He had been in failing health the past year. Born in Cumberland, he was a retired Kelly-Springfield Tire Company pipefitter and owner and operator of Mertens Plumbing and Heating Company, Bedford Road. His parents were the late John H. and Mary (Morgan) Mertens. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Emma (Denisor) Mertens; seven sons, Paul L. Mertens, Marietta, Ga.; Robert P., Dr. Boyd E. and John E. Mertens, city; Elmer L. Mertens, Lancaster, Ohio; James L.Mertens, Columbus, Ohio, and Russell L. "Jack" Mertens, at home; daughter, Mrs. Austin Secoy, Lancaster, Ohio; one half brother, Albert H. Morgan Sr., LaVale; a half-sister, Mrs. Stella Whiting, Albuquerque, N. M.; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The body is at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills, LaVale, where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted there tomorrow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Lawrence Frye officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Pallbearers will be Emmett Dougherty, William R. King, Edgar F. Merritt, Ralph E. Ferguson, Frank J. Davis and Charles E. Dick."
