Brown, Sr., at West Virginia University Medical Center in Morgantown Saturday at 5:30 p.m. He was 81 years of age. The senior partner in the law firm of Brown and Brown Law Firm was in his law office on Friday. Later Friday evening, he became ill and by Saturday morning his condition worsened and he was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital. he was transferred at once to West Virginia Medical Center accompanied by his family physician, Dr. Louis H. Nefflin. His illness was described as an acute aneurysm. Entering surgery soon after his arrival at the Medical Center, former Judge Brown failed to survive the operation. The ex-judge had practiced law in Elkins for 55 years, and had been joined in later years by his son, John Brown, Jr., who is city attorney. Brown was appointed judge of the 20th judicial circuit of which Randolph county was a part, by Gov. William G. Conley, on August 1, 1932. He was re-elected for two terms and served until November of 1944. Born April 26, 1883, at Elk Garden, W. Va., former Judge Brown was a son of the late James and Bedelia Brown. His father came to Elkins to work for the Stephen B. Elkins family as a mine superintendent. He spent his boyhood in Elkins and graduated from Davis and Elkins college. His law degree was received from Washington and Lee Law School. He was twice married. His first wife, Alma Lyon, died Feb. 17, 1921. He later married the former Kathryn McHugh, who survives. In addition to his one son, John F. Brown, Jr., he leaves one daughter, Marilyn, wife of Paul Hamelman, of Morgantown. There are seven grandchildren. Judge Brown was the last surviving member of his family of six children. An active member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church, Brown was on the building committee that constructed the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Randolph county bar Assn. and West Virginia State Bar Assn. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1135, and was past state president of the Elks. Friends are being received at the John W. Lohr Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today. The Elks Lodge will conduct ritualistic services from the John W. Lohr Funeral Chapel at 8 p.m. today. Judge Brown will be removed to St. Brendan's Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Tuesday where high mass of requiem will be celebrated. The Rev. Father Charles Doyle will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Brendan's Cemetery. Family members have requested that friends desiring to pay tribute to Attorney Brown send contributions to the Randolph County Heart fund." Unknown newspaper 2 Mar 1965: "Brown Rites Today--High mass of requiem was celebrated this morning at 9 o'clock at St. Brendan's Catholic Church by Rev. Fr. Charles Doyle for former Judge John F. Brown, Sr., 81, who died Saturday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock while undergoing surgery at the West Virginia University Medical Center. Former Judge Brown became ill last Friday nightat his home at 228 Boundary Ave., after being in his office most of the day. He was admitted to the Davis Memorial Hospital Friday morning and transferred at once to the University Medical Center for an operation for acute aneurism. He did not survive the operation. In tribute to the ex-judge, the Randolph County Court House was closed this morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Davis Trust co., one of three Elkins banks, was closed from 9 to 11 a.m. Judge Brown was the attorney and director of that bank. Elkins Lodge No. 1135 B.P.O. Elks, of which Brown was long a member, held memorial services last night a 8 o'clock from the John W. Lohr Funeral Home following the recitation of the rosary. Interment was made in St. Brendan's Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Kathryn McHugh Brown; one son, John F. Brown, Jr., a partner with his father in the law firm of Brown and Brown and one daughter, Marilyn, wife of Paul Hamelman, of Morgantown. There are seven grandchildren."
