Montgomery County authorities blamed the fire on careless smoking. Mrs. Fannon was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital from smoke inhalation and cardiac arrest. Firefighters said they were called to the Fannon home around midnight and met by the woman's husband, Edgar Fannon, 58, a native of Mt. Savage, who had suffered second degree burns over his face, shoulders and upper chest. He told authorities his wife was still inside the house. Firemen were able to carry her from the building but efforts to revive her failed. Investigators said the fire was started by a cigarette. The couple apparently tried to put out flames before calling the fire department, they said. In addition to her husband, also surviving are a son, James Fannon, at home, and a daughter, Mrs. Ann O'Steen, College Park. Friends are being received at the Collins Funeral Home, Silver Spring. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9 a. m. in St. John's Catholic Church, Silver Spring, and interment will be there."
