Manley Passed Away Last Night-- WAS BORN IN YEAR 1800--She Was Perhaps the Oldest Woman In the State-- Saw Cumberland Grow From a Village Into a Good Sized City--Mrs. Mary E. Manley died last evening at 7 o'clock at the residence of her granddaughter, Mrs. Mary Manley Brown, 18 Orchard Street. Mrs. Manley was in her one hundred and eighth year at the time of her death and was no doubt the oldest woman in the county if not in the state. Her death resulted from a stroke of paralysis sustained Monday. She was a native of County Mayo, Ireland, where she was born July 4, 1800. She came to America eighty-five years ago, first settling in New York and later in Cumberland, traveling the distance to this city in a wagon. There were no railroads then and Mrs. Manley, whose mind was quite clear until within a few days of her death, remembered well the appearance of the first train that entered Cumberland and the excitement that attended it. Her husband helped build the railroad. She also remembered well the recent fire that almost destroyed Cumberland. She remembered Cumberland when it was a small village, and saw it grow into a city. Previous to her marriage she was a Miss Mary Welsh, daughter of Thos. Welsh. She was the mother of three daughters and one son, all of whom are dead except her son, Patrick Manley, who resided recently in Chicago, but whose whereabouts are now unknown. She leaves sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great grandchildren. Her remains will be buried Thursday morning, with services at St. Patrick's Church at 8 o'clock."
