"Evening Times" Cumberland, Maryland, Tuesday 21 Feb 1933: 
"Funeral services for John A. McGowan, aged 83, resident of Lonaconing and Gilmore 
for more than a half century, who died Friday afternoon at his home in Gilmore, and 
not, as previously published, at the Meyers' home, were held in St. Joseph's 
Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Rev. Jos. P. Nolan of Frostburg 
officiated. Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Michael 
Morley, Robert McKenzie, George Kreil, Thomas Moore, John Cosgrove, James Jenkins, 
Sr., John Murphy, Patrick Mills and Patrick Nolan. Mr. McGowan was born at Sandy 
Hook, Md., just across the state line from Harper's Ferry, W.Va., in 1849. He later 
moved to Virginia and during the Civil War, when he was only fourteen years old, he 
served as a Confederate soldier, in Company B-18 of the Virginia Cavalry under 
Captain Stump and Colonel Philip Snar. After the Civil War, he migrated to Western 
Maryland and settled at Rawlings, this county. After his marriage in 1876 to Mary 
Nolan, he purchased the Dan's Mountain farm at Lonaconing. He resided there until 
1911, when he retired and moved to the present residence in Gilmore. Mrs. McGowan 
died in 1928. Mr. McGowan died of a heart attack. He had been in failing health 
from a fractured hip sustained in a fall while walking in his yard last spring. 
Surviving are ten children, William McGowan, Boulder City, Nev.; Mrs. M. J. Spence, 
Johnstown, Pa.; Mrs. Emmett Greenwade, Frostburg; John, Frank, and Joseph McGowan, 
Mrs. John Hughes and Mrs. Hugh MacMillan, Midland, and Mrs. Joseph H. Mills and 
Mrs. Fred J. Meyers, Gilmore. There are also 37 grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren..."
