Home Coming And Centennial July 3, 1937 Lighting facilities for Lonaconing were first installed in 1889, when the Lonaconing Electric and Power Company was organized. After the purchase of a lot on Railrad street a generating plant was erected and shortly after electric service for the town was started. Some years later, the Home Electric company was organized and another generating plant was built. The two companies were in competition for the business of serving the town with electric light and power until 1915 when, owing to the growing demand for electric service and inadequate facilities of both plants, neither organization was able to furnish needed service. The Home Electric Light Company then purchased the equipment and capital stock of the Lonaconing Electric Light and Power Company, erected a sub-station and purchased current from the Edison Electric Illuminating Company, of Cumberland. In 1921, power lines were extended to Barton to furnish light and power to the town of Barton and vacinity. In 1925, the local business men who had owned and operated the electric plant up to that time, sold to New York interests. The Midland Electric Company was purchased by the same group and the two companies were combined. A Chicago Utility Company next acquired possession and later sold to the Empire Company. The Home Electric Light Company at that time became part of the Maryland Light and Power Company and, in 1931, it was sold to the Insull organization. In 1934, the Potomac Edison Company, which owned and operated all of the other electric companies in Allegany County, obtained possession of the property and today is serving the town with electric current and power.
