited $22,000. She is survived by a huge circle of nephews and nieces. She was a consistent member and attendant of the Methodist Episcopal church until her health failed. FROSTBURG 01 Feb 1913 The cornerstone of the New Miners Hospital at Frostburg is laid, Olin Gerlach Construction Co. HARDMAN 14 Jul 1913 Levi Hardman, aged 75 years old, one of the most prosperous farmers of the Cumberland Valley, died at 2:15 am at his home in the valley, 8 miles north of Cumberland. He was born and raised in the Cumberland Valley and lived over ½ century in his home which he died. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Mary Hardman; ten children, Shannon Hardman -Elkins WV; Millard Hardman- Philadelphia PA; Fred Hardman-Cumberland; Clinton and Raymond Hardman-at home; Mrs Ellsworth Brotemarkle and Mrs Charles Growden-Cumberland Valley; Carrie Hardman-Baltimore MD; Lillie and Alice Hardman -at home. Funeral and burial at Bethel Church-Cumberland valley. HENDRICKSON 10 Mar 1913 Yesterday, at the home of the bride, Mr Thomas R Maloney of Fostoria Oh, was married to Miss Lucy Hendrickson of Pleasant Valley, at the M P Church by Rev Pierpont. The bride is a daughter of Mr JA Hendrickson and a sister of Mrs Claude Mullenax of Cumberland. They will leave for Manitoba Canada, where they will reside. HENDRICKSON 17 Oct 1913 Miss Rebecca Hendrickson died Oct 16 at her home , 78 Bedford Street of a stroke of paralysis following a week of illness. Frequently called "Ree", she was 54 years old. She was a daughter of John NM Hendrickson of Pleasant Valley, but was raised by the late Mr & Mrs Henry Hardman of the Baltimore Pike. By her request, her remains will be buried beside her God parents at the Bethel ME Church, Cumberland Valley. The following brothers and sisters survive; JA Hendrickson-of the old home place, Pleasant Valley; WA Hendrickson-Narrows Park; Mrs John C Robinette-Murleys Branch; Mrs Mollie Stallings and Miss Margaret Hendrickson-Cumberland . HINKLE 22 Jul 1913 Mrs Martha Gross Hinkle, wife of the late Morgan Hinkle, died at his home at six miles east of Cumberland this morning after a 8 week illness. Mrs Hinkle, a 78 years old, is survived by the following: sons, H Fillmore, Zane C, Levi G, and Henry T Hinkle; daughters, Mrs Franklin B Beall and Mrs harry L Bowen- of Clarksburg; 11 grand children and 3 great grand children. She was the oldest daughter of Adolphus H Gross and Catherine Gross. She was born on the adjoining farm where she lived her married life, a life filled with good works and usefulness. She was descended from a pioneer family and associated with the Methodist Church all her life. The funeral is from the homestead and will be buried in a family plot on the farm. HINKLE 30 Aug 1913 Rev. George B Hinkle, a son of the late Jesse Hinkle and a brother of Rev. Richard Hinkle, died on 7 Jul 1913 at Sacramento CA, aged 95 years. Four days prior to his death, his twin sister, Mrs Elizabeth Crawford of Buffalo NY had died. A sister, Mrs Jane Elbin and another brother, Rev. Richard Hinkle of York PA survive. Mr Hinkle was born and raised on a farm 4 miles east of Cumberland on the Baltimore Pike, where Mr Hinkle had lived. DW Beall of Cumberland is a cousin and Harry Howard Oglesby of Cumberland is a nephew. MIDDLETON 30 Dec 1913 HK Middleton, a son of Roads Commissioner BF Middleton, married on Wednesday (17 Dec) to Miss Lola Wilson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada where Mr Middleton has relocated and is in the real estate business. They are visiting Mr & Mrs JD Ross at 5 Weber St. MILLER 09 Jan 1913 Bessie, the six-month old daughter of Mr & Mrs John Miller of the Baltimore Pike, was buried at Beans Cove PA. The infant died on Tuesday afternoon (7 January). O'NEAL 06 Oct 1913 Williamsport MD- William O'Neal, a well known resident of Williamsport, died Saturday night (4 Oct) of throat disease after an illness of several months, aged 67 years. Formerly a boatsman on the C & O canal but now retired. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He leaves a widow, one brother, John O"Neal and one sister, Mrs Annie McDonald-both of Cumberland. O'NEAL 11 Feb 1913 Personnals- Mr & Mrs RH O'Neal and two children left today for St Louis Mich, where Mr O'Neal has bought a farm. Mr GW McFarland of Cumberland Valley PA, who sold his farm to the Evitts Creek Water Company, bought Mr O'Neal's farm on Martin Mountain and has moved in there. ROBINETTE 03 Apr 1913 Idella Robinette, a young bride about 21 years old , wife of George Robinette, died this morning of tuberculosis. Mrs Robinette works at McElfish's meat market, S Cumberland. ROBINSON 21 Sep 1913 Sunday at the family home, Mrs Rebecca Ellen Robinson, aged 69 years, widow of the late William H Robinson, died due to the illness