"Five Men Killed in Auto Accident-Funeral services were held yesterday for 
five young men of the community who were killed early Sunday morning in an 
automobile accident on the McMullen highway, route 220, about ten miles this 
side of Cumberland. Fatally injured in the accident were Timothy Gilmore, 32, 
Westernport, former state trooper, who was driving the car. Charles Lee 
Kalbaugh, 28, Piedmont, and his brother, Earl Glenn, Kalbaugh, Westernport. 
Richard Daniel Moran, 25, Westernport, owner of the car. Richard Allen Michael, 
25, Westernport. Services for Richard Allen Michael were conducted yesterday 
morning at 11 o'clock at the Evangelical United Brethren Church by the Rev. Lee 
Sheaffer, pastor. Joint rites for Charles Lee and Earl Glenn Kalbaugh, were held 
at the Boal funeral home yesterday at 1:30 o'clock with the Rev. George Davison, 
rector of St. James Episcopal church, Westernport, and the Rev. G. Stanley 
Schwind, former rector, now at St. George's church, Mt. Savage. Services for 
Timothy Gilmore were conducted at his residence, 122 Johnson street, Westernport, 
at three o'clock by the Rev. Lee Scheaffer, pastor of the EUB church. Rites for 
Richard D. Moran were held at the home of his mother, Mrs. Sarah Moran, 215 
Hammond street, at 4:30 o'clock with the Rev. Clyde W. Ash, pastor at Trinity 
Methodist Church, officiating. Accord Military Honors-Full military honors were 
accorded for Michael, the Kalbaughs, and Gilmore, by Victory Post 155, American 
Legion, assisted by Barton Post 189 and Kelly-Mansfield Post 52 of Piedmont. 
Potomac Fire Company conducted rites at the graves at Philos cemetery for Charles 
Kalbaugh, Michael, Gilmore and Moran. Members of Potomac Fire Company and 
Tri-Towns Fire Company in uniform attended all five funerals. {Pallbearers for 
all are listed}. Timothy Gilmore-A native of Thomas, Timothy Gilmore was a son of 
Mrs. Grace Shaffer Gilmore, Oakland and the late Timothy M. Gilmore. He spent 
most of his earlier youth in Crellin and and was a graduate of Oakland high 
school. During World War II, he served as a tank driver with the Army in Africa 
and Italy and was wounded in the chest. After the war, he served six years with 
the Maryland State Police, resigning last February to become a guard at the 
Allegany Ballistics lab at Pinto. He was a member of Victory Post, American 
Legion, and Potomac Fire Company. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, 
Mrs. Elizabeth Guy Gilmore, 122 Johnson Street, Westernport; three brothers, 
Harold Gilmore, Webster Springs, W. Va.; John W. Gilmore, Layfayette, Indiana, 
and Glenn Gilmore, Terra Alta and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Kershetaky, Delano, 
Pa., and Mrs. Hazel Parsons, Hambleton, W. Va. Richard D. Moran, son of Mrs. 
Sarah Moran and the late Edward S. Moran, former mayor of Westernport, was a 
native of the town and a graduate of Bruce high school. He was a manager of the 
Moran Trucking Company in which he was associated with his brothers. He was a 
member of Trinity Methodist Church and Potomac Fire company. Besides his mother, 
he leaves four brothers, Charles, James, Harold and Donald, all of Westernport. 
Richard A. Michael, son of Mrs. Annie Virginia Kline Michael and the late Bayard 
Michael, is also a native of Westernport and attended Bruce high school. During 
World War II he served two years aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific 
theatre. A member and sergeant-at-arms of Potomac Fire company, he was employed 
as a steward at the Potomac club. Besides his mother, he leaves four brothers, 
Marshall, Clyde, Thomas and Paul, all of Westernport, and two sisters, Mrs. 
Charles Floto, Cumberland, and Mrs. Oliver Long, Arlington, Va. Police Version of 
Accident-The accideent occurred about 4:52 Sunday morning. The time was 
established by a broken watch on the wrist of Richard Moran. Trooper First Class, 
A. M. Sploch, of the Maryland State Police, who investigated, said that Gilmore, 
driving Moran's 1951 hardtop convertible, had just rounded a bend and apparently 
was confused by the headlights of another vehicle parked along Gilmore's side of 
the road. Apparently thinking the recently relocated road lay to the right of the 
headlights, Gilmore swerved off the road onto a gravel shoulder. By the time he 
realized his mistake, it was too late to stop. The car skidded several hundred 
feet, careened back to the road, and smashed against the front of the parked car. 
Four of the victims were thrown from the car with only Earl Kalbaugh and Richard 
Michael still in the back seat. Sploch said all of the dead except Charles 
Kalbaugh died instantly. Witnesses said Kalbaugh called for help then crawled 
under a fence at the George M. Barton farm and died of internal injuries. Dr. H. 
V. Deming, deputy county medical examiner, said the others died of skull 
fractures, internal injuries and neck fractures. James. F. Thompson, the sixth 
occupant, was thrown from the vehicle and later was moved to Sacred Heart 
hospital, Cumberland, where he is recovering from his injuries. Occupant of 
Parked Car Hurt. Miss Joreetta Proudfoot, 21, of Rowlesburg, the only occupant 
of the parked car, sustained sever lacerations of the face and eyes when her 
head was thrown through the windsheild by the impact. She told police she had 
been drowsy and thought she was dreaming when she saw the other car careening 
wildly towards her. Lewis H. Allwine, 24, of Highland, N. J., operator of the 
parked car, stated that he and his brother, Ernest, had pulled off to the left 
side of the road when they were flagged by Wilbur Fresh, a stranded motorist, of 
Akron, O., who had developed engine trouble. Gilmore's wife, Mrs. Betty Guy 
Gilmore, arrived at the scene of the accident about two hours later, unaware of 
her husband's death. Police said she was anxious over her husband's failure to 
return home and she stopped at the scene as officers were preparing to leave."
