Lonaconing, Jan. 25. The condition of Frank Doolan, Jr., 23, who was seriously injured by a Cumberland and Pennsylvania train that killed William Quail Eichhorn, 25, last night, is reported improved today at Miner's Hospital, Frostburg. Doolan and Eichhorn were run down by a coal train at 6:55 p. m. while engaged in a fight on the railroad tracks. Eichhorn died in Miners Hospital, Frostburg, at 11:30 p. m. His right leg was amputated at the hip by Drs. J. G. Cobey and C. D. Stiles, Frostburg. He was also injured internally and was suffering from shock when admitted to the hospital. Doolan suffered a broken hip and a compound fracture of the left leg below the knee; also contused and lacerated wounds on the head. He was attended by Drs. R. C. Diahl, Frostburg and M. J. McDermott, Midland. Engaged in Argument. Both young men were married and had been friends for years. They engaged in an argument while in the gasoline service station operated by George Robinson in Detmold, near the community baseball field, according to State Officer George E. Miller. Later the pair left the station and went on the railroad tracks. "They were scuffling in the center of the track," Officer Miller quoted the engineer, Charles Shaffer, Westernport, as saying, when the engineman noticed them. Shaffer said he immediately applied the emergency brakes but was unable to keep from striking Eichhorn and Doolan. The train was stopped a short distance below where the men were hit. Conductor Adam Zais, Westernport, with other members of the crew and friends of Eichhorn and Doolan who were attracted to the outside of the gas station by the sudden stop of the train, carried the injured men to Robinson's station. Two Eichhorn ambulances were summoned and the two were taken to the hospital. Eichhorn was a son of Mrs. Martha Eichhorn, and the late Gustave Eichhorn, West Main Street, Lonaconing. His father was killed a number of years ago in a mine accident. He was a graduated of Central High School, where he participated in many athletic events. He later was employed at the Celanese Corporation of America at Cumberland and was a full back on the Celanese soccer team. Besides his mother, with whom he resided, he is survived by his widow and a small son; two sisters, Mrs. Everett Hardegen and Miss Nellie Eichhorn, and a brother, Martin Eichhorn, all of Lonaconing. His body was removed to the M. Eichhorn mortuary and prepared for burial. Doolan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Doolan, Sr., also of Lonaconing, and is employed as a truck driver by his father, an agent for the German Brewing company in the George's Creek section. He is married and resides with his wife on Church street. He also is the father of an infant child." This file is located at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/allegany/newspapaers/doolaneichorn.txt
