Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, Thursday, May 31, 1928:  
"John Francis Kean, former canal boatman, city policeman and guard at Sylvan 
Retreat, died at 12:30 yesterday morning at his home, 230 Beall street.  He 
was a son of the late Patrick E. and Mary Kean and is survived by two brothers 
and three sisters: George and Patrick Kean, Mrs. Mary O'Neill, Mrs. Catherine 
Thomas and Mrs. Elizabeth Morrisey.  He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic 
Church, from which the funeral will be held at 9 'o'clock tomorrow morning 
with high mass of requiem. Burial will be in the church cemetery."
