Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, 18 July 1933: 
"Funeral of John H.  Mertens--The body of John H. Mertens, 
son of the late Frederick Mertens, a well known business 
man of this city in former years, arrived here at 12:15 
o'clock by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from Washington, 
where he died Saturday.  The body was taken directly to 
the Rose Hill cemetery, where interment was made in the 
family lot.  Mr. Mertens had been ill since last August. 
The pallbearers were Fred A. Eberly, Washington, D. C.; 
Henry W. Gruber, Frostburg; and Gene Troxel, James M. 
Conway, John A. Cupler and Charles P. Zimmerman.  Henry 
F. Mertens, a brother and Frederick Mertens, Jr., both of 
Washington, accompanied the body here."
