Interment was in the Catholic cemetery, last Sunday. Mr Murphy leaves a widow, he having been married but five months. The immediate cause of death was gangrene, he having had a foot mashed in the C&P yards at Westernport some time ago and notwithstanding the fact the he was taken to the St Joseph Hospital at Baltimore, the result was above stated. The CUMBERLAND TIMES pay the following tribute: The funeral of Mr. William P. Murphy who died at St. Joseph Hospital, Baltimore last Thursday took place last Sunday in Westernport. The burial services were at St. Peter's Catholic church where Rev. Michael Riordan of St. James Church, Pikesville, Md., a cousin of the deceased, was assisted by Rev. Thos. E. Lyons of Westernport. He was a brakeman for two years from Piedmont to Lonaconing, then he was changed from Cumberland to Lonaconing, making his home at Mt. Savage for the past four years. On the 17th day of last July, he married Miss Minnie Murphy, adopted daughter of Mr. Frank McDermitt, a well known C&P engineer, which makes Mr. Murphy's death doubly sad, being a young man only 28 years old and leaving a bride of six months who is heart broken. Mr. Murphy was a man who made many friends among his fellow workmen and also his employers, being very conscientious, upright, and always ready to help a fellowman, but always ready to condemn a cowardly act and by his kind manner and winning ways has made many friends. He was a life-long member of St. Patricks Total Abstinence and Benevolent Society, and A. O. H. Society and Catholic Legion, who all attended, it being the largest funeral seen in Piedmont for years. Besides his widow, he leaves a mother and Miss May and John Murphy of Cumberland, who is one of the oldest engineers on the W. Va. railroad, Jerry, who stays at home with his mother and sister Maggie." This file is located at http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/allegany/obits/m/murphy-w.txt
