Brophy, aged 65 years, president of the Piedmont and George's Creek Coal Company, with operations at Westernport and Frostburg, died Monday morning {14 Dec 1931} at his home in Frostburg, following an illness of several days from a heart attack. Mr. Brophy was one of the most prominent coal operators in Maryland, and was recognized as an authority on coal mining. His practice of dividing his time between his office and the mines, gave him a practical knowledge of both the administration and working branches of the mining business. He was held in high esteem both by his employees and by his business associates for his fair dealings. Following employment in the Elk Garden mines as a young man, he took up mining engineering and at the completion of his studies became foreman and mining superintendent for the Union Mining Company at Frostburg. Subsequently, he engaged in extensive coal mining operations at various points in Allegany County, Maryland. The funeral services were held this morning at St. Michael's Church, Frostburg, with interment in the parish cemetery."