of three weeks duration of paralysis. Funeral will be on Tuesday afternoon. SMITH 28 Feb 1913 Hancock Farmer Loses $1400 Hidden Under His Bed- Levi Smith and his wife live in Whips Cove, three miles west of Hancock, had his house entered while he and his wife were away at a prayer meeting. Sunday when he and his wife returned from attending church, he noticed that the bag was gone. He notified the Hancock authorities and described the money in detail, except he did not know how much money there was as he had not counted it for 4 years. Shortly afterwards, George Decker, Jim Seville, and Charles Hiles were arrested. (7 paragraph article). STALLINGS 11 Feb 1913 Mr Harvey J Stallings, died yesterday afternoon at 3:00 at the home of his brother, Thomas M Stallings, Spring Gap. He was stricken with severe illness last Wednesday. He was 63 years old, a native of the county, being born in the neighborhood of Spring Gap. He had many years of service with the Pennsylvania RR but had retired from the service several years ago. His wife died several years ago and since then had made his home with his brother. He is survived by the following children: Harvey J Stallings-Martinsburg WV; John N Stallings and William B Stallings-McKeesport PA; Mrs Nellie Daniels-Spring Gap; Miss Elizabeth Stallings-Spring Gap; Jessie M Stallings-Baltimore; Robert Stallings and Mrs David A Robb-Cumberland; and brothers and sisters; Thomas M Stallings-Spring Gap; Irving Stallings-Cooks Mills PA; Mrs Robert Cheney- Cumberland; Mrs William B Hubbs and Mrs Veloria Middleton-Elk Garden. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. TWIGG 09 Aug 1913 Mrs Mary Durbin, aged 21 years and wife of Scott Durbin, a bride of last January, died at home of her parents Mr & Mrs Orland Twigg, 40 Independence Street, last night due to Tuberculosis. Besides her husband and parents she is survived by these brothers and sisters; Roman Twigg, Riley E Twigg, George W Twigg, Claude E Twigg, Mrs Rebecca Sowers, Mrs Julie A Leasure; Mrs Matilda Hartman- all of Cumberland; burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. TWIGG 11 Nov 1913 Social Notes- Homer Twigg, son of AD Twigg of Twiggtown and Miss Henrietta Roope were married last Thursday (6 Nov.) at Westminster MD. A large reception was held at the home of the groom. TWIGG 16 Jul 1913 Argyle Twigg, about 70 years old, died at 11:30 o'clock this morning at his home in Twiggtown. The cause of death is stomach trouble. He is survived by 2 children, Mrs Charles Rice and Mrs Thomas Dolan -both near Twiggtown. TWIGG 17 Mar 1913 Mr Andrew S. Twigg died yesterday at his home at 177 Bedford St of a complication of diseases, aged 69 years. The deceased removed to here from Oldtown 2 years ago and lived a retired life. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a farmer prior to moving to Cumberland. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Scott Twigg, salesman of Kamen & Co; Argyle Twigg; Sherman Twigg; George Twigg; John Twigg; Mrs Cora Twigg and Miss Carrie Twigg, all of the city; and Mr Oliver Twigg of Luke MD. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. TWIGG 22 Aug 1913 Mr CC Twigg, of Twiggtown MD, for the past 2 years the football coach at Western Maryland College, Westminster MD has recently accepted a position at a high school of 800 boys at Huntingdon PA and will begin new work in September. WIGFIELD 29 Sep 1913 Walter L Wigfield has been granted a divorce from his wife Christina F Wigfield on statutory grounds. The defendant is a non-resident of the state. WILLISON 08 Jul 1913 Jesse Willison, 70 years of age, died at his home in Ridgeley of paralytic stroke suffered 3 weeks ago. A brother of the late AC Willison-postmaster, and an uncle of Jasper N Willison of Cumberland. He was one of the oldest residents of Cumberland who moved later to Ridgeley WV. He is survived by his wife and the following children: John A Willison of Cumberland; Clifton Willison of Ridgeley WV; Mrs Bessie Flora of Jersey City; and Mrs Madge Lovell; also, a brother, Owen Willison of Paw Paw WV and a sister Mrs Anna Gross of Fostoria OH. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. WILLISON 08 Sep 1913 Ridgeley WV- Mrs Rebecca Willison, age 66 years, wife of Jesse Willison died suddenly on Saturday evening (06 Sep). She lived with her step son, Mr Clifton Willison, Central Avenue since the death of her husband last July. About noon, she was stricken with paralysis on the left side. Dr Cowherd was called and discovered that her condition was critical. She lingered until Saturday evening about 9:00, when death relieved her suffering. Mrs Willison was married twice, her first husband was Mr Robinette and from the union were five children. She has two children from her second marriage.
